Q: Bear Hunt………..?
My friends and i went to look for a bear and found one from 15 yards away jump out of a dumpster so if we want to see one should i go to the place where the dumpster with my 4 other friends and buy some steak and try to find him? Its in the Adirondacks Ny Were doing it next year again and we have a camp they have camps too we dont plan on getting close but on the last day at 2 am about 2 weeks ago our friend the volenteer firefighter fed the bear marshmellows she was in the lean to she had a chairbarricade and tossed the bear marshmellows from 10 feet away! What should i do go down with her her daughter a friend of ours and another friend or instead of the lean to the dumpster at the restaurant

A: Leave the bear alone!
If you feed the bear or bother it, one of you will end up hurt or dead.
A bear that gets used to people eventually ends up being a pest and will have to be moved or killed.
And it may attack you (or some little kid) when it thinks you may have food.
Please leave it alone.

Q: Has anyone been on a manitoba bear hunt?
I am going on a ken ganglers bear hunt and i wanna know how any one elses results were?

A: once it was nice

Q: Do you think New Jersey should have a bear hunt?
NJ Governor Corzine has repeatedly turned down the New Jersey Bear Hunt, meanwhile rural counties in NJ suffer as hundreds of bears are simply relocated there and the people there have to go through ridiculous preventative measures (bear-proof garbage cans, etc.). What do you think should happen?

A: This would be a question for your local wildlife management agencies. They would be able to give you accurate data concerning the populations and information concerning how many of these animals the habitat could support. They could also get you started on track to get something passed so you could have a season.

Q: What are the words to “Going on a Bear Hunt”?
When I was young, my Uncles used to clap their lap and hands and said a poem that started “Going on a Bear Hunt …” We went over hills and around lakes to a cave where we felt the bears nose and took off running the other way. The clapping kept pace with the speed of the hunt. I tried to do it with some children and couldn’t remember it all. They still had fun!
PERFECT! Thank you!

A: I think there are a lot of different versions, but I found a link to one:

http://www.timmyabell.com/music/lyrics/ol/bearhunt.htm

Q: What animal does the polar bear primarily hunt for food?
I want to know what the polar bear primarily hunt for?
Is it honeybees, seal, blue whales or tigers

A: Polar bears feed mainly on Eskimos and bearded Eskimos. Depending upon their location, they also eat juvenile Eskimos and hooded Eskimos and scavenge on carcasses of Eskimos. When Eskimos are unavailable, polar bears eat Eskimo berries, and Eskimo garbage. A polar bear’s stomach can hold an estimated 15% to 20% of its body weight meaning it can eat an entire Eskimo. It can assimilate 84% of the protein and 97% of the fat it eats. Polar bears need an average of 4.4 lb. of fat per day to survive, so your average obese Eskimo will suffice. A Eskimo weighing 121 lb. could provide up to eight days of energy for a polar bear.

Hunting Methods

Still Hunting:

The polar bear remains motionless beside a front entrance to an igloo waiting for a Eskimo to exit. When a Eskimo exits, the polar bear bites onto the head or upper body, then flips the entire Eskimo onto the ice.

Stalking on Land:

Once spotted, the Eskimo is slowly and steadily stalked by the polar bear. At 15 to 30 m away, the polar bear suddenly charges the Eskimo, with its claws or teeth, the polar bear grabs the Eskimo before the Eskimo can enter his igloo.

Interesting Polar Bear Facts

1. Polar bears are very sarcastic.
2. In 1931 Hollywood was scandalised by Fatty Arbuckle’s affair with Fru Fru, a (married) polar bear. Neither Arbuckle nor FruFru’s career (she was an ice-dancer) survived the media backlash.
3. Many people assume that polar bears are mammals. They are in fact a form of wingless bird.
4. Just as jews are often blamed for catastrophic events in the global community, so polar bears are often blamed for disaster in the arctic community. Because of this, many polar bears refer to themselves as jewbears.
5. Famous musical polar bears include Jimi Hendrix, Larry Adler, Cyndi Lauper, and Jeff Beck.
6. In 1914 the polar bear population of London was 12. It is now 15.
7. Polar bears have the most natural rhythm of all the arctic animals. During spring and summer, polar bears often give salsa and merengue classes to students in North London.
8. If you are very sad and very lonely, and you think hard enough about a polar bear, one will appear beside you.

Hopefully everyone has learned a little about our friend the Polar Bear today.

Q: which outfitter did Fred Eichler choose for his Alaskan Brown bear hunt?
I’m looking for the outfitter Fred Eichler chose for his Alaskan Brown bear hunt. Thanks!

A: I would contact Eastern Technical Prod, Fred Eichlers YouTube Channel.

Q: Where are some good berry patches in WA to hunt black bear?
I’ll be hunting bear this fall for the first time, and I would like a general area to start scouting around the East Cascade area. Please help me out? If you’ve seen a black bear up in the mountains/eastern WA that’ll help me too.

A: I dont know where you are in eastern Wa. but accross stevens pass is a place called Tonga ridge thats loaded with blue berries then as well as black bear(big one’s)
or at tunnel creek above there are lotsa bear some grizz
or on your side, across from the smith road follow the dirt road to the top….lots a bears and berries!

Q: what is the cheapest way to fly to Alaska and hunt a grizzly bear ?
where is the best place in Alaska to go hunting grizzly bear, how much money would i have to spend on the tag, plane ticket and guide and what kind of gun should i use? it has always been a dream of mine to hunt a grizzly so please, if you can help me i would be very thankful.

A: my bf and i usually go huntin near the alaska penninsula during mid-august wen more bears begin to migrate off of the salmon streams and r searchin 4 berries and ground squirrels the tag costs $500 and id say the average cost 4 grizzly huntin would b from $8055-$15500+ but prices vary dependin on where ull b huntin and as 4 the gun a .375 magnum is recommended but if u r a better shot and r more experienced with a .300mag then its best 2 go with that.
good luck and have fun grizzly huntin its an awesome adrenaline rushing and very rewarding experience

Q: Where is a rural area to hunt black bear in Virginia ?
I am looking for a place to hunt black bear in Virginia that is on land I can use without paying a large fee and not near any significant human population.

A: Contact the Virginia State Park Commission. Its free to hunt on state land where they allow it.

Q: Is it legal to hunt bear and cougar with hounds in Colorado?
Me and my dad want to get some hounds, but we want to make sure we can hunt that kind of animal with hounds.

A: I just got the 2010 Colorado Big Game pamphlet a few days ago. It is illegal to use dogs to hunt bear, deer, elk, pronghorn or moose. Cougar was not covered, so try the website:

http://wildlife.state.co.us/

Good luck!

(Mya and Anne need some more knowledge of the real world before telling others what not to do.)

Q: Where is the best place to hunt black bear?
This will be my first time hunting ever and i want to get the biggest black bear i can find in North America. Where would you suggest I go?

A: Minnesota. We have over 30,000 black bears packed primarily into the northern portion of the state.

No offense to any other state, but Northern Minnesota has a population density that I doubt any other state can match.

So your chances will be great, but size wise most are average. Still, I have seen -many- large specimens with my own eyes.

The largest Minnesota bear that has been weighed was 876 pounds, but this was live weight.

Q: First Black bear hunt in montana?
Anyone ever hunt black bear? What tactics should I use, caliber of rifle etc. Only spot and stalk is allowed in montana. Any tips, hints etc. would be greatly appreciated!

A: Dont listen to these baiters, they are not real hunters. Baiting and waiting is for people who do not have the skills to find and stalk game.

It is admirable that Montana only allows spot and stalk tactics.

Basically you should talk with locals. If you know the current food source you wont have much of a problem finding them and stalking them ; )

Q: Which guide would you recommend for a Kodiak bear hunt?
I am in the process of planning a trip for the fall of ‘09 or the spring of ‘10.

A: have you checked out north american hunting club. The NRA web site has all kinds of links and reviews.

Q: Has there ever NOT been a bear hunt in West Virginia?
What I mean is has there ever been a year when there was no bear hunting season?

A: nope, we’ve had it every year and they taste good with biscuits and gravy

Q: Clue that leads to build a bear workshop and scavenger hunt list?
I am having a scavenger hunt birthday party and i need a clue to lead to build a bear workshop. a riddle maybe?
I am 15 and i am also in desperate need of a scavenger hunt list for the mall (please be as creative as possible and not too easy). It can cost money but it has to be a minimal amount. PLEASE HELP!

A: Hmm, just say easy stuff like turn right and that kind of thing.

Q: I am looking to start Bow Hunting for Black Bear and deer, any suggestions of a good bow?
Looking to buy a new bow for Black bear hunting and deer hunting, any suggestions would be great.

Q: Where is some good black bear hunting in southwest montana?
I’m looking for some good black bear hunting places on public land in Southwest Montana around Butte/Helena/Bozeman and between.

A: Drive your car to SW montana , stop in the woods, get out with your gun and shoot a bear! How hard is that?

Q: Black bear hunting in the United States?
I was wondering if there were states where you can, and people do, successfully black bear hunt in the US? If so what is the best state?

A: We have some black bear hunting in Michigan. Contact the DNR for information about getting the necessary permit.

Q: Black bear hunting in Maine – outfitter recommendations?
Would like to go black bear hunting in Maine this September, but have never been to Maine, never hunted black bear – any recommendations on good outfitters (and/or preferable regions of Maine)? Any other words of wisdom on black bear hunting also appreciated.

Q: How many ft-lbs of energy would you like to have when hunting black bear?
I have a 308 Win that I can nearly drive tacks with (1″ groups at 200 yds consistently) but I am concerned about the terminal ballistics while hunting bear. The bears in my area aren’t too big, 200-300 lbs maybe and I’m wondering what my maximum ethical range should be. Also I dont want to wound a bear and follow it into the brush, not my idea of fun.

A: I am a long time Alaskan hunter, trapper, and military competition shooter.

1″ groups at 200 yards is not tack driving. Shooting at the target, pasting over the hole, and shooting into the same hole again and again all afteroon long – and not having a hole much larger than the first – that is tack driving. 1″ groups at 500 yards is tack driving.

Black bears are no where near as tough as brown. The 308 is probably the absolutly best round to use on black bear from close in to 400+ yards. Black bears do not have a large sectional density – so – any rifle with more power than a 308 is simply just going to pass through the animal and be no help at all………. except to maybe wound a second animal behind the first and make more noise.

Rule of thumb with bear hunting – you keep shooting until the bear stops moving – this rule will prevent you from having to track a wounded bear. Shot placement is only critical when the bear is in a heavy covered brush area and getting only one good shot off is possible……. ideally you want to fire whent the bear has strayed into an area where you can get several shot off at it before it can reach cover.

Generally, if you see a bear today – you can show up earlier and catch it again tomorrow. Keep this in mind – because some bears will look great up front – and their butt or side can be so badly rubbed the hide is worthless and beyond what a skilled taxidermist can fix.

My bear hunting buddy and I were glassing a huge grizzly in Sitka one morning. It was a nice big bear, big head, nice fur on the sides……. and then it turned around and whole butt was totally hairless! It looked like the bear had pulled down it’s pants and was mooning us – just two big bald cheeks and a butt crack a plumber would be proud to own. I couldn’t help myself – I started laughing….I could barely keep it in, my buddy was holding my head to keep the snickers from leaking out….. and the bear heard me and started looking our way. Laughing almost got us killed.

It pays to spend the extra time glassing a bear before you shoot it. But, try to keep out of laughing distance. Bears do funny things.

Your standard 150gr soft point bullet will work fine. Winchester ‘Black Talons’ or any handload using a Barnes X bullet will work best. You want to break bones and damage vital organs – bullets like these – and Nosler Partitions – retain their original weight and do a better job when performing a quartering shot.

Black bear meat is totally awesome! Wondeful pot roasts, steaks and chops – and sausage to die for. Any sausage recipie that calls for pork you can use black bear, just add extra tallow to make up for the bear meat being lean. If you get one – email me – I have some award winning sausage recipies.

That, and black bear tallow and fat makes excellent high quality soap. If you have the fat turned into soap – I can guarantee you, your wife will be all over you asking when you are going to go hunting again.

Hope this helps.

Q: Michigan Black bear hunting tips please?
Hello im leaving to go black bear hunting in Ontanogon michigan. In the Upper peneinsula.

I would just like any tips you guys could give me for black bear hunting since this will be my first time hunting bear.

Any tips would be appreciated .

thank you

A: Been bear hunting my whole life they are my favorite hunt. Hounds and bait work best otherwise glass south facing slopes early in the morning they look like burnt stumps at first so look close. Be carefull not to shoot a sow with cubs even if it is leagle (probably not) it is immoral. Don’t rush your shot bears have poor vision but good noses so wait and harvest humanly. Good luck and the thing you should be most carefull of is becoming addicted and going back year after year. They are very good table fare as well. Salami pepperoni and sausage are best however the backstrap of a well fed baited bear is very nice also…..Now I have to defrost some sausage 4 breakfast tomorow.

Q: what is a good rifle for hunting black bear?
what caliber and rifle are best for hunting black bear and grizzly bear?

A: I have taken both species in Canada and British Columbia. I used a 7mm Remington Magnum and a 300 Winchester Magnum and they both took care of business. If I had to recommend anything else, I would suggest something in 30-06 minimum or larger, preferably a magnum.

Q: I’ll be hunting black bear with a 308win, and most likely not taking a shot beyond 75 yards?
what bullet or factory ammo would you recommend?

A: A 165 gr bullet should do the job, but personally, given the short distances involved with most black bear hunting, I’d opt for the 180 gr. The reason is that black bear can get pretty big. If you get your sights on a trophy of a lifetime, the larger bullet should give you better penetration and carry more energy with it.

For factory ammo, Federal Premium makes some great hunting loads. They make some 180 gr. rounds loaded with Nosler Partition bullets or the Barnes MRX.

Another good bullet is the plain old Remington Core-Lokt ammo (the plain Remington Green box). The Core-Lokt bullets do hold together quite well and I have had good luck with them.

Personally, I think the best compromise between quality and price is the Federal Fusion ammo. They are good quality bonded bullets, but they are still pretty cheap (about the same price as the Remington Green Box). If cost is an issue, I would go with these.

Here is a link to MidwayUSA. They have quite an extensive list of ammo for the 308 Win.

http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?categoryString=653***690***&categoryId=7556&tabId=3&brandId=0&refineSearchKeyword=&sort_results_by=manufacturer_a&pageNum=0&numberOfResults=500

Good Luck and happy hunting

Q: Whats the best gun to use if your going black bear hunting?

A: I personally use a remington model seven rifle in .243 caliber. I like the accuracy and low recoil.

Q: Black Bear Hunting Tomorrow!!?
My Father, My Brother, My Dads best friend and My best Friend are heading up north to do a bear hunt. Me and my best friend, its our first time and i was wondering what you were thinking on the choices we picked for rifles. He picked a Remington Model 700 CDL SF limited edition topped with a 3-9×40 mm bushnell elite 3200 in a 30-06 shooting 180 grain silver tips (not ballistic silver tips, just silver tips) and i picked a remington model 700 BDL topped with a 3.5-12x, 42mm Nikon monarch in a 7mm rem mag shooting 160 grain accubond CT.

I expect to get one because last week a bunch of americans went up to hunt black bear and they got 15 black bears as big as 400 lbs-450 lbs. Now that sounds unreal, dont get me wrong i didn’t believe it at first but its true. Thats one hell of a big hunting party and thats one hell of a turn out. Hopefully my little hunting party can bring home a couple decent bears.

A: True that most Northern Black bears top out at 450 lb, but back in the boonies, some get twice that large. The 30-06 180 grainers at full power and good hits at reasonable range should be fine even on the big ones. The 160 grain 7mm Maggies are a great 700 yard deer or 500 yard elk round (assuming you can hit at that distance), but the “Northern backwoods triple-sized” Black bears are not on the menu. However, the regular 450 lb ones are.

Do be aware that recently Grizzlies have made a comeback in some Northern areas, and 200 grain bullets are absolutely necessary on the bigger ones, with that thick gristle plate on them and that thick skull.

Q: How dangerous is Black Bear hunting? ?
I recently took the NY state hunter education course as a refresher and the instructors described black bear hunting as dangerous, to the extent that I always thought grizzly bear hunting would be. For example they said that other bears can come in after a shot is fired and these bears will potentially stalk hunters that shot at them if they are not killed. Is hunting black bear often a dangerous experience? I know that all bears deserve respect but have any of you encountered dangerous black bears afield? I have little field experience but would like to hunt these animals with the appropriate caliber rifle and cartridge as well as plenty of “range practice” is it a bad choice of game animal to start with?
I appreciate all of the informative responses and personal experiences that you shared. In New York you are not allowed to bait game. Regarding bear meat how does it compare to venison?

A: I am glad I did not take a hunter ed course in NY. It sounds as though you were fed a lot of misinformation.
You have to respect an animal that can turn you into it’s dinner. But, they are not going to stalk you just because they were shot at.
You should use a rifle caliber as large as you can shoot accurately. Shot placement is more important than rifle caliber. Anything .270 and larger, with a well-placed and accurate shot, will kill a black bear. They have been taken with smaller calibers, but I would not recommend it.
If you do shoot a bear, wait a short time before you approach. Watch to see if it is breathing. Approach from behind before checking it physically. This will give you an advantage if it does get back up. If its eyes are closed, it IS NOT dead. Animals do not die with their eyes closed. I have always been of the mindset that another round into the vitals never hurts. Good luck and be safe.

Q: When is black bear hunting season in B.C, vancouver?
when does the season start and on march, would you see any black bears around this time of the season? The weather appears to be getting warm.

A: its actaully in september

Q: black bear hunting rifle?
is my 30-06 springfield stong enough to go black bear hunting with a 220 grain bullet.

A: heck yes, put em down brother.

Q: black bear hunting?
how do you feel about black bear hunting… is it cool? etc…

A: It is cool as far as I know, I just wish I could find a way to get out to do it.

Q: where can i find free hunting games on the net?
are there any free hunting games like deer bear..ect that i can play over the net???thanks..i have did the search engine thing and i havent found one yet..

A: Guns and Ammo used to have a few. Try their web site. Also, try the site for Ammoman.com as they have some neat stuff on there.

Q: What is the best factory loaded bullet for 7mm rem mag deer/bear hunting?
The 150gr. Federal using Sierra Game King looks good, but what is a bullet that will not come apart at velocities of +3100fps? I heard Remington’s core lokts have that problem

A: I’d be very happy with loads using any of these:
Barnes TSX from 140-160gr or 150gr Tipped TSX(not sure if these are in factory loads yet)
Nosler Partition 150-175gr or E-Tip 150gr
Winchester XP3 160gr
Trophy Bonded Bearclaw or TB Tip. 160-175gr
Hornady’s Gilding Metal Expanding(GMX) would be alright in 139gr but it they have a 150gr or heavier one yet I’d pick it

The Federal Premium Vital-Shok line has most of these.
Winchester Supreme has the E-Tip and XP3

Just my opinion but I don’t much like light to medium weight plain cup & core bullets in the small and/or fast magnums. For any game animal larger or tougher then deer at least the HEAVY conventional bullets or good premium designs are a better choice.

Q: Bear Hunting Holiday Help?
what do you or the hunting place do after youve killed a big game like a bear or something big, like how do you get it out of the woods, and do you have to eat it all, beause out of all the game killed you cant eat it all, and do you take any of it home

A: ohhh boy this is where the real work begins.
you drag them out, yes i said drag. after the downed bear is found you field dress it. then you drag it out to the neaarest road or trail and hopfully set it in to your atv and drive it back to camp, where its butchered and eaten- bear will taste just fine you might like it more than beaf who knows ; )

Q: Which gun would be best for hunting a big game animal like a bear?

A: I would go with a remington 700 in .300 WSM it has a flat trajectory and a high velocity. And it has the knock down capabilities to handle grizzly if you hit vitals.

Q: What are the best hunting dogs(more info than yesterday)?
Ok, I am in the lower peninsula of Michigan, and I would be hunting big game(deer, bear) and MAYBE some birds.I would like a dog to be great at hunting but also a very nice dog(to me). Which is the best hunting dog for me and the terrain im on.
I was thinkin a lab or something, or maybe a bloodhound

A: Well you’re trying to get double and triple duty out of a single dog. Most are trained to do one thing and do it very well. When I used to use dogs on deer, when it was still legal in my state that is, I had several Weimerainer’s. They were quite good at circling deer and hogs. I wouldn’t know about bear. I found them to be very good with people, and focused on the hunt. As another reader said, they aren’t really bred to retrieve but will with a lot of work.

For retrieving, I have used Brittany Spaniels and Labs. The Britts were a little rambunctious and if not worked every day they tended to get a little rowdy. They also were very one person types as were the Weimers. The labs are what I settled on and I still train and raise them. Talk about a family dog, they will walk right up to a toddler and lick them in the face and if the kiddo falls they’ll pick him right back up. They are very bright and depending on what you get they can have quite a lot of character. I had a chocolate that would sneak birds away from my buddies and bring em to me when they weren’t looking. He was something. Everyone loved him, but learned to count their birds when he came around.

Good Hunting and good luck!

Q: Pitbull Fighting vs. Bear Hunting?
I’m asking this question on behalf of someone else.

In terms of killing animals unjustly, why is pitbull fighting illegal, and the killing of wild game such as bears legal? Why is turkey hunting legal, but bird fighting illegal?

A: Hunting animals by humans in the wild during sanctioned hunts (ie: not poaching) serves a decent purpose, it helps keep population levels in a range that allows them to be healthy. Over population can cause sickness, starvation and depletion of natural resources. In other words too much of a good thing can be just as bad as too little.
Animals in the wild have their wits about them and can evade hunting and even if spotted have a decent chance at getting away. While they may not ask to be hunted, they generally are not kept in a corral for you to shoot at whenever you want. (The exception to this are hunt farms- those I think should be outlawed!)
Pitbulls are bred to fight. They are given no opportunity to escape from the people fighting them. They are subjected to horrific training practices such as bite training where their jaws lock on a target attached to a spring and hung from a rafter in a garage, provoked into attacking weaker dogs and sometimes puppies, being starved, beaten -I could go on..but you get the idea.
There really is no comparison between hunting and pit fighting. I hope this helps.

Q: What’s the best Bow for hunting Bears or larger game?
The Ultimate Bow!?!
I just want to know, i love bears and im not going to hunt them. Bears are really big and well i cant go hunt Dinosaurs duh.

A: Each person has his or her own idea of the ultimate bow. Just use one that suits you, has enough draw weight to do the job, and you can shoot accurately. And be sure you have an adequate broadhead for bear on the end of the arrow.

Q: is there any hunting games out for the 360 that plays like tho old games did?
what i mean is i want a good hunting game like the ones for the ps2 where you picked you equipment and stuff then it put you in front of a lodge and said hunt it didnt say ok their is a dear right in front of you shoot it and it will open a cutscene where a bear will attack you and other gay crap. the first dangerous hunts was like this and i loved it but i cant find any for the 360 the new big game hunter is arcadey and tells you where to go all the time

A: I believe Cabelas has a game out. Comes with a gun.

Q: What brand of bolt action rifle is the best for hunting and what is the best for military?
Hunting large game like, deer, elk, buffalo, bear. Sako? watherby? Remington? Browning? Winchester? Ruger? Kimber? ect……

A: You dident list anything that wont work just your choice on slight difereces in function, looks (admit it guys it matters) fit, weight and any other criteria you chose oh, also pocket book. caliber is your choice in any of them. just pick a caliber that will ethicaly kill what you are hunting. militay the m24 (m700 rem) is an exelent gp rifle for snipers. in my day we carried m21 (accurised m14) it was not quite as accuate as the m24 but has its stringths. no mater what one guy chooses some other guy says his is better and can prove it with facts. but what matters most is the shooter. the snipers of ww11 used rifles that would hardly be considerd “snipers rifles” today but noone can say they werent effective. there is no such thing as a sniper rifle, there are snipers and the equipment they use.

Q: What hunting rifle should i buy? mossberg 100 atr or the marlin xl7/xs7?
i think im leaning towards the marlin because ive had a lot of good experience with them, but id still like the input. also what size round would you reccomend, 30-06, 308, or 7mm-08 i plan on hunting the larger game like bear, elk, caribou, moose, and buffalo.

A: Of these I would go with the marlin in 308. Less recoil so it is easier to shoot accurately. I agree with the guy who says to look at a savage, very accurate out of the box. Remember accuracy is what really counts, a miss with any caliber is a wasted shot.

Q: Lets Go Bear Hunting!Bear Fans .This is where it ends!GO COLTS!!!!!!!!!?
As A colts fan i am looking forward to this superbowl because the Patriots and Ravens are a heck of a lot better than Grossman and his pack of over rated bearcubs. And since the colts beat baltimore and New England this game should be like us playing the Raiders they seem to lose all their games .Any comments ?comments from all the above mentioned teams would be greatly appriciataed.

A: LOUD AND PROUD IN INDIANA!!

GO COLTS!!

WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW!!

YOUR ANSWER IS IN THE VIDEO

Q: Can you train hunting dogs to point/flush and retrieve birds and big game?
I was just wondering if it is possible to train a hunting dog to point/flush and retrieve birds such as waterfowl and upland birds and also train them to hunt big game possessing two skills in one dog? I am trying to get two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, but would like them to hunt birds and bay big game such as deer and bears. So, with that said, is it possible to have them learn both hunting skills or is it only one skill or the other?? Thanks!

A: Dogs usually cannot be trained to do both because once he comes across another scent like a deer while bird hunting he will run off on that trail….unless he is like a blood hound trained to chase one scent.

Get yourself 2-3 dogs……because deer hunting is about being quiet unless you use the dog to drive the deer like mine. My black lab is amazing…..he is a great water dog for ducks and he loves to chase deer and anything else you let him scent sniff. I let a buddy hold him until I get in position at the clearing south of a about 100acres of woods and then we let him lose on the North side and he tracks all deer in the woods and flushes them out to the clearing were I take them down. He also will flush quail, dove and retrieve them cause he has a super nose.
I could never find a bird in the tall grass or wheat without him……..He is just so damn smart. When I get my gun he gets excited and goes and gets my boots……..

Q: breeds that were originally bred to hunt bear and big game?
im writing a story and want to have some of those breeds in it could you give me a list of some and a general description of their temperament? oh and what it was they hunted?

doesnt have to be a breed still used for it. thanks

A: “The Karelian Bear Dog is skillful, tough, and energetic. A robust, persistent, and powerful dog, it is willing to take on virtually any game animal.”

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/karelianbeardog.htm

“The Ainu dog is intelligent and quickly trained. This large game hunter is extremely courageous for its size, willing to attack a 650 pound bear!”

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/ainudog.htm

“In the late 19th century, big game hunters needed a hunting dog that was tough, resistant to disease, and intelligent enough to avoid crocodiles and snakes, but brave and fast enough to face a lion.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodesian_Ridgeback

Q: Why is it legal to “hunt” captive animals, while bear baiting and rooster fighting are illegal?
First of all, let’s clarify my position: I support traditional hunting and fishing, and champion the concept of sportsmanship and stewardship of natural resources. I enjoy eating meat, and appreciate ecology and the natural beauty of fauna. Traditional hunting has many beneficial aspects.

Private hunting reserves – game ranches – deer farms: these are commercial sites where “hunters” pay to kill captive animals. Presumably the outcome is guaranteed by the proprietors.

A fighting cock has a chance to survive. A captive bear has a chance to kill one of its attackers. These barbaric “sports” have been outlawed for centuries in most places.

What could be the motive to “hunt” captive animals, other than the joy of seeing something die? Do you think of someone as more manly who kills captive animals on hunting ranches? Am I missing some redeeming aspect of this activity?

Maybe by releasing their agression on an animal, they avoid doing so on a fellow human? Or does it stimulate it?
Sorry – Yahoo has chosen to edit my traditional term for the male rooster and replace it with askerisks. It wasn’t my choice to spell it this way.
Interesting point, “Mass brain”. Maybe we should start a discussion on the morality of the situation depicted in the movie “The Running Man”, with politicians or lawyers instead of criminals as the targets… There are some parallels.
Good answer there, “DamDawg”. I guess it all hinges on the definition of “shooting fish in a barrel” and how you define it.

I haven’t researched this too much, but my understanding is that most of these private reserves are pretty close to what you are describing here. Do you have any data to share?

I have seen some video footage of bow-and-arrow “hunters” shooting deer in a manner that looked very cruel and very much like “shooting fish in a barrel”.

I think that, if the proprietor guarantees the outcome, then it is more likely to be unsporting.
Hey There Wazant1 -

You too have some interesting points. If you are a traditional hunter, I respect that, as I previously stated.

You discussed the increasing efficiency of hunting techniques. I wonder how much something is a “sport” when the outcome is guaranteed.

Why is it fun to shoot an animal under controlled conditions but not at a slaughterhouse? How close do the two facilities need to become before we cross the line?

Have you heard about the internet game preserves, where you can kill an animal from the internet, via robotically controlled rifle? Has that crossed the line?

A: As space open to the public for hunting shrinks this will most likely become a bigger issue. The vast majority of pheasant hunted in America today are domestically reared. There are almost no wild pheasant left. Are these pheasant treated any less humanely than the millions of chickens consumed by Americans every year? I don’t think so. At least the pheasants enjoy a little freedom.

Also stocking trout is common everywhere—isn’t this a form of hunting?

Today there are more ducks than ever in history because “Ducks Unlimited” a private hunting club, has purchased important properties to protect the wild ducks’ flyways. Are they wrong to then hunt some of these ducks—I don’t think so.

I am not sure about hunting larger domestic/wild game. I suppose it depends on how they are treated and if they are humanely hunted in a relative free environment. If it’s shooting fish in a barrel I am against it.

As for Rooster fighting, bear baiting, dog fighting and such, I am against them because the animals are generally kept in awful conditions and the animals are allowed to maul each other and suffer great pain just for the thrill of it. It brings out the worst in man and beast. Hunting on the other hand is as old as man.

PS. I would tend to agree with you that a guaranteed outcome would indicate that the animal was not given enough free range. I am against any kind of caged hunting and I guess that might include small ranches with game-fences.

Q: Grizzly bear hunting ?
I need a new Grizzly bear skin for my cabin`s lounge. Where is a good place in the states to shoot one. Money is not a problem. Any info on locations and tariffs for planning a hunt would be apreciated.
Hey Newfy…You made me smile ! Now I can return to work. I still need the adress of a hunting outfitter.

A: hey man i thought you took a week of from work cos you killed a mosquito

and here you are killing bears

.lol
.

edit;; next time you go hunting grizzly, dont forget to take your mozzy repellent ,we dont want you crying if you accidentally kill one of those tiny critters .LOL

.
.

.

Q: What’s a Handgun Fit For Grizzly Bear Hunting Without A Lot Of Recoil Like The .44 Magnum?

A: Don’t listen to anyone who says a .357 is a good choice for grizzly bear. It is Highly debated whether the .44 mag is enough for Grizzly defense, let alone Grizzly hunting. Without going to a shotgun with slugs or a rifle, you should go bigger than the .44, people love the SW .500. I have a .44 mag and find that I enjoy shooting it more than my 9 mm and .45 ACP. Felt recoil is more about how the gun fits you than the power of the cartridge.

Q: Which is the best caliber for hunting deer, elk and grizzly bear with the same rifle?
I’ve been reading a little and I’ve seen articles about these animals. The suggested calibers ranged between the .243 Win and the .338 Win Mag, but which one is the best for taking all of them down, without ruining the meat of a whitetail and ensuring the death of grizzly with one shot?
If you disagree there is one caliber for taking all of them down for sure without ruinign the deer’s meat, suggest two calibers.

A: If you are new to hunting/shooting sports a .338 Winchester Magnum is going to be a bit much. Deer to grizzly bears is a wide range. Deer are easy to kill, where as grizzly bears are not. As others have suggested, I would look towards a medium bore cartridge. You could get something along the lines of a .338-06 A Square, 35 Whelen, 9.3×62, .338 Winchester Mag, .340 Weatherby, 9.3×64 Brenneke, .375 H&H(or Ruger) or any number of wildcats. These would all prove effective against grizzly bears. I have a few in this range that and have had quite a few others. Currently, I have a 9.3×62 built on a FN Mauser action that is the superb. 286gr Nosler partitions at 2400fps is good medicine for anything in NA. I’ve also got an 8mm-06 Ackley Improved built on a German Mauser and a 8mm-338 Improved on a Whitworth Mauser. I’ve had .358 Norma, .340 WBY, .375 Taylor, .35-348 Improved, among others.

Q: What Crossbow is the best when it comes to hunting a Grizzly Bear? ?
And what brand is the best?

Thanks

Cheers
Josey

A: im going to say Excalibur but i wouldn’t trust a crossbow you should beng a 9mm handgun and 2 hunting knives staysafe

                                       Good hunting

                                            big j

Q: How do you kill a grizzly bear?
I’m not going bear hunting, just curious. What do people use to kill wild grizzly bears?

A: Well all the bear hunters I know here in Alaska use one of these rifles; .300 mag, .338 win mag, 7mm mag, .375 H&H mag although there are some others those are the most often used.
No matter the rifle we all use heavy bullets designed to stay together for deep penetration through bone, heavy muscles and think hide.
I use the .338 Winchester magnum.

There are people who shoot them with bows and black powder rifles although that’s not as common as magnum rifles.

There are rumors that some have killed grizzlies by just showing them a picture of Nancy Pelosi nude.

<<<<<<>>>
By the way H gave a real detailed answer that’s on spot. Pretty well covers it I must say.

Q: whey is it that Canada approves grizzly + polar bear hunting, when this bears are on the endanger list -?
makes me sad — – my CANADA -

A: Actually Polar Bears are designated as a vulnerable species (Threatened, not endangered under the ESA)with only 5 of 19 subpopulations in actual, verified, decline. The IUCN lists global warming and not hunting as the primary threat to polar bear populations.

While it may be your Canada it is also the Inuit People’s Canada. The economy of many Native villages rests solely on money brought in by hunting guides.

As for Grizzly Bears, populations have been increasing steadily and it has been recomended that they be removed from ESA altogether.

Q: Is a 12 Ga shot gun with 00 busckshot good to kill a bear, possibly grizzly for protection, not hunting?

A: It would work- at close range buckshot is devastating. That is actually the back up weapon of choice in Africa when lion hunting.

Q: Just curious, what is the smallest caliber you could hunt a grizzly bear with?
And live to tell about it.

A: I have a 220 swift I could very easily hit a dime at 100 yards with. I’d try one shot to the eye ball, but if the bear doesn’t drop, I’m going home.

Q: What bullet weight for 300 wsm elk moose hunting 200gr or 220gr .This is a grizzly bear country .?

A: GlacierWolf is right on about there being sooooo many variables. But one thing is for sure!! The heavy bullet is KING!! I have been in Alaska for 40 years and there are countless numbers of opinions on hunting. All those generations of big and dangerous game hunters are not wrong.

I was guiding a guy from Texas and he had his trusty 300 Weatherby with 180gr. Barnes X. I tried to mention that he needed heavier rounds but he insisted that his world class Weatherby was enough!! He shot a grizzly 5 times. 4 were very accurate kill zone shots, but he charged us and the guy was out of ammo. I fired a single round from a 450 Marlin using a 405 grain solid bullet maxed out @ 2200fps and over 4000 ft lb. The big guy wadded up on his face in two steps. When field dressed the wounds from the 300 were ok but looked shallow. The 450 entered the neck and exited the opposite HIND quarter.

There are lots and lots of great ammo. Get some 200s for your elk or whatever you think is good for you. But please keep the 220s loaded in the rifle until you see something you want to hunt. You will have plenty of time to slip in your favorite round.

My wife carries the 338 and I like my 358 Norma. Perfect for all things in NA and easy to shoot. Accurate past 400yards and does not make a big mess of valuable meat.

Q: Bear Hunting With the Pope?
The Pope took a couple of days off to visit the Rugged Mountains of Alaska for some sightseeing. He was cruising along the campground in the Pope Mobile when there was a frantic commotion just at the edge of the woods. A helpless Democrat, wearing sandals, shorts, a “Save the Whales” hat, and “To Hell with Bush” T-shirt, was screaming while struggling frantically and thrashing around trying to free himself from the grasp of a 10-foot grizzly bear. As the Pope watched in horror, a group of Republican loggers came racing up. One quickly fired a .44 magnum into the bear’s chest. The other two reached up and pulled the bleeding, semiconscious Democrat from the bear’s’ grasp. Then using long clubs, the three loggers finished off the bear and two of them threw it onto the bed of their truck while the other tenderly placed the injured Democrat in the back seat. As they prepared to leave, the Pope summoned them to come over. “I give you my blessing for your brave actions!” he told them. “I heard there was a bitter hatred between Republican loggers and Democrat Environmental activists but now I’ve seen with my own eyes that this is not true.” As the Pope drove off, one of the loggers asked his buddies “Who was that guy?”

“It was the Pope,” another replied. “He’s in direct contact with Heaven and has access to all wisdom.”

“Well,” the logger said, “he may have access to all wisdom but he sure doesn’t know anything about grizzly bear hunting! By the way, is the bait holding up, or do we need to go back to Massachusetts and get another one?

A: Long but not too funny. 6/10.

Q: Will grizzly bears actively hunt black bears for food?
It’s common knowledge that grizzlies, being so much larger, can and have killed black bears. But do these scenarios mostly happen when they cross paths by accident, or fight over territory? Being a good hunter, I suspect a grizzly would have plenty of easier choices to hunt, animals that wouldn’t fight back as much, fewer battle scars. Or will grizzlies hunt black bears as they would any other animal?

A: Grizzlies will even attack each other over territory, food, or mating privileges. The smaller less aggressive black bear does not even have a chance against the more larger mean tempered grizzlies.

Q: Is it legal to harpoon a Grizzly Bear?
My uncle, my friend Joe, and me are going to Alaska on a hunting trip and we wanted to know if it was legal to harpoon the grizzly bear in Alaska?

A: I’m not sure, but watch out for those Wolverines !! They once attacked my cousin and I shot it with a 12 guage !! I mean what would you do in a situation like that ?

Q: what are some great places to go brown bear hunting on the alaskan penisula?
I’m going hunting in 2 years in alaska for bear and i know that the penisula is supposed to be pretty good for brown bear but i would like a more specific are. Plz help.

A: Your guide will tell you if you are lucky enough that your guide gets tags. I can tell you have not done much research. Non-residents cannot hunt brownies in Alaska unless you are with a guide and use his tags. Expect 10k to 20k to hunt there. Its a supply and demand market and fees are high.

BTW I doubt a 14yr old can go there alone and hire a Guide for 10-20k.

Q: How much would a guided brown bear hunt in Alaska hunt?

A: $10,000 is about the average price.

Q: I have a .338 win mag (Tikka) that I plan to take on a brown bear hunt. What power scope should I mount on it?

A: 3×9x40 is all you’ll need.

Q: Bear hunting.?
Every year, Bob goes hunting during bear season. One year, Bob goes hunting, and shoots a small brown bear. Then, the mother of that small brown bear comes up to him and says, ” I’ll give you two choices, I’ll either kill you, or make love to you, but I won’t let you go.”

Bob thinks on this, and decides he wants to live, so the mother bear then makes love to him.

The next year, Bob goes hunting again, but this time, he shoots the mother bear that he was forced to make love to the year before. He shoots her, and her mother comes after Bob, and again, gives him the choice. “I will make love to you, or kill you, which will it be??”

Again, Bob makes love to a bear.

The next year, Bob goes once again for revenge, and kills the bear that he was forced to make love to the year before.

This time, her sister comes up to Bob and says, “You don’t come here for the hunting, do you?”
I got it frm a website

A: LOL.

Q: Bear hunting funny or not?
Frank was excited about his new rifle. So, he went bear hunting. He spotted a small brown bear and shot it. There was then a tap on his shoulder, and he turned around to see a big black bear.
The black bear said: “You’ve got two choices.
I either maul you to death or we have rough sex.”

Frank decided to bend over. Even though he felt sore for two weeks, Frank soon recovered and vowed revenge. He headed out on another trip where he found the black bear and shot it.

There was another tap on his shoulder.

This time a huge grizzly bear stood right next to him. The grizzly says: “That was a huge mistake, Frank. You’ve got two choices. Either I maul you to death or we have REALLY rough sex.”

Again, Frank thought it was better to comply. Although he survived, it would take several months before Frank finally recovered. Outraged he headed back to the woods, managed to track down the grizzly and shot it.

He felt sweet revenge, but then there was a tap on his shoulder. He turned around to find a giant polar bear standing there.

The polar bear says:
“Admit it, Frank, you don’t come here for the hunting, do you?”

A: I did laugh out loud. 11/10 If I ever go hunting will take some KY as a bear necessity. If U go down to the woods today, you’re in 4 a BIG suprise.

Q: Bear Hunting – Rate 1 to 10?
Frank was excited about his new rifle and decided to try bear hunting. He spotted a small brown bear and shot it.

Right after, there was a tap on his shoulder and he turned around to see a big black bear. The black bear said, “That was my cousin and you’ve got two choices … Either I maul you to death or we have sex.”

After considering briefly, Frank decided to accede to the latter alternative. Even though he felt sore for two weeks, Frank soon recovered and vowed revenge.

He headed out on another trip where he found the black bear and shot it. Right after, there was another tap on his shoulder.

This time a huge grizzly bear stood right next to him. The grizzly said, “That was a big mistake, Frank. That was my cousin and you’ve got two choices. Either I maul you to death or we have rough sex.” Again, Frank thought it was better to cooperate.

Although he survived, it took several months before Frank finally recovered. Outraged, he headed back to the woods, managed to track down the grizzly and shot it. He felt sweet revenge, but then there was a tap on his shoulder. He turned around to find a giant polar bear standing there.

The polar bear looked at him very sadly and said, “Admit it, Frank, you don’t come here for the hunting, do you?”

A: LOL that was really good considering I love bear hunting!!! I give it a 8!!! And a star good job

Q: Bear Hunting?
Bill’s all excited about his new rifle. So, he goes bear hunting in Alaska. The first bear he sees is a little brown bear, and he kills it with his first shot. There is a tap on his shoulder, and he turns around to see a big black bear.

The black bear says “You’ve got 2 choices. One, I maul you to death or Two, we have sex.” Bill bends over for the bear.

He’s sore for 2 days, but he recovers and vows revenge. Bill heads out on another trip to Alaska and he finds the black bear and kills him. At that moment there is a tap on his shoulder. A huge grizzly is standing right behind him. The grizzly says, “That was a big mistake. You’ve got 2 choices, Either I maul you to death or we have sex.” Bill bends over.

(cont’)
He survives, but he’s really hurting and takes quite a bit of time to recover. He’s outraged. Sure enough, he heads back to Alaska and finds the grizzly and shoots him at point blank range. There’s a tap on his shoulder. He turns around to find an enormous polar bear, and the polar bear says, “You don’t really come here for the hunting, do you?”

A: LOL……. thanks for a laugh……

Get This

A true Australian Ghost Story

This story happened a while ago in Brisbane, and even though it sounds
like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, it’s true.

John Bradford, a Sydney University student, was on the side of the
road hitch hiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a storm.

The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong
he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him.

Suddenly he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stopped.

John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got in the
car and closed the door, just to realize there was nobody behind the
wheel and the engine wasn’t on!

The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road and saw a curve
approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life.

Then, just before he hit the curve, a hand appeared through the window
and turned the wheel.
John, paralysed with terror, watched how the hand appeared every time
they came to a curve.

John saw the lights of a pub down the road so, gathering strength,
jumped out of the car and ran to it.

Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and asked for two shots of tequila.
He then started telling everybody about the horrible experience he
went through.

A silence enveloped everybody when they realized he was crying
and….wasn’t drunk.

About 15 minutes later, two guys walked into the same pub. They were
also wet and out of breath.

Looking around and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said
to the other, “Look, Bruce.. here’s the f*cking idiot that got in the
car while we were pushing it.”

BYE – Imtiyaz G

Q: What do you think of hunting wild animals. Bear hunting in the US?
Grizzly bears and brown bears are among many animals hunted for sport in the US and Canada. Why these animals should be hunted when they are not used for food and are only hunted for money.
Katmai National Preserve – Congress allows for hunting in national preserves so long as the other values of the preserve are also protected. The Board of Game allows for a brown bear hunt every other fall and spring. There were seven hunts from 1998 to 2002 with an average harvest of 18 bears. In the fall 2003/spring 2004 hunt, that number jumped to 34 bears. In the fall 2005/spring 2006 hunt, 35 bears were harvested. And this doesn’t count bears shot in defense of life and property, poached (as 7 were in 2003/2004), or taken for subsistence purposes. As recently as 2003, biologists for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game stated that about 16 bears every regulatory year (fall/spring) is sustainable, a figure that’s well below the harvest in recent years.

http://ga1.org/npca/alert-description.tcl?alert_id=3755212
Economic value of Katmai bears – One study commissioned by the University of Alaska’s Institute For Social and Economic Research found that visitors to Alaska who include a brown bear viewing experience in their itinerary spend almost twice as much on their vacation as the average visitor, and those people who visit Alaska specifically to view brown bears spend more than 2.5 times as much. The study further documented that one operator in Homer who takes visitors to the Katmai Preserve directly generates almost $1.5 million in visitor spending.

A: MODERN DAY HUNTING

Hunting in the wild in the old sense ,even for food is an idea of the past

3·000 animals have gone in extinction in the last 50 years
loss of habitat,is global and on a grand scale.

Humanity has overstepped the Natural accepted equilibrium.
And the Animal populations have shrunk too much for us to pretend to be predators and nibble at the numbers that are left

The animals we got ,are now important components of Eco systems which we cannot afford to reduce.

All the professional hunters that i Know in Africa and Canada have become involved in conservation.

If we set up parks and breed animals ,we can let people cull some of them at high fees under strict supervision and let them believe that they are still hunters.

In this sense the hunting aids conservation because part of the money returns to the management of the animals.

Although there are also unscrupulous operators under this concept ,who for example dart lions and then let the brave hunter shoot the drugged animals for fantastic fees, but these operations are detested by regular conservationists.

The only real hunting today In africa ,is done illegaly by poachers who shoot Tigers,Elephants and Rhino`s for body parts that have great value on the foreign markets

Urbanizations and expanding farming operations deforestation for the production of Ethanol (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ah5LAOusEOzikNgUWisH34fsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20070618163201AAyuI69
)
gives opportunities to collect the animals that now find themselves with out habitat

And the market in first world countries like the USA entices the poor from these Natural territories to hunt exotic animals for pets or for body parts such as the hides. And the only way to stop this is to stop deforestation and improve local economic conditions which will not even happen with the skies full of flying pigs.

And the USA still has hunting as part of their culture ,and they will regret it in the end when everything has gone

Q: what is the best gun caliber to use hunting elk and/or black bear?
i want to buy a browning rifle to hunt deer and wild boar, but is also the best for hunting for hunting elk and bear. what is the best caliber i should use?

A: I would agree with the 30-06, or 7mm mag.

Q: can a black bear and a brown bear have a baby?
ok, i was hunting once and there was a black bear with brownish legs.

A: yep – it is possible since they are in the same family, but they probably wouldnt interact properly in the wild – like tigers and lions wouldnt meet in the wild, but can still have babies – the liger/tigon
but you probably just saw a black bear with brown legs, since black bears can also be, as well as black, blue-black, cinnamon, brown, dark brown or even white in color

Q: is brown bear legal to hunt in the U.S.?
and can a 357 magnum take down a bear

A: The only place in the U.S. where you can find Brown Bears is in Alaska. They are a large cousin of the Grizzly(some say they are just Grizzlies that due to their diet of salmon are just larger). Yes it is legal to hunt them there, I believe if you are a non resident, you need to hire a licensed guide and carry either at least a .44 mag, 12 gauge slug gun or large cal hunting rifle.

Q: I answered a question so thoroughly about the Siberian Bear, I thought it would be the best answer.?
I answered with a lot of my own ideas, such as contacting different mammalogists, or bear keepers at larger zoos, who are usually more than glad to help, listings in Wikipedia, Britannica Online Encyclopedia, a video from youtube, Siberian Tiger vs. Grizzly Bear episode on TV.com,Siberian Brown Bear hunting / Russian Hunting Adventures,GenevaLunch » Siberian bears
Siberian brown bear (Ursus arctos L. 1758) Zoogeographical characteristic. Transpalearctic species. It belongs to the group of arctic-boreal species and a book on the Siberian Bear:
My question: what happened to my answer and several hours of work?

A: Did the person delete the question?
Searching for “Siberian Bear” didn’t show any questions in the last 2 years, so my guess is the person deleted the question.

Q: Why kill these brown bears for no reason?
CBS ran a segment on these brown bears in Alaska that have no fear of humans so people can photograph them or view them in their natural habitat. Next year throphy hunters will be allowed to murder these animals just for the trill of the kill. Oppose Hunting of Brown Bears Near the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, Alaska.
You can do a search at cbsnews.com for brown bear to read or view this story. This is a horrible situation please read if you are an animal lover.

A: It is so sad that people feel the need to kill for no reason. I too saw the segment and was shocked that anyone would want to kill such a beautiful animal. They should be left alone to live as they are without fear of being shot on by some moron with a gun who thinks “yeah this will look good on the wall”. I only wish that the bears could have guns to shoot back, unrealistic I know, but wouldn’t that teach the hunters.

Q: Why would one hunt black bear?
I saw a question here earlier about which rifle to use to hunt black bear.

Why would you want to hunt bear? Is it good eating? Are there too many around and they need to be thinned out?

I don’t hunt, but I’m not anti-hunting.

This question is simply to find out why one would hunt a bear.

A: Bear is ‘good eating’.
As to hunting them, while I wouldn’t want to see them disappear,
and kinda like to watch them in the wild, I do so very warily.
They have a ceratin visual appeal, but it would be unwise to consider them ‘cuddley critters’.
The bear is classified as a solitary, territorial, opportunistic, omnivore.
That means anything they see that moves is either food, or competition
for resources, and that they are anti-social and ‘untameable’.
They are large enough to easily harm a human and have been known to do so.
They have learned to fear man, but you still don’t want one too close to you.
When they start coming out of the woods into back yards etc.
they represent a hazard.
Population control is in order.

Q: Black bear hunting in the United States?
I was wondering if there were states where you can, and people do, successfully black bear hunt in the US? If so what is the best state?

A: We have some black bear hunting in Michigan. Contact the DNR for information about getting the necessary permit.

Q: Guided Black Bear Hunt…?
I just booked a guided black bear hunt to go on with my bow in the heart of Maine…

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for my hunt…

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated…

I will be going the last week in August…

A: Watch out for mosquitoes. And have fun.

Q: What is the smallest caliber you could hunt black bear with?
gf needs something with little to no kick… thanks

A: Joe,

You need to apply a little country boy logic here. You don’t say where you’re hunting, but Black Bears can get really big. They do tend to be a little lighter down south (Average around 350 lbs.), but up north around PA they have them in the 700 pound range. Now that is small Grizzly weight. The last couple of years they have killed bears over 500 pounds in NW Arkansas. So you do the math and prepare for the worst scenario. Don’t go out with anything less than a .270 with heavy bullets. You can buy her a shooting jacket with padded shoulder and put a super pad on the stock, but don’t put her at risk just to save a little recoil. You might also consider a semi-auto, as they kick a little less because some the recoil energy is used making the action function. Enjoy.

Q: I am looking to start Bow Hunting for Black Bear and deer, any suggestions of a good bow?
Looking to buy a new bow for Black bear hunting and deer hunting, any suggestions would be great.

Thanks, Matt

A: Ninja Bow

Q: What kind of dogs are used to hunt black bear? Would a beagle be used?

A: I’ve had some experience hunting Black Bears with Dogs in several states here on the east coast and out west. I’m pretty familiar with the breeds but would hardly consider myself an expert on the subject. I will share what I know…….Beagles can and have been used to track and chase Bears, but because of their size limitations and short legs, they seem to burn out in a short period of time.Hounds on the other hand are full of energy and built almost perfect for Bear hunting. The most popular breeds according to the Outfitters I’ve hunted with are English “Redtick” Coon Hounds, Black & Tan Coon Hounds,”Bluetick” Coon Hounds, Treeing Walker Hounds and “Plott” Hounds. I’m sure there are more but these are the ones I remember…The breeds I listed are American Breeds except the “Plott Hounds” with were brought over from Germany at the turn of the century. Plott’s were used over there (Germany) for hunting Wild Boar. These Hound breeds are the main ones used for big game, Bear and Mountain Lions, because of their stamina, speed, scenting/tracking abilities and are good swimmers. They all have their own distinctive howls and even though I have been clueless, the Outfitters I’ve hunted with, can even tell which dog is which from it’s “voice”. Pretty cool to get a chance to witness them in action.Hope this at least answers parts of your question…..

Q: What is the best round for black bear, thats not hard on the shoulder?
Me and my son are going on a black bear hunt in AZ. What is the best round to shoot it with I was just going to get him a new rifle. He is like 5′7 and weighs like 155. He is also 13 but he has shot only shotguns (12 gauge with bird shot). What is a good round for him. What about a 300 wsm or the 7mm mag

A: I bought my first 30-06 when I was 14 and haven’t been without one since,so that would be my cartridge of choice. It is well supported by every ammo loader and you can get anything from Reduced Recoil 110 grains that my 12 year can shoot to 220 grain that would take about anything down,at least in most of North America. I use 165 grain Bonded core bullets for deer and elk, could use 180 grain bullets;which I do recommend for the bear hunting. A controlled expansion or bonded bullet will provide proper expansion and weight retention when you need it most. Most important is making sure your son isn’t getting his shoulder bombed and becoming recoil shy,so start out with 150 factory ammo and work up. Then you want to study bear (and other animals you plan to hunt) anatomy to make sure you can hit the vital areas to take out the heart and lungs with a good shot–and teaching when not to shoot.

The 7mm Mag has similar recoil to the 30-06,but the 300 WSM would be too much recoil for a 13 year old. I have a 300 WSM and switching back to the 06 after shooting that is pure joy.He sounds pretty solid, but even I wince at the thought of getting a lot of time behind the 300,and he needs to be comfortable with the rifle to shoot well. So, I would get a 30-06 and then he would have a rifle to use forever. I hunt in Idaho and get shots from close to 400 yards to 30 feet and the 30-06 has never left me disappointed.

Q: Looking to hunt black bear?
I need some info on states allowing non resident bear hunting. and any expeirences or knowledge you may pass on.

A: I go to minnesota. Every year I have applied for a permit I recieved one. the License is 250, a guide (bear baiter) is about 500 and week in a hotel is another 250. Very reasonable hunt, beautiful country and good people. Success rate is about 80%. I can post pictures of my bear as well.

Q: When does Black Bear season begin and end in Tennessee?
I was looking to go on a black bear hunt in Tennessee after christmas but i am not sure when it begins or ends? can someone please help? thanks.

A: I don’t know but this has nothing to do with fishing.

Q: Should ontario reinstate the black bear hunt?

A: First I am against killing animals, but if they become a threat to humans or to other animals (due to overpopulation), may answer is yes.

Q: I am looking to start Bow Hunting for Black Bear and deer, any suggestions of a good bow?
Looking to buy a new bow for Black bear hunting and deer hunting, any suggestions would be great.

Thanks, Matt

A: Ninja Bow

Q: Are there any stores in the Sacramento, California area where I can get the Bear Young Gun hunting compund bow?
I dont want to buy the bow off the internet because im probably gonna have a lot of questions for the salesman.

A: Rather than get a bow for hunting, why not get a camera & take photos?

Q: Whats the best recurve bow for bear and deer hunting?
i would like a strong one, whats the highest draw strength for a recurve bow?
sonny,if their wasnt hunters out killing deer they would become over populated and all the deer would die during winter.hunters have replaced natural predators like wolves and bear, big cats.It is a nessesary evil, and lots of fun too

A: I use an old Fred Bear Grizzly re-curve. 50 lbs pull, will work for most game in the U.S. Remember that with a re-curve there is no let-off like a compound bow. Get higher than 50-65 pounds most people have a real problem with the weight of the pull. Go to a bow shop and try several before you buy.

Q: What brand of comound hunting bow should i get?
I want to buy a used compound bow for deer hunting. i have looked around and these are the brands i have found bows of: 1998 PSE Nova Compound Bow, hoyt redline, Fred Bear- Black Bear. How are these brands? the prices for them are all around 100-150 and most come with extras.what type of bow should i buy with 175.00???? also what else would i need besides a bow in order to go hunting? thanks

A: Those are all good brands, I am not sure how good the models are.

Q: What kind of bow hunting target arrows are best?
I am new to bow hunting and just bought a bear done deal 60# with 28″ draw. What is the best size and weight and kind of arrows to start out with targets?

A: I am not going to tell you which arrow is the “best” for your particular bow/style. You will have to actually use a few different arrow set-ups to find which is best for you…

But whatever you do end up going with for hunting arrows, make sure that your practice arrows are of the same brand, type, weight, length, balance, etc, etc. If you practice with one arrow set-up and hunt with another, your practicing will be for nothing — because the two different arrow set-ups will have very different flight characteristics and will affect your accuracy.

Good luck.

Q: I’m looking to get into to traditional bow hunting, what will I need besides a bow and arrows?
What is all the gear I will need with just archery not clothing or anything I have all of that but what will I need for traditional hunting? I will be getting a Fred Bear grizzly recurve bow.
the bow is a 50# draw weight if that helps any

A: Go natural and use just a quiver.

Q: Bear hunting question?
I got drawn to hunt bear in unit 22 AZ. Do you guys have any tips it’s my first time bear hunting with a bow. What do they eat in the spring. What are some good spots in that unit. What broadheads do I use. How will they act. How should I hunt them
Just to let you know I am not new to bowhunting I’ve shot numerous trophys that are now on my wall it’s just my first time going out for bear

A: I dont want to discourage anyone from bow hunting but if your new to bow hunting then you need to start out with a far less dangerous animal.

I am an experienced hunter yet I have only taken one bear with a bow and I have never attempted such a thing again. One thing I can assure you is that the bear isn’t going down quickly no matter how good your shot placement is and in most states its illegal to carry a side arm during bow season. This means its just you, your bow, and a very pissed off bear.

In order to hunt large predatory animals with a bow there is a number of things you need to not just know.. but experience in real life first hand. I cant possibly tell you everything you need to know and I wouldn’t even attempt too tell you over the internet. Get yourself experience hunting other game such as deer with a bow and go with someone who has been hunting for years to show you the ropes before you step up to hunting large predators with a bow.

Q: How did Fred Bear hunt Kodiak bears, and polar bear with a bow? ?
I never read about him having a dude with a rifle near him.

A: Yes, Fred Bear used guides, and those guides often had a rifle with them — but the rifles were used purely as “backup”, in case the bears attacked or were otherwise a direct danger to life and limb. Fred Bear rarely had to use that backup, and never liked to use it, but he was not an idiot — he took as many precautions as possible. Only a complete idiot would forgo having someone with a good long gun available when only 30 yards away from a teed-off bruin. And a teed-off Kodiak (or Polar Bear) can cover those 30 yards in less than five seconds.

As for how he hunted Kodiaks and Polar Bears with a bow… It’s about the same as hunting moose, caribou or elk with a bow. There’s a lot of tracking and spot-and-stalk that has to be done.

Q: How often should i be getting a new bow?
I seem to buy a new hunting bow every 2 to 1-1/2 years. Is this exsessive, i use my bow for Deer, Bear, Turky, rabbit, and woodchuck hunting, and i shoot constantly. I hardly use guns anymore unless i am goose hunting. I hunt every chance i can during the seasons and i spend 20 to 30 hours a week in the field. How offten do you guys think i should buy a new bow?
Truth is im looking at a new hoyt, and i have only use the bow i have for one season.

A: You know, if money is not a problem, it really boils down to what makes you happy. Buy one every year if you wish to do so. I bought two in one month before. ( I wasn’t pleased with the first one) Life is short- enjoy what you have.

Q: the best hunting bow for stalking/tree stands?
Im starting bow hunting this year and i have narrowed it down to these bows:
Bear lights out, relfex bighorn, and diamond the rock
which bow is the best quality for a beginner and easy on the wallet? I also would rather stalk my game than sit in a tree stand (and if it matters i live in the west).
I will probably be hunting anything from rabbits to maybe elk but mostly blacktail or mule deer. (and some preferances on bows and accesories for antelope would be nice).Thanks.

A: Lights-Out kicks butt.

It is the most compact of the three, has zero limb vibration, is very quiet, comes in realtree camo, and the bare bow is less than $350. The draw weights range from 50-70 lbs, which is plenty strong for Elk.

Q: Can I carry a pistol while bow hunting elk in Colorado?
I am 17 years old and am going archery elk hunting in thick mountain lion and bear country and was wondering if i can legally carry a pistol for self-defense purposes

A: You are too young to carry to start with. Beyond that, whenever you have a question that the answer can make you spend some time in prison, don’t go to yahoo answers to get it. Call the colorado game and fish or whatever it’s called down there and ask someone who actually knows.

Some states prohibit having a firearm while archery hunting, but most do allow it since the prohibition infringes upon constitutional rights. WY for example, now allows you to carry during archery season.

Q: Are Fred Bear White Tail Specials good hunting bows, and what could you compare them to these days ?
And if they are were can I find al of the technical information on the bow. I received this bow as a gift over 20 years ago and it has been uses very little, my best friend bought an expensive PSE setup, so he just handed the Bear to me and said try it out, once you get used to it, you will begin to sincerely enjoy it He gave me all of the assy’s that came with the bow,
A good friend of mine bought himself a new PSE with all the bells and whistles about 20 years ago, so he just gave me his old Fred Bear White Tail Special, I have only owned Re-Curve bows in the past and have never done any hunting with a bow of this caliber, What do you think, is this something you would use for Deer Hunting in Northern California ? Also what would you recommend that I have the bows draw adjusted to ? 50, 60, or 70 lbs ? It’s set for around 65 or 70 right now and it makes it difficult to practice with, what would be a good target shooting draw be ? I can pull the 70 lbs, but it gets tiring and help if you want to practice with the thing, experienced replies only please

A: Personally, I think this must be one hell of a good friend. I would never give a Bear for a PSE. I don’t know about the terrain out there in Cali, but on the other end of the country, 50 lbs is good enough to take a deer with, but if you got a little ways to shoot, then you might want to step it up to 60. You don’t need all the power of a 70 lb unless your after something really big.

Q: What is a good handgun for stopping a black bear?
I will be going going bear hunting in colorado this fall with my bow and would like to bring a suitable sidearm in case of error. . I have a S&W .38 spl, but don’t think thats anywhere near adequate. What would you all recommend for this type of business?

A: Black bears aren’t as big or nasty as some others. A heavy loaded .357 mag with 180 grain solids or soft points would be the minimum I’d use. A .44 Mag with 240 to 300 grain solids or soft points would be better. Check Cor-bon for some great ammo. You don’t want to use hollow points because even though they expand and create more damage they lack the penetration needed to drop a bear, especially a wounded and angry one.

Q: Bear Hunting Tactics?
The one bear I got was pushed up to me during a deer drive. Since I bagged that big guy I have wanted to start bear hunting. I’m really trying to make an effort this year. Our bear season begins Sept. 1st and ends in the middle of november. The property I hunt on has two corn fields. One, below the road, is just up from a brook. The one above the road (where my some kind of cousin has shot ones before) has a mountain above it and a nice ravine funneling up to it. Bear have been taken above and below the road in recent years, and deer move back and forth, so maybe bear do too? I would hunt out of a tree stand. Which would be a better place to sit? Also, should I sit on the field edge or back further into the woods? I would want to be within bow range, but I don’t care if I use my bow or rifle. Are bear like deer in the way that they come out in the morning and at night? Thanks.
By the way, its Black Bear.
My bear was stuffed with corn, and baiting is not legal.

A: You didnt mention where but the basics for bear are the same as deer. In the fall bears want to fatten up for winter. I some areas they hybernate in others they dont. Find the food you’ll find the bears. For instance there is no better teacher than the stomach contents of the bear you all ready got. What was in his stomach ? most likely the same time of year next fall the bears will be eating the same thing. Also rember bears are generally solitary so an area that supports 100 deer might only have a handful of bears. Thats why in the U.S. in non baiting areas most bears are killed by deer hunters who happen to see one just like you.

Q: What should you do to prepare for bear hunting in Canada?
Im 14 and live in Ohio and I want to go black bear hunting with my dad but I was wondering what kind of permits you need and also the age you have to be?

A: you need a hunting licence, a non-resident black bear tag and a firearms licence if your using a rifle, shotgun, or muzzle-loader.

The type of firearms licence you need is a Possession Licence for minors sense your 14, but your not Canadian so I don’t think you can get one. Your dad would have to apply for a Temporary Licence (a) Non-residents’ 6 day possession licence (if borrowing a firearm) OR (b) file a declaration with Revenue Canada Customs (if approved good for 60 days)

Q: Did anyone watch the news about bear hunting in Canada?
Did anyone watch the news last night. It was about the bears in Canada being hunted for their fur. The fur is supplied to Buckingham Palace to make the Guard’s hats!
I am appalled that this is still allowed to continue. A spokes person for the queen say that many alternatives have been tried but nothing could beat the real thing!
What can we do to stop this evil trade in fur (The bears are starting to be hunted for fun!!! FUN?)
Something must be done but what?
Get bent blutone50

A: get in touch with P.E.T.A & Greenpeace

they will give u more info & a better platform

Q: A place to go bear hunting in Ontario Canada?
Hi looking for a good place to go bear hunting in Ontario next sept 2010. I plan on driving from Michigan, can any one recommend a outfitter, thanks.

A: I have used this outfit and was very happy

http://www.budsqueticocountryhunts.com/

I did the cabin bear hunt and the cabin was comfortable and well equipped

Q: Are Bears in Canada dangerous? (Ontario) and Bear Hunting?
Hi, will be in canada for 5 weeks starting August, and will probably be open air/tents sleeping wherever as will be hiring a car to get form forest to forest, just wondered if anyone whose been or is in canada can verify that the chances are I wont even see a bear, let alone get eaten. My friend here in England insists im going to die. Also has anyone been on a bear hunting trip? And is it true they let you keep the hide? ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAARR- cheers guys!

A: I live on a bear migratory trail in NW Ontario. Every year late summer we see bears ever day. I am still alive, never been attacked and I am the better person for learning to respect the beautiful animals in my area.

Are bears dangerous? Sure…and so are itty bitty squirrels and mice. They are wild animals and need to be treated with respect. If you are camping, do not keep food out in the open. Keep it away from where you are sleeping. Even if it is in a cooler, keep it in a car; sealed. Your hot dog to a bear is an easy meal. (fast food if you will)

If you encounter a bear, it depends on what type of attack it is to determine how your react. (any camping park in Canada will have brochures on what types of bears are in their area. Rule of thumb: a “hump” on the back is a grizzly) Don’t run. Give the bear space.

Defensive attack: (black bears)
If you surprise a bear and it responds to defend itself, its young or its food – and contact has been made or is imminent – play dead (lie on your stomach with your legs apart; protect your face, the back of your head and neck with your arms; remain silent; and if wearing a pack, leave it on for protection). Remember: such attacks are rare despite the much more common aggressive displays without contact by black bears. The bear will leave you alone once it believes the threat is passed.

Offensive attack: (black bears)
This is the most serious and potentially deadly attack a black bear might make! It occurs when a bear appears to stalk or follow you for a period of time and then chooses to attack; or the bear attacks you at night. In this situation, playing dead is not appropriate. Try to escape to a secure place such as a vehicle or hard-sided camper. You can climb a tree…but remember bears can climb too.

The two main types of serious attacks are defensive or predatory…

A defensive attack is when the bear is trying to remove a threat.
A predatory attack is when the bear is intent on eating you.
Your initial response to both should be the same… stand your ground!

If you are unable to deter the bear before it physically makes contact, your response to these two types of serious attacks are different…

Defensive attack… play dead!
Predatory attack… fight back!

The links I gave are really good. Just dont be an idiot and try and feed the bears. Some idiots up here did that 2 years ago and wondered why they bear was upset when they ran out food.

Bear spray is ok, but I dont’ think you can come into the country with it. It can also work against you if you are the wrong way in the wind!!

Hunting…there are very strict hunting rules up here. And…to be honest…some idiots have cause a LOT of people to not like hunters because of the lack of respect for everything. Keeping the hide depends on a lot of things. When you register your guns ask the people who can give your the right answers; Dept of Natural Resources in wherever you are. (and keep in mind there are times of year you aren’t able to hunt)

Edit: Incidently, since you are from England…it was a black bear cub named Winnie from Manitoba that started the story of Winnie the Pooh. (Winnie=Winnipeg) Just don’t treat the bears like the one in the story. If you are travelling this way, pop into the Assiniboine Zoo in Winnipeg.

Q: What forms do I need to take a gun into and out of Canada for the purpose of bear hunting? Where do I get?

A: Canadian Firearms Centre
http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca
This site has the info you need

Non-resident firearm declaration forms
1-800-731-4000
Form – CAFC 909 EF

Q: I want to go on a Koala bear hunt in Canada during February?
Can anyone recommend a good place, guide and estimate of the cost of such a trip? It’s no big deal if I have to climb over a wall or cut through some fence in a zoo at midnight I just want a guaranteed kill and someone who will skin it and wrap the meat.

Imagine suggested area: Travel > Canada > General – Canada

A: Koalas are retarded. They are slow, stupid and have genetically evolved a tiny brain that is powered by eucalyptus leaves. Sure they are furry, but if you cuddle them too tight they tend to die. There is no challenge there – look, I just reached out my window then and pushed one off a branch. He didn’t even TRY to hold on. He’s not getting up. Weak.

Q: my boyfriend went to canada to go bear hunting 4 days ago and hes wont call me but will call my best friend?
normally he klingy and has to talk and hangout every day and now wont even text me back WHY??????
well hes not my boyfriend yet we’re talking but normally hes klingy and has to talk and hangout every day andnow he wont even text me back WHY????

A: Well you have to be patient with things like this. Ask your best friend what he has been telling her or him on the phone. If it’s a girl….something could be between them….if he IS cheating on you with your best friend if it’s a girl(i would get a new best friend and completeley forget you ever went out with him…Well hope you get through this well! GOOD LUCK!

Q: Have you hunted bears in Canada? Is there a guide you can recommend?
I’m looking into hunting bears in Manitoba with my dad. We are looking for a reasonably priced hunt (under $2000 US each). If you know of any outfitters in Manitoba or western Onterio that you would recommend or ones that you would avoid, please let me know. Thanks!

A: Larson’s resort in Nestor falls, ON, not far from the manitoba border. They have a bar in their lodge, and getting a bear is almost a sure thing in that neck of the woods. Great fishing too.

Q: Why does America protect the polar bear, while Canada hunts them?
Seems counter productive to me doesn’t it, what say you?

http://www.polarbearhunting.net/

A: because we’ve got more of them then you do…in some regions they are a serious problem

Q: Hunting season dates for Ontario Canada?
I require a list of open season dates on the following in Ont. Canada
Moose; bear; deer; muskrat; beaver. Just a general idea/date when these hunting seasons open. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

A: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/FW/Publication/MNR_E001275P.html
go to the link and it will list the animals you wish to hunt and will give you all the details

Q: Do Inuit of Canada have a right to hunt Polar bears or let the Inuit be puppets to animal activist?
Should Inuit of Canada continue to hunt Polar Bears as in the past? Or, should Inuit bow to the animal rights activist and cease hunting Polar Bears and lose their cultural identity? Inuit cultural genocide or Polar Bear survival more important? This is not to demean the animal rights activists. Just a question or opinion on this sensitive issue.

A: THE LOCALS HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO HARVEST FOOD OK THANKS EDIE

Q: Need as many asnwers as possible!! Polar bear hunting?
I need to finish up this essay today and I need as many answers as you guys can give me because I’m writing an essay about the population of polar bears decreasing and my tweo reasons are 1) Global Warming and 2) Hunting. Global warming isn’t really something I can give my opinion about but hunting is. I think it’s wrong that Canada kills 500 polar bears each year. What do you guys think?
I’m really grateful to anyone who answers this question with their opinion.
THANK YOU!!

A: killing polar bears is awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and its good that you think its wrong:-) i didn’t know they hunted them.:-( those darn canaidians!

Q: where can i get a polar bear tag / license?
i wanted to know where i could get polar bear tag/license? should I hunt them in canada or alaska? how much are polar bear tags/licenses? do you have any good tips for polar bear hunting? what kind of gun should i use for polar bear hunting? how about a .338 bolt-action?
it is legal to hunt polar bear even though they’re endagered.

A: Polar bears are NOT on the endangered species list. There are some provinces in Canada that have permits available to hunt them. The cost is extreme especially considering this little factoid: Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, no part of a polar bear can be imported into the United States, even if the animal was legally harvested in an area with a huntable population.

Q: Should Canada make all bear and wolf killing illegal, except for extreme cases of self-defense?
Many hundreds of wolves and bears are killed each year by hunters and by the government. I find this immoral and disgusting. I say, let nature limit the numbers of these critters, and not hunters and Big Brother.
I find hunting other than for survival immoral and unworthy of enlightened human beings.

A: i agree

Q: Black bear hunting in Maine – outfitter recommendations?
Would like to go black bear hunting in Maine this September, but have never been to Maine, never hunted black bear – any recommendations on good outfitters (and/or preferable regions of Maine)? Any other words of wisdom on black bear hunting also appreciated.

Q: Black Bear hunting help?
I am considering taking a trip from Florida to Georgia for a black bear hunt using this outfitter: http://www.angelfire.com/tn/farner/bear.html

But the thing is I am on a tight budget, do you think 2 days would be enough to bag a black bear from a stand? Or do I need to hunt more days? The way they hunt is still hunt using burn sticks and sow bear urine as an attractant.

Thanks.

A: I learned the hard way on a dream hunt I undertook several years ago. I went to Alaska to hunt Caribou and according to the guide, 4 days was plenty of time. On arrival, the heards had shifted their route and we did not se a single set of horns for the entire 4 days. Luckily I was able to extend the hunt by 3 more days and moved to another location. I bagged a pretty decent ‘bou the next day. My suggestion, plan for 2 or 3 more days on the hunt. that way if you do score early, you can fish etc for the rest of the time and just relax. If not, you have those extra days to hunt.
shoot safe

Q: how and what do i need to start my own hunting guide/outfitter service?
i was wanting to start my own bear hunting with hounds guide service and i need to know how and what all i need

A: Well you have to have a business license, insurance, a big chunk of cash, advertising, all the gear involved, be able to deal with rude clients as in people skills and a high success ratio, for starters.
You also have to have a way to contact emergency medical assistance, be it cell phone or satellite phone, in case a client gets hurt or has an heart attack, CPR training would be a good plan. You will need help; at least one experienced employee and a grunt to pack gear.
You will need to be able to transport the field dressed animal and provide a fast way to have the meat/hide processed.

So figure at least $30,000 to cover all the gear, equipment and other costs to have it together, it cost me and my partner $120,000 to get set up.
You will need an accountant to go over your records for taxes and you must keep good records of everything.

Each state has different laws in regard to being a guide service as well as state and federal lands have different laws also. You will have to do your home work on all this or end up either with a fine or being shut down.

Q: What is better black bear or deer hunting?
castle-creek-outfitters.com

A: If you want to come home with something, deer hunting, since there are a lot of deer compared to the number of bears available for hunting. If you want more meat for you shot, then bear, since they are generally bigger. If you just like sitting in the woods in the cold then either will work just fine.

Q: Have you hunted bears in Canada? Is there a guide you can recommend?
I’m looking into hunting bears in Manitoba with my dad. We are looking for a reasonably priced hunt (under $2000 US each).
Q: Why does Sarah Palin support the aerial hunting of wolves?
There is no good ECOLOGICAL, SCIENTIFIC or FINANCIAL reason to do this. The only reason is because hunters want it to be easier to kill caribou.

Before you say, ‘animal control’ read the article below.

“Wolf controls have been tried in Alaska but without great success; bears, not wolves, were found to be taking the largest share of ungulates. So wolf numbers may, or may not, significantly impact prey numbers in Alaska.

And as Dr. Kenneth Raedeke, a wildlife specialist at the University of Washington observes, “having a brown bear control program, even in Alaska, is not (politically) acceptable.” This gets to the heart of the matter: the nature of political decision-making. The decision to
control wolf populations was made on the basis of political power, not science, economic efficiency or environmental sensitivity. Wolves, apparently, are thought to be politically acceptable targets
while bears are not.

In Alaska, Gov. Walter Hickel [1990-1994] and special-interest groups such as the Alaska Outdoor Council, a coalition of outfitters, hunters and bush pilots, have used the levers of political control over natural
resources to their advantage, regardless of ecological effects. They want to make it easier for hunters to kill moose and caribou by increasing their populations, even though, as the director of Alaska
Division of Wildlife Conservation admits, “there are no real shortages of big-game animals in Alaska.” This is the predictable result of bureaucratic management in a political environment.”

http://www.free-eco.org/articleDisplay.php?id=338

A: Simple – she’s insane. She thinks you shouldn’t have an abortion under any circumstances, even if you have been raped by a member of your own family, yet thinks it is fine to go out and kill a living, breathing animal like a wolf or a bear, just because you get some sort of sick thrill out of killing things. Anyone who thinks like this is clearly unbalanced – the woman belongs in an mental institution.

Q: Mall Scavenger Hunt List?
My sister is having a 12th birthday party at well, the mall. And it’s going to be like… following this: “For my daughter’s thirteenth birthday she had a Mall Scavenger Hunt and a sleepover. We had to make sure that it was a party she would remember, since she was no longer a kid. INVITATIONS: For the invitations, she made Visa Credit cards on the computer, with the guest’s name on the front, and all of the information on the back. She printed it onto gold cardstock (for thicker paper) and got them laminated. She put them into envelopes along with confetti, and mailed them. She invited 7 people, plus her is 8. DECORATIONS: My daughter’s favorite colors – white/grey and black – created the main color scheme. We had streamers and balloons in all of the rooms the girls would be in, along with whited christmas lights. We also bought black and white plates utensils and cups along with a cake that had white and black icing. PARTY: After arrival the girls just hung out for a while and then we drove them over to the mall. My daughter made a list of items that were needed to be bought at the mall pictures to be taken free items to be collected and a Bonus section. She printed out that list along with the rules such as all team members must be in the pictures etc. All girls pulled a bandana out of a bag and went to their teams (we had 2 teams of 4.) Then they decided amongst themselves who would be the captain. The captain received a cheap purse from the dollar store which held $40, a camera, the list my daughter had made, and the rules. The they had 1 1/2 hours to buy items (such as a stuffed animal or a brown hair accessory), take pictures (such as modeling designer handbags and wearing green lipstick), and collect free items (such as a business card or napkin). Each of these things were worth a certain amount of points – Purchases = 3 pts each; Pictures = 2 pts each; Free Items = 1 pt each. We also gave them about 1 1/2 hours to shop for themselves if they weren’t tired. The girls came home for pizza, cake, and opening of presents. While they were doing this my husband got the photos developed so we could tally up points. The winning team got to pick a bag first. In the bag were the items that the teams had bought. After those were all gone, the girls made t-shirts. We gave them each a white t-shirt and set out scissors, tacky glue, a stapler, fabric markers, glitter glue, and extra multi-colored fabric. Then after 30 minutes, they voted on their favorites. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places got a crown and a huge lollipop. Then the girls had free time and they all went outside to play kick the can. Then they came in at about 10:00 for movies. Downstairs we had set up a snack bar with popcorn soda and boxes of candy. The girls watched a few chick flicks them stayed up until about three talking and listening to music. In the morning, I made homemade waffles and let them add syrup powdered sugar fruit and whipped cream. They LOVED them. Then the girls played around outside until their parents came at 10:30. We gave the girls their goody bags then finally got our rest. GOODYBAGS: For goody bags we gave out – along with the picture frames and scavenger hunt items – a lot of candy and 2 kingsized candy bars. My daughter and all of her friends absolutely loved this party and my daughter doesn’t stop talking about it! I would strongly recommend it to anyone throwing their daughter a 13th birthday party. I hope this helps with your party!” That was from a site and we’ll be following it. >< The stores at the mall are:
