Q: Bear Hunt………..?
My friends and i went to look for a bear and found one from 15 yards away jump out of a dumpster so if we want to see one should i go to the place where the dumpster with my 4 other friends and buy some steak and try to find him? Its in the Adirondacks Ny Were doing it next year again and we have a camp they have camps too we dont plan on getting close but on the last day at 2 am about 2 weeks ago our friend the volenteer firefighter fed the bear marshmellows she was in the lean to she had a chairbarricade and tossed the bear marshmellows from 10 feet away! What should i do go down with her her daughter a friend of ours and another friend or instead of the lean to the dumpster at the restaurant

A: Leave the bear alone!
If you feed the bear or bother it, one of you will end up hurt or dead.
A bear that gets used to people eventually ends up being a pest and will have to be moved or killed.
And it may attack you (or some little kid) when it thinks you may have food.
Please leave it alone.

A: This would be a question for your local wildlife management agencies. They would be able to give you accurate data concerning the populations and information concerning how many of these animals the habitat could support. They could also get you started on track to get something passed so you could have a season.

When I was young, my Uncles used to clap their lap and hands and said a poem that started “Going on a Bear Hunt …” We went over hills and around lakes to a cave where we felt the bears nose and took off running the other way. A: Polar bears feed mainly on Eskimos and bearded Eskimos. Depending upon their location, they also eat juvenile Eskimos and hooded Eskimos and scavenge on carcasses of Eskimos. When Eskimos are unavailable, polar bears eat Eskimo berries, and Eskimo garbage. A polar bear’s stomach can hold an estimated 15% to 20% of its body weight meaning it can eat an entire Eskimo. It can assimilate 84% of the protein and 97% of the fat it eats. Polar bears need an average of 4.4 lb. of fat per day to survive, so your average obese Eskimo will suffice. A Eskimo weighing 121 lb. could provide up to eight days of energy for a polar bear.

Still Hunting:

The polar bear remains motionless beside a front entrance to an igloo waiting for a Eskimo to exit. When a Eskimo exits, the polar bear bites onto the head or upper body, then flips the entire Eskimo onto the ice.

Stalking on Land:

Once spotted, the Eskimo is slowly and steadily stalked by the polar bear. At 15 to 30 m away, the polar bear suddenly charges the Eskimo, with its claws or teeth, the polar bear grabs the Eskimo before the Eskimo can enter his igloo.

A: I dont know where you are in eastern Wa. but accross stevens pass is a place called Tonga ridge thats loaded with blue berries then as well as black bear(big one’s)

A: my bf and i usually go huntin near the alaska penninsula during mid-august wen more bears begin to migrate off of the salmon streams and r searchin 4 berries and ground squirrels the tag costs $500 and id say the average cost 4 grizzly huntin would b from $8055-$15500+ but prices vary dependin on where ull b huntin and as 4 the gun a .375 magnum is recommended but if u r a better shot and r more experienced with a .300mag then its best 2 go with that.

Q: Where is the best place to hunt black bear?
This will be my first time hunting ever and i want to get the biggest black bear i can find in North America. Where would you suggest I go?

A: Minnesota. We have over 30,000 black bears packed primarily into the northern portion of the state.

No offense to any other state, but Northern Minnesota has a population density that I doubt any other state can match.

So your chances will be great, but size wise most are average. Still, I have seen -many- large specimens with my own eyes.

The largest Minnesota bear that has been weighed was 876 pounds, but this was live weight.

Q: First Black bear hunt in montana?

A: Dont listen to these baiters, they are not real hunters. Baiting and waiting is for people who do not have the skills to find and stalk game.

It is admirable that Montana only allows spot and stalk tactics.

Basically you should talk with locals. If you know the current food source you wont have much of a problem finding them and stalking them ; )

Q: How many ft-lbs of energy would you like to have when hunting black bear?
I have a 308 Win that I can nearly drive tacks with (1″ groups at 200 yds consistently) but I am concerned about the terminal ballistics while hunting bear. The bears in my area aren’t too big, 200-300 lbs maybe and I’m wondering what my maximum ethical range should be. Also I dont want to wound a bear and follow it into the brush, not my idea of fun.

A: I am a long time Alaskan hunter, trapper, and military competition shooter.

1″ groups at 200 yards is not tack driving. Shooting at the target, pasting over the hole, and shooting into the same hole again and again all afteroon long – and not having a hole much larger than the first – that is tack driving. 1″ groups at 500 yards is tack driving.

Black bears are no where near as tough as brown. The 308 is probably the absolutly best round to use on black bear from close in to 400+ yards. Black bears do not have a large sectional density – so – any rifle with more power than a 308 is simply just going to pass through the animal and be no help at all………. except to maybe wound a second animal behind the first and make more noise.

Rule of thumb with bear hunting – you keep shooting until the bear stops moving – this rule will prevent you from having to track a wounded bear. Shot placement is only critical when the bear is in a heavy covered brush area and getting only one good shot off is possible……. ideally you want to fire whent the bear has strayed into an area where you can get several shot off at it before it can reach cover.

Generally, if you see a bear today – you can show up earlier and catch it again tomorrow. Keep this in mind – because some bears will look great up front – and their butt or side can be so badly rubbed the hide is worthless and beyond what a skilled taxidermist can fix.

My bear hunting buddy and I were glassing a huge grizzly in Sitka one morning. It was a nice big bear, big head, nice fur on the sides……. and then it turned around and whole butt was totally hairless! It looked like the bear had pulled down it’s pants and was mooning us – just two big bald cheeks and a butt crack a plumber would be proud to own. I couldn’t help myself – I started laughing….I could barely keep it in, my buddy was holding my head to keep the snickers from leaking out….. and the bear heard me and started looking our way. Laughing almost got us killed.

It pays to spend the extra time glassing a bear before you shoot it. But, try to keep out of laughing distance. Bears do funny things.

Your standard 150gr soft point bullet will work fine. Winchester ‘Black Talons’ or any handload using a Barnes X bullet will work best. You want to break bones and damage vital organs – bullets like these – and Nosler Partitions – retain their original weight and do a better job when performing a quartering shot.

Black bear meat is totally awesome! Wondeful pot roasts, steaks and chops – and sausage to die for. Any sausage recipie that calls for pork you can use black bear, just add extra tallow to make up for the bear meat being lean. If you get one – email me – I have some award winning sausage recipies.

That, and black bear tallow and fat makes excellent high quality soap. If you have the fat turned into soap – I can guarantee you, your wife will be all over you asking when you are going to go hunting again.

A: Been bear hunting my whole life they are my favorite hunt. Hounds and bait work best otherwise glass south facing slopes early in the morning they look like burnt stumps at first so look close. Be carefull not to shoot a sow with cubs even if it is leagle (probably not) it is immoral. Don’t rush your shot bears have poor vision but good noses so wait and harvest humanly. Good luck and the thing you should be most carefull of is becoming addicted and going back year after year. They are very good table fare as well. Salami pepperoni and sausage are best however the backstrap of a well fed baited bear is very nice also…..Now I have to defrost some sausage 4 breakfast tomorow.

Q: what is a good rifle for hunting black bear?
what caliber and rifle are best for hunting black bear and grizzly bear?

A: I have taken both species in Canada and British Columbia. I used a 7mm Remington Magnum and a 300 Winchester Magnum and they both took care of business. If I had to recommend anything else, I would suggest something in 30-06 minimum or larger, preferably a magnum.

Q: I’ll be hunting black bear with a 308win, and most likely not taking a shot beyond 75 yards?
what bullet or factory ammo would you recommend?

A: A 165 gr bullet should do the job, but personally, given the short distances involved with most black bear hunting, I’d opt for the 180 gr. The reason is that black bear can get pretty big. If you get your sights on a trophy of a lifetime, the larger bullet should give you better penetration and carry more energy with it.

For factory ammo, Federal Premium makes some great hunting loads. They make some 180 gr. rounds loaded with Nosler Partition bullets or the Barnes MRX.

Another good bullet is the plain old Remington Core-Lokt ammo (the plain Remington Green box). The Core-Lokt bullets do hold together quite well and I have had good luck with them.

Personally, I think the best compromise between quality and price is the Federal Fusion ammo. They are good quality bonded bullets, but they are still pretty cheap (about the same price as the Remington Green Box). If cost is an issue, I would go with these.

A: I personally use a remington model seven rifle in .243 caliber. I like the accuracy and low recoil.

Q: Black Bear Hunting Tomorrow!!?
My Father, My Brother, My Dads best friend and My best Friend are heading up north to do a bear hunt. Me and my best friend, its our first time and i was wondering what you were thinking on the choices we picked for rifles. He picked a Remington Model 700 CDL SF limited edition topped with a 3-9×40 mm bushnell elite 3200 in a 30-06 shooting 180 grain silver tips (not ballistic silver tips, just silver tips) and i picked a remington model 700 BDL topped with a 3.5-12x, 42mm Nikon monarch in a 7mm rem mag shooting 160 grain accubond CT.

I expect to get one because last week a bunch of americans went up to hunt black bear and they got 15 black bears as big as 400 lbs-450 lbs. Now that sounds unreal, dont get me wrong i didn’t believe it at first but its true. Thats one hell of a big hunting party and thats one hell of a turn out. Hopefully my little hunting party can bring home a couple decent bears.

A: True that most Northern Black bears top out at 450 lb, but back in the boonies, some get twice that large. The 30-06 180 grainers at full power and good hits at reasonable range should be fine even on the big ones. The 160 grain 7mm Maggies are a great 700 yard deer or 500 yard elk round (assuming you can hit at that distance), but the “Northern backwoods triple-sized” Black bears are not on the menu. However, the regular 450 lb ones are.

Do be aware that recently Grizzlies have made a comeback in some Northern areas, and 200 grain bullets are absolutely necessary on the bigger ones, with that thick gristle plate on them and that thick skull.

Q: How dangerous is Black Bear hunting? ?
I recently took the NY state hunter education course as a refresher and the instructors described black bear hunting as dangerous, to the extent that I always thought grizzly bear hunting would be. For example they said that other bears can come in after a shot is fired and these bears will potentially stalk hunters that shot at them if they are not killed. Is hunting black bear often a dangerous experience? I know that all bears deserve respect but have any of you encountered dangerous black bears afield? I have little field experience but would like to hunt these animals with the appropriate caliber rifle and cartridge as well as plenty of “range practice” is it a bad choice of game animal to start with?

A: I am glad I did not take a hunter ed course in NY. It sounds as though you were fed a lot of misinformation.
You have to respect an animal that can turn you into it’s dinner. But, they are not going to stalk you just because they were shot at.
You should use a rifle caliber as large as you can shoot accurately. Shot placement is more important than rifle caliber. Anything .270 and larger, with a well-placed and accurate shot, will kill a black bear. They have been taken with smaller calibers, but I would not recommend it.
If you do shoot a bear, wait a short time before you approach. Watch to see if it is breathing. Approach from behind before checking it physically. This will give you an advantage if it does get back up. If its eyes are closed, it IS NOT dead. Animals do not die with their eyes closed. I have always been of the mindset that another round into the vitals never hurts. Good luck and be safe.

Q: What is the best factory loaded bullet for 7mm rem mag deer/bear hunting?
The 150gr. Federal using Sierra Game King looks good, but what is a bullet that will not come apart at velocities of +3100fps? I heard Remington’s core lokts have that problem

A: I’d be very happy with loads using any of these:
Barnes TSX from 140-160gr or 150gr Tipped TSX(not sure if these are in factory loads yet)
Nosler Partition 150-175gr or E-Tip 150gr
Winchester XP3 160gr
Trophy Bonded Bearclaw or TB Tip. 160-175gr
Hornady’s Gilding Metal Expanding(GMX) would be alright in 139gr but it they have a 150gr or heavier one yet I’d pick it

The Federal Premium Vital-Shok line has most of these.
Winchester Supreme has the E-Tip and XP3

Just my opinion but I don’t much like light to medium weight plain cup & core bullets in the small and/or fast magnums. For any game animal larger or tougher then deer at least the HEAVY conventional bullets or good premium designs are a better choice.

Q: Bear Hunting Holiday Help?
what do you or the hunting place do after youve killed a big game like a bear or something big, like how do you get it out of the woods, and do you have to eat it all, beause out of all the game killed you cant eat it all, and do you take any of it home

A: ohhh boy this is where the real work begins.
you drag them out, yes i said drag. after the downed bear is found you field dress it. then you drag it out to the neaarest road or trail and hopfully set it in to your atv and drive it back to camp, where its butchered and eaten- bear will taste just fine you might like it more than beaf who knows ; )

Q: Which gun would be best for hunting a big game animal like a bear?

A: I would go with a remington 700 in .300 WSM it has a flat trajectory and a high velocity. And it has the knock down capabilities to handle grizzly if you hit vitals.

Q: What are the best hunting dogs(more info than yesterday)?
Ok, I am in the lower peninsula of Michigan, and I would be hunting big game(deer, bear) and MAYBE some birds.I would like a dog to be great at hunting but also a very nice dog(to me). Which is the best hunting dog for me and the terrain im on.

A: Well you’re trying to get double and triple duty out of a single dog. Most are trained to do one thing and do it very well. When I used to use dogs on deer, when it was still legal in my state that is, I had several Weimerainer’s. They were quite good at circling deer and hogs. I wouldn’t know about bear. I found them to be very good with people, and focused on the hunt. As another reader said, they aren’t really bred to retrieve but will with a lot of work.

For retrieving, I have used Brittany Spaniels and Labs. The Britts were a little rambunctious and if not worked every day they tended to get a little rowdy.They also were very one person types as were the Weimers. The labs are what I settled on and I still train and raise them. Talk about a family dog, they will walk right up to a toddler and lick them in the face and if the kiddo falls they’ll pick him right back up. They are very bright and depending on what you get they can have quite a lot of character. I had a chocolate that would sneak birds away from my buddies and bring em to me when they weren’t looking. He was something. Everyone loved him, but learned to count their birds when he came around.

Q: Pitbull Fighting vs. Bear Hunting?
I’m asking this question on behalf of someone else.

In terms of killing animals unjustly, why is pitbull fighting illegal, and the killing of wild game such as bears legal? Why is turkey hunting legal, but bird fighting illegal?

A: Hunting animals by humans in the wild during sanctioned hunts (ie: not poaching) serves a decent purpose, it helps keep population levels in a range that allows them to be healthy. Over population can cause sickness, starvation and depletion of natural resources. In other words too much of a good thing can be just as bad as too little.
Animals in the wild have their wits about them and can evade hunting and even if spotted have a decent chance at getting away. While they may not ask to be hunted, they generally are not kept in a corral for you to shoot at whenever you want. (The exception to this are hunt farms- those I think should be outlawed!)
Pitbulls are bred to fight. They are given no opportunity to escape from the people fighting them. They are subjected to horrific training practices such as bite training where their jaws lock on a target attached to a spring and hung from a rafter in a garage, provoked into attacking weaker dogs and sometimes puppies, being starved, beaten -I could go on..but you get the idea.
There really is no comparison between hunting and pit fighting. I hope this helps.

A: Each person has his or her own idea of the ultimate bow. Just use one that suits you, has enough draw weight to do the job, and you can shoot accurately. And be sure you have an adequate broadhead for bear on the end of the arrow.

Q: is there any hunting games out for the 360 that plays like tho old games did?
what i mean is i want a good hunting game like the ones for the ps2 where you picked you equipment and stuff then it put you in front of a lodge and said hunt it didnt say ok their is a dear right in front of you shoot it and it will open a cutscene where a bear will attack you and other gay crap. the first dangerous hunts was like this and i loved it but i cant find any for the 360 the new big game hunter is arcadey and tells you where to go all the time

Q: What brand of bolt action rifle is the best for hunting and what is the best for military?
Hunting large game like, deer, elk, buffalo, bear. Sako? watherby? Remington? Browning? Winchester? Ruger? Kimber? ect……

A: You dident list anything that wont work just your choice on slight difereces in function, looks (admit it guys it matters) fit, weight and any other criteria you chose oh, also pocket book. caliber is your choice in any of them. just pick a caliber that will ethicaly kill what you are hunting. militay the m24 (m700 rem) is an exelent gp rifle for snipers. in my day we carried m21 (accurised m14) it was not quite as accuate as the m24 but has its stringths. no mater what one guy chooses some other guy says his is better and can prove it with facts. but what matters most is the shooter. the snipers of ww11 used rifles that would hardly be considerd “snipers rifles” today but noone can say they werent effective. there is no such thing as a sniper rifle, there are snipers and the equipment they use.

i think im leaning towards the marlin because ive had a lot of good experience with them, but id still like the input. also what size round would you reccomend, 30-06, 308, or 7mm-08 i plan on hunting the larger game like bear, elk, caribou, moose, and buffalo.

A: Of these I would go with the marlin in 308. Less recoil so it is easier to shoot accurately. I agree with the guy who says to look at a savage, very accurate out of the box. Remember accuracy is what really counts, a miss with any caliber is a wasted shot.

I was just wondering if it is possible to train a hunting dog to point/flush and retrieve birds such as waterfowl and upland birds and also train them to hunt big game possessing two skills in one dog? I am trying to get two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, but would like them to hunt birds and bay big game such as deer and bears. A: Dogs usually cannot be trained to do both because once he comes across another scent like a deer while bird hunting he will run off on that trail….unless he is like a blood hound trained to chase one scent.

Get yourself 2-3 dogs……because deer hunting is about being quiet unless you use the dog to drive the deer like mine. My black lab is amazing…..he is a great water dog for ducks and he loves to chase deer and anything else you let him scent sniff. I let a buddy hold him until I get in position at the clearing south of a about 100acres of woods and then we let him lose on the North side and he tracks all deer in the woods and flushes them out to the clearing were I take them down. He also will flush quail,dove and retrieve them cause he has a super nose.
I could never find a bird in the tall grass or wheat without him……..He is just so damn smart. When I get my gun he gets excited and goes and gets my boots……..

Q: Why is it legal to “hunt” captive animals, while bear baiting and rooster fighting are illegal?
First of all, let’s clarify my position: I support traditional hunting and fishing, and champion the concept of sportsmanship and stewardship of natural resources. I enjoy eating meat, and appreciate ecology and the natural beauty of fauna. Traditional hunting has many beneficial aspects.

Private hunting reserves – game ranches – deer farms: these are commercial sites where “hunters” pay to kill captive animals. Presumably the outcome is guaranteed by the proprietors.

A fighting cock has a chance to survive. A captive bear has a chance to kill one of its attackers. These barbaric “sports” have been outlawed for centuries in most places.

What could be the motive to “hunt” captive animals, other than the joy of seeing something die? Do you think of someone as more manly who kills captive animals on hunting ranches? Am I missing some redeeming aspect of this activity?

Maybe by releasing their agression on an animal, they avoid doing so on a fellow human? Or does it stimulate it?

You discussed the increasing efficiency of hunting techniques. I wonder how much something is a “sport” when the outcome is guaranteed.

Why is it fun to shoot an animal under controlled conditions but not at a slaughterhouse? How close do the two facilities need to become before we cross the line?

Have you heard about the internet game preserves, where you can kill an animal from the internet, via robotically controlled rifle? Has that crossed the line?

A: As space open to the public for hunting shrinks this will most likely become a bigger issue. The vast majority of pheasant hunted in America today are domestically reared. There are almost no wild pheasant left. Are these pheasant treated any less humanely than the millions of chickens consumed by Americans every year? I don’t think so. At least the pheasants enjoy a little freedom.

Also stocking trout is common everywhere—isn’t this a form of hunting?

Today there are more ducks than ever in history because “Ducks Unlimited” a private hunting club, has purchased important properties to protect the wild ducks’ flyways. Are they wrong to then hunt some of these ducks—I don’t think so.

I am not sure about hunting larger domestic/wild game. I suppose it depends on how they are treated and if they are humanely hunted in a relative free environment. If it’s shooting fish in a barrel I am against it.

As for Rooster fighting, bear baiting, dog fighting and such, I am against them because the animals are generally kept in awful conditions and the animals are allowed to maul each other and suffer great pain just for the thrill of it. It brings out the worst in man and beast. Hunting on the other hand is as old as man.

PS. I would tend to agree with you that a guaranteed outcome would indicate that the animal was not given enough free range. I am against any kind of caged hunting and I guess that might include small ranches with game-fences.

A: Don’t listen to anyone who says a .357 is a good choice for grizzly bear. It is Highly debated whether the .44 mag is enough for Grizzly defense,let alone Grizzly hunting. Without going to a shotgun with slugs or a rifle, you should go bigger than the .44, people love the SW .500. I have a .44 mag and find that I enjoy shooting it more than my 9 mm and .45 ACP. Felt recoil is more about how the gun fits you than the power of the cartridge.

I’ve been reading a little and I’ve seen articles about these animals. The suggested calibers ranged between the .243 Win and the .338 Win Mag, but which one is the best for taking all of them down, without ruining the meat of a whitetail and ensuring the death of grizzly with one shot?
If you disagree there is one caliber for taking all of them down for sure without ruinign the deer’s meat, suggest two calibers.

A: If you are new to hunting/shooting sports a .338 Winchester Magnum is going to be a bit much. Deer to grizzly bears is a wide range. Deer are easy to kill, where as grizzly bears are not. As others have suggested, I would look towards a medium bore cartridge. You could get something along the lines of a .338-06 A Square, 35 Whelen, 9.3×62, .338 Winchester Mag, .340 Weatherby, 9.3×64 Brenneke, .375 H&H(or Ruger) or any number of wildcats. These would all prove effective against grizzly bears. I have a few in this range that and have had quite a few others. Currently, I have a 9.3×62 built on a FN Mauser action that is the superb. 286gr Nosler partitions at 2400fps is good medicine for anything in NA. I’ve also got an 8mm-06 Ackley Improved built on a German Mauser and a 8mm-338 Improved on a Whitworth Mauser. I’ve had .358 Norma, .340 WBY, .375 Taylor, .35-348 Improved, among others.

A: Well all the bear hunters I know here in Alaska use one of these rifles; .300 mag, .338 win mag, 7mm mag, .375 H&H mag although there are some others those are the most often used.
No matter the rifle we all use heavy bullets designed to stay together for deep penetration through bone, heavy muscles and think hide.
I use the .338 Winchester magnum.

There are people who shoot them with bows and black powder rifles although that’s not as common as magnum rifles.

There are rumors that some have killed grizzlies by just showing them a picture of Nancy Pelosi nude.

A: GlacierWolf is right on about there being sooooo many variables. But one thing is for sure!! The heavy bullet is KING!! I have been in Alaska for 40 years and there are countless numbers of opinions on hunting. All those generations of big and dangerous game hunters are not wrong.

I was guiding a guy from Texas and he had his trusty 300 Weatherby with 180gr. Barnes X. I tried to mention that he needed heavier rounds but he insisted that his world class Weatherby was enough!! He shot a grizzly 5 times. 4 were very accurate kill zone shots, but he charged us and the guy was out of ammo. I fired a single round from a 450 Marlin using a 405 grain solid bullet maxed out @ 2200fps and over 4000 ft lb. The big guy wadded up on his face in two steps. When field dressed the wounds from the 300 were ok but looked shallow. The 450 entered the neck and exited the opposite HIND quarter.

There are lots and lots of great ammo. Get some 200s for your elk or whatever you think is good for you. But please keep the 220s loaded in the rifle until you see something you want to hunt. You will have plenty of time to slip in your favorite round.

My wife carries the 338 and I like my 358 Norma. Perfect for all things in NA and easy to shoot. Accurate past 400yards and does not make a big mess of valuable meat.

A: Your guide will tell you if you are lucky enough that your guide gets tags. I can tell you have not done much research. Non-residents cannot hunt brownies in Alaska unless you are with a guide and use his tags. Expect 10k to 20k to hunt there. Its a supply and demand market and fees are high.

BTW I doubt a 14yr old can go there alone and hire a Guide for 10-20k.

A: The only place in the U.S. where you can find Brown Bears is in Alaska. They are a large cousin of the Grizzly(some say they are just Grizzlies that due to their diet of salmon are just larger). Yes it is legal to hunt them there, I believe if you are a non resident, you need to hire a licensed guide and carry either at least a .44 mag, 12 gauge slug gun or large cal hunting rifle.

A: It is so sad that people feel the need to kill for no reason. I too saw the segment and was shocked that anyone would want to kill such a beautiful animal. They should be left alone to live as they are without fear of being shot on by some moron with a gun who thinks “yeah this will look good on the wall”. I only wish that the bears could have guns to shoot back, unrealistic I know, but wouldn’t that teach the hunters.
