Q: Where is a rural area to hunt black bear in Virginia ?
I am looking for a place to hunt black bear in Virginia that is on land I can use without paying a large fee and not near any significant human population.
A: Contact the Virginia State Park Commission. Its free to hunt on state land where they allow it.
Q: Where is the best place to hunt black bear?
This will be my first time hunting ever and i want to get the biggest black bear i can find in North America. Where would you suggest I go?
A: Minnesota. We have over 30,000 black bears packed primarily into the northern portion of the state.
No offense to any other state, but Northern Minnesota has a population density that I doubt any other state can match.
So your chances will be great, but size wise most are average. Still, I have seen -many- large specimens with my own eyes.
The largest Minnesota bear that has been weighed was 876 pounds, but this was live weight.
Q: First Black bear hunt in montana?
Anyone ever hunt black bear? What tactics should I use, caliber of rifle etc. Only spot and stalk is allowed in montana. Any tips, hints etc. would be greatly appreciated!
A: Dont listen to these baiters, they are not real hunters. Baiting and waiting is for people who do not have the skills to find and stalk game.
It is admirable that Montana only allows spot and stalk tactics.
Basically you should talk with locals. If you know the current food source you wont have much of a problem finding them and stalking them ; )
Q: Why would one hunt black bear?
I saw a question here earlier about which rifle to use to hunt black bear.
Why would you want to hunt bear? Is it good eating? Are there too many around and they need to be thinned out?
I don’t hunt, but I’m not anti-hunting.
This question is simply to find out why one would hunt a bear.
A: Bear is ‘good eating’.
As to hunting them, while I wouldn’t want to see them disappear,
and kinda like to watch them in the wild, I do so very warily.
They have a ceratin visual appeal, but it would be unwise to consider them ‘cuddley critters’.
The bear is classified as a solitary, territorial, opportunistic, omnivore.
That means anything they see that moves is either food, or competition
for resources, and that they are anti-social and ‘untameable’.
They are large enough to easily harm a human and have been known to do so.
They have learned to fear man, but you still don’t want one too close to you.
When they start coming out of the woods into back yards etc.
they represent a hazard.
Population control is in order.

Q: What is the smallest caliber you could hunt black bear with?
gf needs something with little to no kick… thanks
A: Joe,
You need to apply a little country boy logic here. You don’t say where you’re hunting, but Black Bears can get really big. They do tend to be a little lighter down south (Average around 350 lbs.), but up north around PA they have them in the 700 pound range. Now that is small Grizzly weight. The last couple of years they have killed bears over 500 pounds in NW Arkansas. So you do the math and prepare for the worst scenario. Don’t go out with anything less than a .270 with heavy bullets. You can buy her a shooting jacket with padded shoulder and put a super pad on the stock, but don’t put her at risk just to save a little recoil. You might also consider a semi-auto, as they kick a little less because some the recoil energy is used making the action function. Enjoy.
Q: I am looking to start Bow Hunting for Black Bear and deer, any suggestions of a good bow?
Looking to buy a new bow for Black bear hunting and deer hunting, any suggestions would be great.
Thanks, Matt
A: Ninja Bow
Q: What kind of dogs are used to hunt black bear? Would a beagle be used?
A: I’ve had some experience hunting Black Bears with Dogs in several states here on the east coast and out west. I’m pretty familiar with the breeds but would hardly consider myself an expert on the subject. I will share what I know…….Beagles can and have been used to track and chase Bears, but because of their size limitations and short legs, they seem to burn out in a short period of time.Hounds on the other hand are full of energy and built almost perfect for Bear hunting. The most popular breeds according to the Outfitters I’ve hunted with are English “Redtick” Coon Hounds, Black & Tan Coon Hounds,”Bluetick” Coon Hounds, Treeing Walker Hounds and “Plott” Hounds. I’m sure there are more but these are the ones I remember…The breeds I listed are American Breeds except the “Plott Hounds” with were brought over from Germany at the turn of the century. Plott’s were used over there (Germany) for hunting Wild Boar. These Hound breeds are the main ones used for big game, Bear and Mountain Lions, because of their stamina, speed, scenting/tracking abilities and are good swimmers. They all have their own distinctive howls and even though I have been clueless, the Outfitters I’ve hunted with, can even tell which dog is which from it’s “voice”. Pretty cool to get a chance to witness them in action.Hope this at least answers parts of your question…..
Q: What is the best round for black bear, thats not hard on the shoulder?
Me and my son are going on a black bear hunt in AZ. What is the best round to shoot it with I was just going to get him a new rifle. He is like 5′7 and weighs like 155. He is also 13 but he has shot only shotguns (12 gauge with bird shot). What is a good round for him. What about a 300 wsm or the 7mm mag
A: I bought my first 30-06 when I was 14 and haven’t been without one since,so that would be my cartridge of choice. It is well supported by every ammo loader and you can get anything from Reduced Recoil 110 grains that my 12 year can shoot to 220 grain that would take about anything down,at least in most of North America. I use 165 grain Bonded core bullets for deer and elk, could use 180 grain bullets;which I do recommend for the bear hunting. A controlled expansion or bonded bullet will provide proper expansion and weight retention when you need it most. Most important is making sure your son isn’t getting his shoulder bombed and becoming recoil shy,so start out with 150 factory ammo and work up. Then you want to study bear (and other animals you plan to hunt) anatomy to make sure you can hit the vital areas to take out the heart and lungs with a good shot–and teaching when not to shoot.
The 7mm Mag has similar recoil to the 30-06,but the 300 WSM would be too much recoil for a 13 year old. I have a 300 WSM and switching back to the 06 after shooting that is pure joy.He sounds pretty solid, but even I wince at the thought of getting a lot of time behind the 300,and he needs to be comfortable with the rifle to shoot well. So, I would get a 30-06 and then he would have a rifle to use forever. I hunt in Idaho and get shots from close to 400 yards to 30 feet and the 30-06 has never left me disappointed.
Q: Looking to hunt black bear?
I need some info on states allowing non resident bear hunting. and any expeirences or knowledge you may pass on.
A: I go to minnesota. Every year I have applied for a permit I recieved one. the License is 250, a guide (bear baiter) is about 500 and week in a hotel is another 250. Very reasonable hunt, beautiful country and good people. Success rate is about 80%. I can post pictures of my bear as well.
