Q: compound bow?
I bought a Hoyt pro vantage compound bow over the summer and it came with a tattered string. I’m lost as to where to purchase a string for it, or what kind to buy. I plan on using it for this upcoming deer season if that matters. bass pro says it will cost about $10 dollars to put it on but i will need to supply the string.

any help would be appreciated

A: Call Hoyt (801) 363-2990 or Cabela’s. You will probably not find what you want on either of their websites. Hoyt can tell you what kind of string it is, and they may be able to sell you a replacement. Otherwise, Cabela’s can probably find it for you if you call their customer service department even if they don’t carry the bow.

Q: Compound Bow?
I am in the market for a New Compound Bow (No price Limit), Any Suggestions?

A: You are the only person your trying to satisfy, so forget about the brands, and start shooting. Go to an archery shop and shoot every bow you can get your hands on…..then you decide. There are plenty of quality bows on the market. You should expect to pay $400-$1000 range, that includes accessories.

Q: Compound bow.?
If i were to get a compound bow what kind sould i get. Are they hard to use. I have shot one before but i dont really remeber. my neighbor can help me he has one.

Are they any good

A: If I were you, a good entry level bow are some of the PSE bows. Nova, Durango, Deer Hunter etc. When I decided on a bow, I shot many different ones at an outfitter.
When you shoot these yourself, you will notice definte likes and dislikes. When you draw back, notice smoothness in the cams without graininess and the release should be the same. I prefer the PSE’s just for this reason. They are smooth! This means less distraction, and you can concentrate on your technique, form and accuracy with each shot.
After you have chosen the right bow for you, practice, practice, you might want to shoot with someone who can teach you proper stance and form so you can be consistant each time. That’s what causes 90% of people to stop hunting or using a bow, they can’t keep a constant form to stay accurate.
Hope that helps.

Q: Can a compound bow be shot without using an arrow release?
I’m planning on buying my own bow soon. But I was having trouble deciding between a recurve bow or compound bow. For the Compound Bow, is it possible to shoot an arrow without using a arrow release? (can I shoot a arrow with a compound bow just like how I shoot an arrow with a recurve?)

A: Yes you can. I used a finger tab for over 30 years shooting a compound bow.In the beginning it worked out great. But as the compound bows got shorter, faster, with lower and lower brace heights they became less and less forgiving. It became almost impossible even with a bow tuned to perfection to shoot a broadhead at a deer and hit the spot you were aiming at under hunting conditions. I finally went to a release 3 years ago and the accuracy problem with the broadheads completely went away. But if your goal is just to target practice with field points as you stand on the ground the release is not necessary. But if your goal is to bow hunt if you get a compound get a release for it before you even leave the archery shop.

Q: What is a good 32 inch draw compound hunting bow?
I need a compound hunting bow, but I have long arms that measure to a 32 inch draw, thus making finding a good compound bow very difficult.

I don’t have alot of money, so the cheaper the better. What is a good and cheap 32 inch draw compound hunting bow?

A: the closest i found to a 32 inch draw length is a ross carnivore 34 from bass pro shops which has a 31 inch draw length

Q: Is it legal to own a compound bow at age 12 without a license?
Ok. So im planning on buying a compound bow for my son because he really wants one. First We Live in New York. Second we need to know if you need a license for it. But he isnt going to kill anything he is just going to shoot foam targets.

A: its perfectly legal, im 13 and i have owned a compound bow since i was 12, owned it with out a license. I have also hunted with it. And a responsible law abiding citizen gifted it to me for no reason. It was his old bow. I oonly recommend that you buy one that he will be able to draw and shoot comfortably. DOnt forget a realease and arm guard……The relase is more accurate than fingers.

I live in P.A. Too, philadelphia, and i was hunting on a farm, people from the pgc were there checking the land and they siad nothing to me, and they saw me in my stand, alone

Q: What arrows should i use for my compound bow?
I got a PSE silverhawk compound bow, and i have no idea what type of arrows to buy.

A: Go to Bass Pro…D

Q: Can you shoot a compound bow without using a sights?
I am a HUGE fan of archery, but have never shot a compound bow before. I think that release aids and sights completly kill the whole idea of archery, so I was wondering if you can use a compound bow without using sights, just sit the arrow on my finger?
Thanks.

A: You absolutely can. The only difference you’ll see is actually getting a let-off at full draw length and not tiring out as fast.

Q: What size of compound bow would be good for me to start with?
I have a couple of years of archery and really enjoyed it. I am looking into getting a compound bow. I just don’t know how many lbs draw back I should get. I’m on 5′3 not sure that matters. I only plan on doing target shooting. Please send me any other information that I might need to know before I buy a bow. I’m looking at buying online. Oh yeh I’m also left handed. lol

A: A big factor is your age. If you are young you will want something with a good range of adjustment so as you grow you can change the bow to fit you. If you are 5′3” I would probably go with a 40-50#. To find your draw length you can take your arm span and divide it by 2.5 to get an estimate of your draw length. In a question I answered last week someone told me that this method is not accurate, I beg to differ. I have used this method to set up many bows and it is correct 99.9% of the time. If you are older and are done with major growing then you don’t really need to be worried with adjustment ability.

Q: What is a great Recurve/Compound bow to learn with?
I am interested in learning archery, not so much for hunting as for sharp shooting. Seeing as I am completely new to this field, I have no idea what reputable brands are, whether I should pick a recurve or a compound bow, and once I’ve decided that, how to pick the right model for me (height, pounds). Any advice?

A: For a beginner I always like recurve better than compound. You can go from recurve to compound with no problem but the reverse is not always true. Although, Brady Ellison started with a compound and now on his way to the Beijing Olympics. But he’s an exception to the rule.

Another thing to factor in is, what are your aspirations? Do you want to perhaps go to the Olympics one day? If so, then your only option is to go recurve, there’s no compound in the Olympics. As for there are more competition in recurve, this is not really true. There are just as much competition in compound if not more. Specially here in the US, more people shoot compound than recurve, during tournaments even on the NAA side of things, there are as many compound shooters as recurvers. NFAA is bound to have a lot more compound than recurvers.

Now bow brands, for recurve, Win&Win/KAP, Samick, Hoyt are all good brands. Compound you have Matthews, Hoyt, PSE, Bowtech etc. There are 2 schools of thoughts on this. You can buy a beginner bow and test out the water, see if archery is for you, if it is you upgrade to get the best model if not you sell it. Or you can go all out and buy the best model and it’ll stay with you forever, if it doesn’t work out the best model will fetch better resale value. It’s all up to you.

As others say, find a club near you. If you’re in the US go to www.usarchery.org. Under Directory Search you can do search by state. Some club will also offer equipment for you to use, this way you can also test the water, see if you’re into it.

The length of the bow depends on your drawlength, the weight though, if you start with recurve, it doesn’t matter how strong you are I always like to start people with very light bows 20# and under. It might feel like nothing to you, but when you start using the proper muscles, it’ll begin to feel like a lot of weight. You see, in day to day activity you rarely use the proper archery muscles. Most people don’t even know those muscles exist, somewhat akin to wiggling your ears. This is specially important if you want to do target shooting as you said. Start too heavy and you’ll be pulling with your arms and shoulder, the parts that are strong. Although they’re strong they’re not meant for the fine movements required in target shooting. So pulling with them will result in large jerky motions. Good luck, and welcome to the wonderful world of archery.

Q: Can a peep sight be installed on a compound bow string without a bow press? How do you find the right spot?
I have a PSE X Force compound bow, and I want to install a peep sight on the string. I have two questions: 1. Can I install the peep without a bow press? 2. If yes, how do I know the right spot to put it? I can’t imagine the peep being an easy item to move up and down the string, so I want to get it right the first time.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

A: No, you can take a butter knife and use it to separate the individual strands on your string. Just slip the aperture into the string and make sure that you have an equal number of strands on each side of it. You will be able to slide it up or down to make it fit your needs before you affix it permanently. You won’t really need a vise.

Q: What kind of Compound Bow should I buy when I’m learning to shoot with a Bow I have shot a Fred Bear long bow?
in the past but want to get started shooting compound bows & want to know what a good bow to start with would be.

A: I would not sink a lot of money into the first bow justin case you don’t like it, I shoot a Mathews and would tell anyone it is the best bow on the market and I have shot PSE, Hoyt, Bear, ect, ect. I use them for both hunting and tournament. I own 7 or 8 bows and I guess the main thing I can tell you is how much do you wanna drop in one? The Mathews can run around 1200 by the time it is all set up.

Q: How much does a compound bow go for?
I have a compound bow that i haven’t used in awhile and its a Darton 20NX. I want to sell it but i can’t quite find it on any websites. Can anyone help me?

A: On e-bay they have one listed for $73 and one for $24.99. Evidently it isn’t a collectors item.

Q: what is the world record for longest shot with a compound bow?
Not a crossbow, not a composite bow, not a recursive bow, only interested in the World Record for the Compound Bow.

The one with the pulleys.

the compound flight bow record seems to be around 1.2km by Kevin STROTHER, USA in 1992

I guess these are the ‘official’ records. Anything known outside officialdom?? I’ve heard claims up to 1.8km for footbows.

Q: What poundage of a compound bow will penetrate a deer?
I was wondering what poundage of a compound bow will penetrate a Vermont deer.

A: In my state of Louisiana, the minimum draw weight of 30 lbs is legal. Deer have been killed with this amount of draw weight, with a well placed shot-just behind the front shoulder,in the heart-lung area. With a low poundage bow, you will need to shoot a sharp two blade broad head like the magnus stinger, and choose your shot well. Good luck!

Q: Compound Bows?
My dad recently told me that he would be getting a Diamond Black Ice, here is the link; http://www.diamondarchery.com/black_ice.php
When he told me that, it made me want to get a new bow. I’ve been told by my dad that I’ve been a natural when it comes to archery. The last compound bow I shot was a youth bow. I’ve also shot with a recurve. I’ve never archery hunted, but I would like to get into that. So my question is:
I’m looking for a new compound bow that could compare to the Black Ice. I don’t care about brand names, because I really don’t know any. So any ideas for a descent compound bow?
Thanks.

A: There are many brands out there Mathews, Hoyt, Browning, PSE, Bear, and many more. New technology has some shooting really quick and flat. I shoot an older bear, and I am used to it, sure I would love to have one of the newer models Mathews or whatever, but I just can’t force $800.00 out of my wallet.
The Black Ice looks like a good bow, and it might be a little cheaper than the Mathews hottest bow.

Q: What does the small plastic circular piece at the top and bottom of my compound bows cable do? ?
I am referring to the quarter sized piece of black plastic the the cables looped ends connects to. It has multiple notches of different length that you can adjust. How does this effect the bows performance? What exactly is this adjusting? It is an older model Jennings compound bow, somewhere from the early 90’s I would guess.

A: It’s called a yoke, and you can adujust the draw length with it.I keeps the bow cams free of torque, also.Back in it’s day, it was high tech stuff.I had a Martin cougar that had it, and being a finger shooter at the time, it was and still to this day, the most accurate finger shooting bow I have ever owned. But, it’s overall length may have contributed to that fact also.

Q: What compound bow should i get? And have you tried this bows out?
Hello i trying to decide on a bow to get and need some ideas. Im 25 yrs old, shorter guy and not that strong so i was looking at bass pro shops Bear Archery Odyssey II set and the Diamond Edge compound bows but i was just wondering whatever body else thought and if you have either one of this? I would like to stay under 400 bucks and these are both priced at 299. So anybody have any good thoughts? Thanks alot.

A: if you go to your local archery shop they will help you find a bow that will b perfect

Q: compound bows??????????
would my 45lb compund bow be able to kill deer and kangaroos

A: 45 lbs. is plenty to kill a deer, and since a Kangaroo is roughly the same size, it will suffice for them as well.

Here in the US, each state sets its own legal limits for archery equipment, and the recent trend has been to reduce the required poundage of bows. With the continuing improvements in compound bows, they are driving arrows at higher speeds than they used to, and you can reach a good arrow speed with 10 lbs less than it used to take. As an example, Minnesota dropped their required draw weight from 40 lbs. to 30 lbs. last year.

Take your time and aim well, and the arrow will pass through the animal entirely with 45 lbs.

Q: Is Diamond a good brand for Compound Bows?
New to achery and wondering if this is a pretty good brand for hunting compound bows.

A: yes diamond are the last year bowtech models just re named

Q: which manufacturer of compound bows do you prefer?
i am in the market for a good compound bow. i dont need the best out there, but i need a good one. i can afford to spend nearly $400 on a bow. what brands should i consider?
i only know of these brands: matthews, bowtech, hoyt, bear and PSE. are there any other good bows out there?

A: Now a days you really can’t buy a ”bad” bow.The brands you mentioned are are good. With only $400 you will have to probably go to a ‘’store brand” or a manufacturers 2nd line which are all good. Mission(Matthews),Diamond (Bowtech),Bass pro (Hoyt or Diamond) Gander Mt.(Diamond) or a lesser know brand which is still good.
Best thing I can say is to try before you buy to see which one ”feels right” for you.

Q: Which company makes a good quality compound bows?
I am trying to decide on what brand of compound and still is good in quality and at a low, reasonable price and why you think so. Such as Mathews, PSE, Hoyt, ect. Thanks for your help. Ohh and just want something that is a good target and hunting (for deer). Thanks again.

A: Here are the bows that I consider to be the absolute best in quality and customer satisfaction.
1st place- Hoyt and Matthers- tied
2nd place Bow Tech.
3rd place- Darton
4th place- PSE
5th place- Martin
6th place- Bear
Good luck with your bow!

Q: What are some good things about old compound bows?
I am hesitant to buy an old Hoyt ProVantage as my next bow. Its long, and dose’nt have cams. If anyone has one, could you tell me how it shoots and how quiet it is? Are cams realy neccasary for a good compund bow, and is there any good things about having a long axel to axel in a hunting situation?

A: Hoyt makes some top quality gear over the years, and the pro-Vantage was a good one. However the bow in question was made back in the 80s and for a compound bow in my opinion that is old. Too old to take a risk at drawing it and being subject to limb delamination For a collector it’s ok but for using it for everyday use I would not partake. As far as your other questions go, bow technology has vastly improved since Hoyt built that bow and asking if cams are really necessary is like wanting a hot fudge sunday without the hot fudge. Cams have made it possible to shoot lighter bows at hotter speeds then ever before. I don’t think that bows that are older then 20 years of age qualify for traditional style yet. Here is an interesting link on a bit of history of that bow.

http://www.cartertown.com/rambobows.htm

Q: what is mean’t by letoff on compound bows?
I’m just getting into compound bows and i read in ads about letoff percentages, what does it mean?

A: Letoff is the percentage of the bows peak pull weight that you don’t have to hold against at full draw. Somehow the cam design allows it to roll over and your 60lb peak pull only requires, with a 65% let off for example: 21 pounds of pull weight to hold it back once you have fully drawn the bow. This helps greatly as the longer you have to hold any weight drawn back the more your muscles will tire & start to quiver or twitch. Most hunters couldn’t shoot a bow without let off accurately unless they practiced every week from a young age like the English archers of old.

Q: How good are Jennings compound bows compared to the others?

A: apples and oranges dude, I prefer PSE what prise range what model?

Q: What are the wheels on compound bows?
I’m looking to buy a bow. But I was wondering, what are the wheeling on the tips?
I was actually looking at one that like…Indians used like primitive. But saw these are was wondering!

A: theyre called ‘cams’ they make it easy to hold the bow back once youve drawn it. long bows or recurve bows make you hold the full weight the whole time and are more challenging to aim and use in all matters. I use a compound. Go with matthews theyre the best.

Q: Where can I buy good used compound bows in Washington DC. Hoping they are not tooo expensive. Any suggestions?
Trying to purchase a compund bow without trying to spend alot of money. I live in Washington DC, any suggestions?

A: look at the bass pro shop in hanover md. if they are too expensive look on ebay

Q: What are the laws in Canada concerning compound bows?
I’m selling a compound bow on ebay, and despite the fact that I listed in the auction that I will NOT ship outside of the United States, an ebay member in Canada bid on it, so my question is is it legal to ship a compound bow into Canada? I do not know the weapon laws in Canada.

A: As long as the bow cannot be fired with one hand it is not considered a firearm and therefore perfectly legal to ship to Canada.

Q: where can i sell two used compound bows in east tennessee. One PSE and one Pearson ZB2?
I have two compound bows, one PSE and one Pearson ZB2 compound bows. I would like to know where I could sell them for a fair price in a 50-60 mile radious of sweetwater or knoxville tenn.
looking for a place other than ebay to sell two used compound bows, one PSE and one Pearson ZB2 in east tennessee

A: If you don’t mind using the mail/UPS you can probable make more money on them, by selling them on line…The buyer pays shipping, so you should come out on top…It’s cheaper than advertising in the classifieds, and you get a much wider/targeted audience..

http://www.gunbroker.com
http://www.gunsamerica.com

Yes, you can sell your bows on those “gun” sites…

Q: Most technologically advanced material for compound bows and arrows?
I’m writing a bio for my archer superhero Roving mask and I need to know the what the most advanced material for bow and arrows are (stuff still in prototype or not available to the general public counts )

thanks for any help

A: I’d say carbon or carbon fiber are pretty useful in this area… they are strong yet flexible. I’ll do a little research for you though just to make sure.

yep pretty much a compound bow with carbon fiber arrows.

Q: does anyone know anything about “blue mountain archery” compound bows?I cant find any info. on this bowcompany?
my dad got me a used compound bow made by blue mountain archery ,it is bright purple which makes me think it may have been made for competition target shooting.I cant find any info. on this company.Thank you for any help!

A: they were really popular in the mid to late 90’s with the Wolverine model bow. It had a machined riser and dual hatchet cams. It was a 300fps+ bow for $350. Really a great bow and you will see one on ebay every once in a while. I had one with rollerbrink cams on it for 3-D and it was a shooter. They were great hunting and competition bows. Good luck.

Q: Can I take a archery compound bow with arrows to Mexico?
I know that guns and ammunition is prohibited without authorization in Mexico. I wish to take my compound bow and practice in the mountains in Mexico. I am a dual citizen. Will the soldiers take it from me since alot of drug activity killings are happening in Mexico?

A: Do not wait until you get to the border to ask.

Call your local Consulado de Mexico.

Q: Need some information on compound archery bows.?
I won a Hoyt Defiant compund bow a few weeks ago. The bow is used but is in perfect condition. I am not in to archery but am thinking about it now that I have this equipment. ( It also came with==
Hoyt 6 arrow 2 pcs quiver
Hoyt Stabalizer
Hoyt Sight
Whisker Biscuit Arrow Rest
Peep Sight
Wrist Sling
5 – 2413 easton superlite arrows)

So, I do not plan on hunting anytime but am not ruling it out completely. Is this a good bow for a beginner or should I try and sell it and buy a different one. What is this bow worth with or with out all the extras? What is this bow designed for? Thanks

A: that is a good bow for hunting and beginners, go to a pro shop and have your draw weight and length adjusted for you, whisker biscuit is great for beginner bow hunters, i would say you have a 500-600 dollar bow, which is good to start with, make sure u sight it in to your dominant eye.

Q: Archery: Compound Bow, what are the pros and cons of a whiskerbiscuit rest? Will it slow my arrow?
I have recently purchased a new Hoyt. After shooting the bow for a few weeks, I’ve noticed some wear on my current rest (it seems my fletching is clipping the rest on my release). I tried grinding it down, but I still have no confidence in my shot. I’ve heard that a whiskerbiscuit would be worth my money, but I’d like some more information on them. Will is slow down my shot? Are they difficult to install? Thanks!

A: it provides more stability for your arrow and it is much quieter and it will not slow your arrow

Q: I just took a introductory archery class, and bought a compound bow online. How do I take care of it?
I just got a bow online since im thinking about getting into archery. I thought that it would be easy, but as Im reading theres more and more info. I also cant find what bow I have, and the weight tag is missing.

I have a bear compound bow, and says Black/Mag in small letters on the side. I looked on the website, and theres nothing similar. The serial is BM-15776. The weight pull is high, the guy said it was 50-60, but I would like to reduce it. Is it possible to reduce it down to 25 or less? My girlfriend will be using the bow also, so this draw is MUCH too heavy for her. We used a 10 pound draw during the intro class.

Im only looking to shoot it for fun at targets, no hunting at all. I also read that you need heavy enough arrows so the bow wont get damaged. How do I find out? What kind of bow do I have?

Thanks for any responses

A: my wife actualy shoots 50 lbs. there is no way to reduce this perticular bow beond that, because lower weight limbs are not made for it. you may want to look for your girlfriend a bow of her own, the draw length for you and her is probably different. most women/youth compounds run from about 30 -50 lb draw.most have adjustable draw lenght.so it can be fit perfectly to her.as far as arrows are concerend you are correct, too light of arrow can harm your bow. to heavy will cause preformance problems. with most carbon arrows they are labeled with draw weight now such as 55-75 which would work from 55 lb to 75 lbs. check out bass pro and cabelas. both websites have a shaft selection chart when ordering arrows that helps you choose the right shaft for you. if you are interested in a bow you can both shoot check out the mathews genesis bows the regular genesis goes from 10 to 20 lbs and 18 to 30 in draw lenght and allows anyone to shoot the same bow with no adjustment to lenght, i bought my daughter the genesis pro. it is 15 to 25 lb and has draw stop adjustment from 18 to 30 inches,, she is 8 yrs old and shoots it great.. or dad can pick it up and play a little.as far as care i use sting wax on my string. i wipe down metal parts with break free clp to protect from rust and keep it in a hard protective case to keep scratches off my bow. since you are a beginner you realy should visit an archery pro shop to let them help you with selection of bows arrows and accessories have fun with your new archery interest.

Q: On a Archery Compound bow, what is the “brace height”?
for example: the brace height on my bow is 8.75 inches..

A: The distance between the back of the bow grip to the string- on a compound bow, this distance does not change. You have a bow that is very forgiving, although a little slower in speed then a bow with a short brace height. But this is a fact- speed doesn’t kill, accuracy kills. Your bow will be more accurate, all other factors being equal.

Q: Those of you who shoot archery do you prefer to shoot a compound bow or a traditional bow?
Those of you who shoot copound bows what is your favorite brand. Those who shoot traditional bows what do you prefer? Recurves or Longbows?

A: I work at a boy scout camp and I love archery, so here’s my take.
Compound is best for hunting or range work. If you aren’t very strong then this may be the bow for you because on a 75lbs bow you are only holding 25 with your arm. The other 50 is in the mechanical leverage in the bow. This bow is the most difficult to maintain and the most expensive.

Recurves are very beautifully and shoot very well. They are like a middle ground between compound and long. A skilled archer can hit all most anything at a distance with this bow.

The Long bow is by far my favorite! they shoot very well and easy to work. They are also the cheapest of the lot. While much larger than the comp or Recurve Thy shoot very well, how ever some of you liter people my have to watch out because these are hard to string and to shoot.

Brand doesn’t seem to matter but what does matter is the material that it is made out of. Wood is good but it needs to be a strong but flexible. Fiber glass is O.K.but you would have to research the stuff they are using. Carbon fiber is strong and lite but it is expensive so watch out.
Peace

Q: are there any repair parts for a bear archery brown bear compound bow?

A: Go to the nearest archery shop that handles Bear equipment. They will have the answer to you query. They can call Bear and find out, if they don’t know. your question brings back memories. The Brown Bear was my first compound bow.I killed several deer with it.The bow has round wheels and a 50 lb pull.I still have it in my collection of bows. It taught me a lot about Bowhunting deer. I could get a good broadside hit in the lung-heart area and the arrow would get a total pass through and stick up in the ground. If I made a bad shot and hit bone, there were some deer that would take several jumps and shake like a dog, and the arrow would fall to the ground. No penetration, no blood, just a little meat on the broadhead, and the deer would live another day. Thanks for bringing back the memories. I hope you get it fixed.

Q: I would like to take up traditional archery(the kind w/ out a compound bow) any tips?
In terms of Equipment, how to choose it, form, where to practice, any laws, etc.

A: So you want to take up Traditional Archery…. Well, “traditional” means many things in the world of Archery. Let’s just go with the basics….

First, you need to decide whether you want to use a recurved bow or a longbow; recurved bows are the ones with the limb tips which are curved away from you as you use the bow. Since “traditional” bows do not have “let-off”, you will be holding all of the draw weight at full draw; if the bow is “40 lbs”, you will have to be able to hold the string back with 40 lbs of force (there are a few exceptions to this, but those bows are generally considered “exotic”).

Then you need to decide what kind of arrows you want to use; the choices are wood, aluminum, and carbon-fiber (as long as the bow is “traditional”, you can use any kind of arrow you want). There is also a choice of fletching for the arrows, but “traditional” normally means feather fletching. Of utmost importance, though, is that your arrows must be made specifically for your bow and yourself: they have to be strong (and flexible) enough for the bow’s draw weight at your draw length AND be long enough for your draw length AND be heavy enough to efficiently use the bow’s energy without being too heavy for practical use.

“Traditional” most often means using a glove or tab, as well. The glove normally covers only the tips of the first three fingers of the “string hand” (the one used to pull the string back); the tab is normally a piece of leather which acts as a pad between the string and fingers, and is “split” so the arrow nock can be placed between the first and second fingers. As with choosing a bow and type of arrows, choosing whether to use a glove or a tab is up to you.

“Form” is easy enough to learn, if you are patient enough to not constantly change the way you do things. The good part is that you have some lee-way in how you actually do those things — as long as you are consistent in doing them. If you feel that one thing you are doing is not working out, change it a little…but give it a couple of weeks to settle in before deciding that it still doesn’t work.

Practice can be done in a basement or garage, if there is room for it. I happen to have a small outdoor range just off my driveway. Look in your local phone book for archery stores; many of them have indoor ranges.

Laws happen to change, sometimes frequently, and they are not always the same from one area to another, so you need to check with your local law enforcement and/or government agencies; what is legal in one town may not be in another town — even though they are in the same county.

I hope this helps. If you have questions that need answers, I will do what I can to give you the answers you need.

Q: I would like to get into archery. What is a good compound bow? Hoyt?
I would like to get a high quality bow with alot of power. Also where is a good website etc to learn the equipment? Thanks!

A: try traditional archery its so much more fun and its much more of a personal challenge but compounds are for people tht dont want to practice and are to lazy to go out every day and shoot

Q: Archery question- Compound Bow?
I am a newbie to archery and I tried to change my draw weight to something lower as 60 lb draw weight is a little much for me. I turned the both bolts about one full turn counter clockwise to loosen it. Now I see there is a little space there? is it suppose to be like that. I dont want my bow to fall apart on me.

Pic of space on bow :

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll227/jvee86/hwdjwh.jpg

A: So, assuming for a moment that your bow was close to full draw weight at 60 pounds, then yep, that’s normal. If you still have the manual for your bow it will actually tell you how many turns you can take it down.

Depending on how you got your bow (mail order vs. through a shop) it may be worth taking it to a shop that will let you shoot it through paper to see if it is still tillered correctly. (meaning the top and bottom limbs are pulling on the arrow the same) It isn’t a big deal if they are a little out of a adjustment, it just makes the arrow wobble in the air. It does effect accuracy and speed some as well, but it’s not that sensitive.

If you bought the bow in a decent archery shop they should have tuned it for you, so as long as you do the same number of turns top and bottom you’ll be fine.

Q: A diverse COMPOUND BOW? ARCHERY?
not a high power hunting bow or a fancy precision target bow but something more diverse. Also i’m a fairly new archer (only 30#) and i want it to last a while so quite adjustable.
alot about archery poundage is how long you’ve been doing it. some 10 year olds can use 60# bows cuz they’ve been doing it for years. Im 16 and ive only recently started. Archery rules, airsoft is lazy so please dont post annoying thing just for points.
16 is hardly little. im over 6ft. have you ever seen a 16 year old?
actually something makes me feel youre not much older. if you were i think its time you got out of airsoft… try a real gun

A: whether or not this person is a kid or not they deserve a legitimate answer.
Right now the market is flooded with quality and competitive bows. The genesis, that was mentioned earlier, is a great starter bow but can not be used for hunting. The best feature of that bow is it can be used by anyone, no set draw length and is a great teaching tool.
I would recommend the Razors Edge by Diamond, due to the flexibility in draw lengths and poundage. Most bows only come in 10 lbs increments and if you are only pulling 30 right now, by the time you get to the 40lbs (required for hunting) you might have to buy another bow just to get better performance. The Razors Edge has a 19-29″ draw length and a 15-60pounds with two different let-offs. This bow has a high resale value as well. Good luck!

Q: how to change draw length on a bear whitetail compound bow? I want to make it shorter?
It is fairly new and i want to know if it can be done. If so, please tell me how to make it shorter. thanks.

A: The tiller wheels of the bow has notches in the wheels for draw length adjustment. There should be three positions on each wheel for the draw length. On the newer bows, the adjustments are made on the lower wheel. You may need a bow press to help you make the draw adjustments. The axle bolts are used to adjust the draw weights. You can adjust the weight to a lesser poundage to make it easier for use in the bow press.

Q: How to make my compound bow better?
i have an old bear compound bow and want to improve it because i can’t afford a new bow and i tried to find a used one but couldn’t find one to meet my qualifications so what can i add to make make it better for hunting.

it has no sights, well nothing really except the bow and a quiver.

my limit is 100.00

links would be nice, too

A: I would think you need a few things. A good arrow rest to start you can get a good one pretty cheap. Sights would be next I use one with two pins on it, again prices vary and you want one that you can see good. A peep sight in the string is only a few bucks. I think a release is a good way to go also, this is most likely going to cost the most. I would look at any stores in the area. Bass pro, Cableas, Dicks sporting goods any place that has archery stuff. E-bay has some good deals on used archery stuff. I think you can get it done for 100.00 bucks but it might cost a little bit more.

Q: I am looking at compound bow for a cheap price but good quality. what is it?
I like every form of hunting and I have 2 bear compound bows one is a youth and the other is junk what should i buy that is good and around 300 dollars?

A: Mathews or Hoyt.

Q: bear compound bow parts?
I am in need of the insert for my arrow rest. It is the same as for the stabilizer insert. fits most all bows. It has 5/16-24 threads. I can’t shoot the bow with out this piece. Any idea where i can get one?

HELP ME PLEASE SOMEONE. i can not find it local.
Thank you for reading this.
after call after call & allot of running around, i found it !! Doc’s archery and there where great.
thanks everyone..

A: Make some telephone calls to all the archery shops close to you. Any of them should have a few of these in drawer somewhere. And since it is an almost universal part, the shops you call doesn’t even have to carry bear bows in order to have one that will fit it. In a worst case scenario you may want to take out the stabilizer insert and use it for your arrow rest until you can locate another one. The rest is more important then the stabilizer. Good luck!

Q: how much is a (left-handed grip) Brown Bear double-compound bow worth?
It belonged to my father and want to know how much to sell it for, since I’m not left-handed.
It is in absolutly, mint condition with very little use. It also has adjustable sights on it.

A: Check EBAY.

Q: i have a fred bear lights out compound bow and i was wondering since I want a string tamer which i’d have to?
buy the front mount string tamer this means id have to get rid of the stablelizer and just use the tamer as a stablelizer and is that ok?

A: It should work ok. I have shot for years with out a stabilizer at all (I do have one now, can’t really tell that it helps). Just practice with your new set up and you should be ok.

Q: I am hesitating between buying a Bear Lights Out compound Bow or a Martin Saber. What should I choose?

A: Bear Lights Out is considered one of the best bows for the price that is available. I have not researched or heard anything about the Martin Saber.

Q: I would like any information on my Bear Blue Denim Compound Bow?

Q: I want to buy a compound bow and thinking of a Fred Bear Lights Out RTS. Good Choice?
I have a budget of about $600 for a ready to shoot bow!

A: yes fb

Q: Is the Bear Showdown a good compound bow?
if i bought it i would be shooting it alot. can you adjust the draw length? If the peak weight was 60, could it go down to 50?

A: Anything bear makes is good, the Showdown ia a model from last year so you could probably get it at a discount. The bow is similar to the bear element and is adjustable. If you already have it take it to a bow shop and they will adjust it properly for you and tune it. Draw length is only slightly adjustable as with the draw weight.

Q: Does anyone know anything about HOYT Oasis compound bow?
I traded my recurve for a hoyt oasis compound bow. Does anyone know anything about them. Like how much they were worth new and how much they are worth now. What is the fps on the arrow for a 60 pound draw. Its a pretty compound i was just wanting some info on them. I heard they were good.

A: Click link below you’ll love it. I own 7 Bows Hoyt and Bear are my best for hunting.

Q: what length bowstring do i need for a 15-20 yr old Hoyt Spectra Mako compound bow?
The specs are worn off the sticker, and neither i nor my hunting-supply guy seem to be able to find info on it…

A: Find yourself an Archery Shop close to home and take your bow with you. They will fix you up in short order.

Q: I have a Hoyt Eclipse compound bow with a 29″ draw + or – 1 inch. Can I drop the draw length below 28″?
I was wanting to know if I can buy modules to adjust the draw length like newer compound bows.

A: i think your bow can be dropped to a lower draw length if im not mistaken, on your cams there should be some adjustment pins move those pins further back that should take the draw lenght to 27

Q: hoyt laser tech compound bow?
does anybody have one of these and do you like it

A: gander mountain

Q: Which compound bow is better Matthews or Hoyt?

A: I own both brands and they are both great bows. But if the Matthews is dry fired the odds are the bow will suffer a lot of damage. The Hoyt can be dry fired without harming the bow. For that reason alone, since they are about equal in all other aspects, I would recommend the Hoyt .The Hoyt Alpha Max in particular. But you can’t go wrong with either bow, it’s just that the Matthews is not quite as durable.

Q: Finger tab or release aid for my old compound bow?
My compound bow is a hoyt provantage. should i use a release aid or finger tab? it has a low let off. I would be using a whisker biscuit arrow rest.

A: Low let off? – Then don’t complicate things with a release aid.
They’re for either very heavy bows, or archers with poor skills,
and they represent another small item to get tangled up with,
lose, or have malfunction.
If you can’t get a good consistant release with a light let off,
then practice.
You can get ‘glove type’ tabs that stay where they belong.

Q: Should I get a hoyt bow or a PSE??
I’m looking at getting a Hoyt compound 40-65# bow (used) for 250 dollars. It has a leather case quiver peep sights 11 carbon arrows stabiliser arm guard and finger guard with it, 3 broadheads and a few target points and a new string. But I also saw a used PSE compound 30-55# bow but it doesnt have any accesories with it except for a sight, and its 180 dollars. I want to used it for hunting stuff like hares. Which one should i get?
i also want to hunt bigger things are boars too big for a 65 pound bow?? they have thick skin around their ribs- i shot a .222 at one and the bullet mostly broke up on the outside- can a bow with broadheads get through this?

A: i never buy used archery equipment any more…i did one time years ago and to my dismay after i had it and shot 3 arrows the top limb seperated . after closer examination it was found that both limbs had hairline fractures that couldnt be seen by the naked eye. Be leary of either bow if it is used. as for which is the best…thats personal preferance ive hunted with PSE HOYT PARKER and MATHEWS…the PSE performed just as well as the other higher cost units

Q: What brand of comound hunting bow should i get?
I want to buy a used compound bow for deer hunting. i have looked around and these are the brands i have found bows of: 1998 PSE Nova Compound Bow, hoyt redline, Fred Bear- Black Bear. How are these brands? the prices for them are all around 100-150 and most come with extras.what type of bow should i buy with 175.00???? also what else would i need besides a bow in order to go hunting? thanks

A: Those are all good brands, I am not sure how good the models are.

Q: in your opinion do you prefer pse, bowtech, mathews, or hoyt compound bows best

A: Here’s the deal- the top 3 bows in the US in sales and customer satisfaction are the Hoyt, Matthews, and Bow-Tech. The very top 2 bows on the tournament circuit are the Matthews and the Hoyt-Both claim to have the most tournament wins every year. However, research shows that when a customer went to a pro shop to buy a bow, and shot all 3 of them, 8 out of 10 chose the Bow- Tech. I own the Hoyt and Matthews already, but I sure am anxious to try out the Bow-Tech.
I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the 3 bows mentioned.Be sure and go to a shop that allows you to shoot the bows and then decide which one you prefer. Good luck!

Q: Best Compound bow of 2008? Mathews, Parker, Hoyt, Martin, Bowtech, Diamond, PSE, or Bear?
Only vote from these 7
List your vote, age, and gender.

A: There are three that are in a dead heat for the best of the best.
Matthews DXT. Bow-Tech Admiral,Hoyt Katera. You can’t go wrong with any one of these bows, you can not list a single bow and call it the best, because everyone has a different subjective opinion on what is the best for them.

Q: What type of sight should I but on my bow?
I have a 67lbs hoyt reflex compound bow . I don’t know what kind of sight I should use fixed pin or one pin adjustable. Which is best?

A: The type of sight would depend on what you are using the bow for.
If it is hunting or 3d archery I would recommend a one pin adjustable sight.

If you are shooting paper I would recommend an adjustable sight with scope (with or without a magnifying lens) something like a sureloc
or even a copper john.

If you want more info on sights I would check out the following site and talk to anyone on this site and they can give you reports on every sight available( half of them most likely have owned all of them at one point in time or another.) http://www.archerytalk.com

Good luck and I hope you find the sight your looking for

Q: compound bow draw weight?
I was thinking about getting a hoyt bow..
im new to compounds and the one i want has a draw weight of 40-70#
and the feet per second was 303?
does this mean if i put the bow on 40# that i will still have fps of 303?
and if not what would it be?
im just wondering and if you could help me out thanks…

A: You are never likely to reach the quoted IBO speed of the bow, and at 40lbs you will certainly not reach it, no. The speed is a measure taken from arrow weight, draw weight and draw length.

Usually, the actual speed is somewhere between the IBO and AMO speed since they are different measurements… the only true way is to shoot an arrow using a chronograph. This gives a digital readout and will show the actual speed of the arrow leaving the bow.

At a guess, and its impossible to say, you would probably get something in the region of around 225fps.

Q: can you adjust the draw length on an approximately fifteen-year-old PSE compound bow?
I bought an old PSE last summer but the draw length is too long. I was just wondering if the older PSE had adjustable cams so I can shorten it up a bit.

A: It would be determined by which particular model you had. The old ones did have an adjustment range of about 3 inches. The cams would have 3 slots in each of them and the slot the string was in determined your draw length. But even so your bow may be in the shortest draw slots already. The only thing you can do is take it to an archery shop and they can look at the cams and tell if it can be adjusted shorter or not.

Q: Bowhunters….. I have a 27 inch draw, I use a PSE compound bow… what length of arrow should I be shooting?
I have a 1 inch overdraw rest on the bow….. I am interested in deer, turkey, and antelop hunting but I haven’t went bowhunting in about 15 years and really want to get back into it…..thanks for the help

A: Alright, if I understand it right, you have a 27″ draw with a 1″ overdraw. Generally you need a minimum of 1″ of arrow past your REST. Draw your bow back with an uncut arrow and have someone mark a spot on your arrow 1-2″ past where your arrow contacts the rest. So, depending on your rest, somewhere in the 25-26.5″ range

Q: I am looking to buy an inexpensive pse bow. What do others thing of it?
I would like to buy and inexpensive pse compound bow. I don’t have the money for a real expensive one and I would just like one that works well. I would like to know what other hunters thought about this. If it is a good decision or if I should look at another brand.

A: PSE makes good bows. I shoot a Matthews but I have a friend that shoots a PSE and loves it I think his bow shoots just as good as my Matthews. I just paid 2 times what he paid for the name. So like I said PSE makes excellent bows.

Q: i need an experienced archer’s advice on carbon arrow length/grain for a 75lb drawback pse compound bow?
my bow’s drawback length is 31″, 75lb drawback weight. i use 100 grain target points. i dont need advice on how to choose an arrow length and grain, i need a straight up opinion on what length and grain arrow to get from a knowledgeable and experienced archer. doesnt have to be olympic perfect stats. throw me a decent-working measurement. thanks

Q: what would be a good stabalizer for a pse spyder compound bow?
inexpensive and it has to be worth of my money

A: one of many get magnizum (sp) if you can ok thanks eddie

Q: PSE Stinger Compound Bow?
PSE Stinger Compound Bow?
what do the bow hunters think of this bow

PSE Stinger Compound Bow

thinks i am think of buying this so i want a opinion

A: It will be fine but don’t expect it to last a long time. PSE cuts corners on Cams and Bearings. If you plan on shooting the Bow a lot, you might get 2 years out of it, more if you clean it often.

You are better off getting a Hoyt or Bowtech or even Parker. Those bows are more rugged and those companies stand behind their bows better than PSE. PSE will stand behind their bow untill the check clears then blame you for any problem.

Not only me, but three guys I hunt with all bought PSE bows (4 total). I got mine at the PRO shop in Tuscon. They would not cover Cammo paint that was pealing off in sheets after 3 weeks. All of us had problems. 3 had paint, 3 had Cam problems, One had a limb splinter. PSE would not make it right for any of us. And given we have all hunted with Bows several years with no problems, we know what we are doing with bows, and all these problems happened within a year, one would expect the company to pony up.

And yes, we spent Top dollar on 3 different Models. They make junk. Get something better for your money

Q: how do i change the draw weight on a pse spirit compound bow?
do a need a bow press

A: There is a limb bolt that connects the limb to the bow riser. You take that bolt and rotate it to the left. Remember if you adjust one limb, you need to adjust the other. I also would not recommend that you do this by yourself. I would have someone with more experience do it for you. The spirit is an older bow which means it has no safety bolt. If you turn the limbs out to much, they will come out of the bow, all of the stored energy in the limbs will be released and it will be very pain full for who ever is holding the bow.

Q: I recently purchase a PSE NOVA compound bow with a 28″ draw what length do i need my arrows cut to ?

A: Your arrows should be cut to the length that tunes with the bow. For a tuning guide go to this website and follow the Easton tuning guide. It’s a very good starting point.

http://www.archery-engineering.co.za/downloads.htm

The Easton tuning guide addresses both recurve and compound.

Q: I have a PSE bruin compound bow. it has truglo 3 pin sight with a whisker biscuit How much should i sell for?

A: A pawn shop would give you about half of what it costs new if it is good condition. So anything more than that is good.

Q: what would be the best arrow length for a 75lb drawback Buckmaster PSE compound bow?
im a noob at technical archery statistics. i read somewhere that ‘usually an arrow the same length as a bow’s drawback works best.’ my bow’s drawback length was written on it as 31″, so i bought 31″ carbon arrows and they seemed to work fine, maybe a little shaky on take-off. and then i noticed that my arrows were sticking out a good 1 1/2-2 inches from my bow, so i got some 30″ arrows. but these are totally retarded. everytime i let fly them i can see the backends of them flapping back and forth on their way to the target, very inaccurate and sometimes veering completely off course. im sure getting a bow with a weaker drawback weight would solve my problem, but i like my bow. any other suggestions? should i go back to 31″ arrows or get an even shorter length?

A: Are you using these for hunting or just for target shooting? Hunting arrows need to accomodate a broadhead, so you need something even longer than 31″ so that the broadheads don’t touch your hand.

Either way, arrows have a spine size and length. The spine size determines the static spine, and the length, point weight, bow poundage determines the dynamic spine. First when you buy an arrow, you need to go to the arrow manufacturer’s website. They usually have an arrow chart. For compound it’s very straight forward, you take your bow poundage, and the desired length, it’ll give you the arrow size that you need. If the size doesn’t match with your poundage and draw length, it’ll give you these funny erratic flights.

Here’s how draw length is measured on bows, the draw length is the length from the nock groove to the back of the bow. Usually this means the length from nock groove to the arrow rest plus 1 3/4″. So you’re about right on with that 31″ arrow. If it flies funny, you need to tune the arrow, first consult the chart to make sure the size is right. For carbon arrows, the size might say something like 400 or 500 or 350, others list a poundage range 5575 or 4060. Aluminum shafts also have 4 digit numbers, but they say different things, 2315 or 2016. Take the 2016, that means the shaft outer diameter is 20/64″ and the wall of the shaft is 16/1000″ thick. Note, that it says nothing about the actual spine of the shaft.

Q: PSE Nova Compound Bow?
Im looking seriosly into bow hunting, and a friend has a PSE Nova bow. It is a 28 inch draw, 50-60 pound. He wants $75. I found a new one for like $250 so, is this a good deal. Its about two years old.

A: Yes its a good deal if your just starting out. The Nova was a mid range bow when it was introed. I would suggest taking it to a pro shop so that it can be checked out before you buy. If thats not possible then inspect it yourself. The most important thing is the limbs. Make sure you see no white edges anywhere from the riser to the cams. Everything else can be easily replaced or maintained if the limbed show no sign of serious wear.

Within a year you will be looking for another bow if you enjoy the sport. Hoyt and Mathews are the top makers and If I was you I would be oin the look out in the near future for a good deal on either of those 2 brands. A good deal on either of them would be $400 or less !

A few tips to make your shot alittle better.

1. Dont hold your breath.
2. Everytime you trigger the release should be a suprise to you. Squeeze it slow and focus on the target.
3. Wait for it ! That buck will not run if you wait for the right shot !’
4. I wouldnt shoot anything past 30 Yards !

Good Luck & Happy Shooting ! Hope this helps !

Q: can anyone out there tell me where i can find an owners manual with diagrams for a pse hunter s3 compound bow?
i just came in possesion of a pse hunter s3 compound bow but there was no manual with it the people who sold it to me had mysteriously lost or misplaced it would be very grateful to the one who can direct me to one of these comlete with diagrams

A: I can’t find a specific manual for the S3, however, this is PSE’s generic manual for entire bow line.

Q: Compound Bow Information on a PSE BowMasters bow?
It’s a PSE Bowmasters bow max draw=70lbs.

Does anyone know where I can get information abou this bow such as the other bow settings?

I’ve been told it is set at the lowest wieght. However I don’t know what that wieght is.

Can anyone help.

I bought 4560 wieght arrows will it work?

A: Your best bet is to go to an archery shop with it. They can measure the draw weight and check to see if the draw length is set for you. They can also cut your arrows to the correct length, if needed, all of which can determine the proper weight of the arrows you will need!

Q: What arrows should i use for my compound bow?
I got a PSE silverhawk compound bow, and i have no idea what type of arrows to buy.

A: Go to Bass Pro…D

Q: How do you decrease tension on a compound bow?
I have a compound bow, it’s 55-70 weight range and i need to lower it just a little

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PSE-RH-Compound-Bow-Thunder-Flite-w-Access-Bow-Case_W0QQitemZ200404725055QQcategoryZ20838QQcmdZViewItem

this is what it looks like, all the way.

How would i decrease the bow strength?

A: It’s a pretty standard procedure. The limbs are held in place with big allen screws. As you tighten these – meaning screw them into riser the bow weight goes up. As you unscrew them the bow weight goes down. The manual for your bow should tell you how many turns you can back the limbs out. This is actually an important thing to know because most PSE bows are “pre – loaded” meaning that there is tension on the string even if the screws are almost all the way out. Many manufacturers do this to increase power of the bow without increasing the fistmele. (the distance from the riser to the string when the string is at rest)

Generally, a full turn on the screw is about 4 – 5 pounds, but your manual should say. If you don’t have the manual, call PSE or talk to an archery pro shop. Also, pro shops sell T handle allen wrenches for making this easier to do – if you are going to mess with the weight of your bow often I would highly recommend getting one.

If you don’t know how many turns out from the riser you are right now, then screw the limbs all the way down and just back them off to your desired weight from there.

Yes, you can sell your bows on those “gun” sites…

Q: Has anyone ever used a compound bow before?
I am getting back into archery again after many years and need to use a compound bow due to a previous back injury but have never used one. What are they like to shoot? Are they as easy and smooth as people say? Does anyone know of a good company to buy one from?

A: Have a look at the Oneida, they are super smooth. As for easy, that term is relative. It is a lot easier to start with a compound bow, at the beginning you can go from zero to hitting almost all golds from 20 yards within a few sessions. The mechanical release, peep sight and the let off(to a smaller extent) made this possible. But to get to the top of the world ranking, it’s just as hard if not harder than a recurve.

Many people pick a compound for hunting because they can set the bow down during the off season and pick it back up again next year without much of a problem. Do that with a recurve or longbow and you’d be pretty much starting from scratch.

As for bow companies, other than the Oneida I mentioned at the top, some of the other major players are Hoyt, Matthews and Bowtech. You didn’t mention a budget, but if the sky’s the limit, you really can’t go wrong with any of the big names in terms of quality and support. Post sale support is the big question, some of the brands don’t have enough dealers around, that when something happen you’d be hard pressed to get support. Best thing to do is find a local archery store and try out a bunch of them. The bow’s capability today is way beyond our shooting capability, so it boils down to how you like the feel of the bow and the looks.

Q: i recently bought a used compound bow. it came with a metal bar, 8-9 inches in length, with a cylindrical weig?
it came with a metal bar, 8-9 inches in length, with a cylindrical weight attached to the end of it. how does this attach to the bow, and why? im guessing it attached to the bottom, facing away from the shooter, used as some kind of balance weight?

A: You would probably be correct that it is a counter-weight. Such a device is usually attached to the bow by means of a threaded rod at the end of the weight, which threads into a “nut” set into the bow (just below the handle). The threaded end can sometimes be inserted through a hole in the bow, and a separate nut threaded onto the rod.

I don’t personally like to use counter-weights on my bow, because there isn’t always enough room out front for them — and having one sticking out in front of the bow just limits even more the opportunities to shoot when I’m in brushy areas. Imagine having to swing the bow to the side while at full draw, and that weight bar is *clack-clack-clacking* against the branches and brush…..

Q: Can you use compound bow mechanical broadhead in a crossbow bolt?
I just purchased a Horton Summit HD Crossbow and some additional bolts. I am wondering, can you use expandable broadheads that are designed for compound bows, such as the RAGE 2, in these bolts or do I need to purchase broadheads specifically for crossbow bolts?

A: Absolutely! I shoot a Horton 175 HD with mechanicals and they perform flawlessly. Definatly go with 125 gr at minimum. I prefer them over fixed blades since they fly like a field point at 325 fps.

Q: I have bought a used compound bow and it has a bad paint job what type of paint would u use.?
Its gonna be painted black

A: i would say a spray paint meant for metal.. go online and look that up and i am pretty sure you will find something useful

Good luck.

Q: where is the best place I can sell a used compound Bow?

A: ebay

Q: SHIELD CUT FLETCHING USED ON COMPOUND BOW?
Im new to archery and I basically received a couple boxes of arrows for dirt cheap. They are shield cut and I have a compound bow… Is it still ok if I shoot them out of my bow? I don’t know if it makes a difference but I also have a whisker biscuit for an arrow rest.

A: They will shoot in your compound. But are the arrows spined right for your bow poundage?I have found the shield cut feathers to be a little more noisy in flight then the standard cut. The whisker biscuit will shoot them the same as any feather.

Q: Im buying a used Oneida compound bow?
At a local archery shop, I stumbled upon an older Oneida bow. Having never seen a compound set up like this one, I was very curious. I drew it back and was blown away by the smoothness of the draw. Im planning on trading in an old jennins for the Oneida. Does anyone have any opinions that could help me decide if this is wise. Thankyou

A: good choice ……don’t fall for the, I need to have greater than 300 FPS with that new Matthews bow…….make sure he puts on a new string and check the limbs for de-lamination….

Q: What is the best compound bow you have ever used?**?
**That isnt over $300.
**That is 40 – ^ lbs. draw.

A: I love my new Martin Bengal. All the features of a high price bow for hundreds less.

Q: what is a good used compound bow?
I am an advid hunter beginning to get into bow hunting. Please let me know what is a good bow with a draw weight that goes from 40-60 or 30-60 somewhere around that, tell me what is a good price and where I can get one. I prefer used
right now I’m borrowing a browning thing is though I don’t have but maybe $150 to spend on a bow right now the matthews dtx is my favorite but I don’t have that kind of money right now.

A: bowhunting is by the far the hardest kind of hunting there if for deer, i use a hoyt trykon, hoyt makes tons of bows for any draw lenght and weight

while mathews makes good bows, they are often way out of the average joes price range,

you cant go wrong with hoyt,

Q: what is a good compound bow for deer hunting?
ive never had a compound before, and i am getting bored with my crossbow. Im looking for models, draw weight reccomendations and just general size advice. Also prices for bows used would be nice, if i get one it probably wont be new

A: Buy a used one at your local archery shop that they took on a trade in. This way you will save money, and the shop can make sure it fits you,(draw length and draw weight ) and sell you the accessories that go with it that you may need. Plus, they will let you shoot the bow to see if you like it. Good luck!

Q: I hurt my collarbone using a compound bow, is this a result of bad form, how can I correct it?
I got a compound bow for my birthday, its a 55 pound draw, and I’m pretty new to archery. I went out and shot as many arrows as I could for a couple days. My right collarbone began hurting soon afterwards (I’m right handed) and I’m trying to figure out if its a result of bad form or if ‘m just sore from using different muscles to shoot the bow.

A: There is nothing wrong except you jumped into it and shot too much too soon. Lay off a while and just shoot a few arrows a day, and every few days add a few shots to your shooting session. The muscles you use in bowshooting are not normally used in the course of everyday life. You will have to gradually build up to the extended shooting sessions.

Q: I just bought a Mathews Drenaline Compound bow and its so cool.?
I have shot with a recurve for several years and this is my first compound bow. Can you recommend some good sights, rests, and releases that would be good, and any other accessories that I might need. Thanks for your help.

A: single pin from the top, drop away rest both made by Vital Gear, and a Fletchunter shorty… thats all your going to want on your bow. except for maybe a quiver mount. i see guys with so much stuff on there, it looks like an Apache helicopter. all you need is to see, hold the arrow, and release the arrow.

Q: Does anybody know how much a Mathews Compound bow solocam Q2 did cost new?
This model is discontinued and I can’t find one single site that says how much a 2000-2004 model did cost NEW. My friend is selling one for around $450. Has fiber optic sites, Arrow mount on side with stabilizer, cloth case. Is this a good price?

A: It does depend on the condition of the bow and all accessories.
But even at that bows don’t hold their resale value too well.
Bows are like PC by the time it out, it’s pretty much out dated.
And this bow is at least 3 years old.
I would advise you to take the bow to a bow shop and have it checked out for any problems first and while they are checking it out ask them what would be a good fair value on the bow.
$450 seem high to me for a bow 3 years old Mathews solocam, good bow from what I have heard, but still a bit high I would thank.

That my opinion

Q: How is the Mathews Switchback XT compound bow?
I am looking at cheaper bows and I just wanted to know if that bow has any major flaws for hunting and if many people realy prefer this bow.

A: I found many good things in the Mathews Switchback XT it sounds like it would fit your needs quite nicely there is no flaws in it but if you could save up a bit more I would reccommend the Z7 got it a couple weeks ago and im never giving it up usually I trade old Mathews bows for the newer models but not this time. They raised the bar and set the standard to a whole new level.
Happy shooting.

Q: What are the best Stabilizers, Releases, Arrow Rest, and Quivers for a compound bow?
I just bought a Mathews Drenaline Compound bow and its so cool. I just need a little help figuring out what extra equipment I need. Please Help. Thank You.

A: I own a Mathews DXT, I have the mathews HD11 drop away rest. Limbsaver stabilizer ( use a short one if you are planning on hunting ) and I have found that Beeman arrows are hard to beat for the price. I used to use the Whisker biscuit, they are good for not allowing the arrow to fall off, but there are some factors that I didn’t like. If you hunt cold weather, the fibers may freeze. To avoid that use some type of silicone spray on the fibers. You have to buy replacement biscuits. I would buy new arrows and in no time, the fletching would begin to look like a winding country road. I fletched my own arrows and had a lot of trouble keeping the fletch on the shaft, despite many, many tips. Just some of the downfalls with the WB but they are good. I like the drop away much better. Oh yeah, releases, ….. can’t go wrong with a Scott. Quivers, stick with a Mathews.

Q: Compound Bow Question ( Mathews Outback )?
I recently received a Mathews Outback as a gift from my step dad and I couldnt find a release for it but it felt like the draw length was a little long. I bought a new release today and it goes about to my ear on the side of my face but I can see in the peep sight just fine.

It says 28″ and 30″ on the top cam but im not sure what its set on.

My question is if I wanted to go to 26″ do I need a new cam or is that something a bow shop can do?

A: Yes, you need a new cam. Most bows can be adjusted about 2″ (yours goes from 28-30″) … not a huge deal to get changed but you need a bow press or need to take it to a shop.

Q: Mathews or Browning compound bow?
If money weren’t an issue, which bow would you buy, a Mathew or a Browning?

A: I own a Bow Tech (2 years old this coming fall) myself but I have looked into those Mathews and I think they’er one of the best out there right now and by far better then any Browning.

Q: where can i sell my compound bow in singapore?
mine is a mathew compound bow for female…

A: i lived in singapore for 2years and am also an avid archer, im not sure where you could sell one… i know there’s an archery store, or you could just try craigslist…

A: Matthews switchback is the best bow on the market! It shoots faster and harder than anything I have ever shot. They are a bit pricey, but in the end you will love it.

Q: Looking for info on an “Oregon Deschutes” compound bow. I have had it for years and it shoots great, Need info
The company closed in the late 1990’s and I am having difficulty finding out about this bow. I would like to know what it may be worth today as I am considering moving to a new Mathews bow. The bow has a draw weight of 50-70# and a 50% let-off. Thanks.

A: I would keep an eye on e-bay, that where I go when I’m looking for anything hard to find.
I always find it there to.

Q: I bought a Mathews drenaline bow. It has a spot hogg-it sight and a limbsaver ex-press,?
and also carbon express maxima arrows. I also have a ripcord rest. I am new to compound bow and I was just wondering if I have a good bow with the right accessories.

A: You have an excellent setup from the sounds of it.

Mathews is a great bow. The only down fall with mathews, is there warranty is not transferable. I have seen one of there bows blow up ( Dry Fired ) and they replaced the whole bow for free, no questions asked.

Best thing to do, is maybe find an archery shop in your area to go shot at it. Most have “pro” shooters there that can give you tips, and even let you try different gear on your bow before you buy, so you get to see if you really want to spend any more money ;)

Good luck, nice rig.

Q: How can i strengthen my arms to shoot a bow?
I am a deer hunter. I have a compound bow that i have outgrown but plan to use for the rest of the season. My dads buddy has a mathews bow that is just a bit too hard for me to pull back that he said i could buy from him. I shoot about 45lbs, how could i get the strength to pull 55lbs so i can use this bow?

A: A very simple (sometimes almost too simple) and very inexpensive exercise to help strengthen the “archery muscles” (primarily the back and shoulder – the bicep is secondary):

Get an empty paint can (WITH a handle) and fill it with 50 lbs of nails, rocks, lead, whatever. Set two chairs side-by-side so you have a “bench” to lay down on (if you already have a bench, that’s great – use it, instead); lay on the bench, on your left side (if you’re right-handed – it’ll be the other way around if you’re left-handed), with the paint can on the floor in front of you. Reach down with your “string hand” and lift the can up and across your chest, hanging the handle on your fingers, as though you are pulling a bow string back. (If you happen to use a release aid, be sure to use it to lift the can) IMPORTANT: Keep your elbow “up” and back, as though you are REALLY pulling back a bowstring to full-draw — use your shoulder and back muscles!!! Hold the can up at “anchor” for a few seconds and then lower it back to the floor.

Repeat (say, 2-5 sets of 10 reps each, resting between sets), to build up the muscle strength. When it gets too easy, add another five pounds to the can. Another way is to use weights (that paint can will work just fine), a rope, and a pulley set at shoulder height….

Push-ups are useful to help strengthen and build the “pushing” muscles in the bow arm, so go ahead and do them. You can also do “push-aways”, standing side-ways to a wall; lean sideways towards a wall and push yourself away with your bow arm.

Q: I am looking for a nice compound bow, what should I get?
I have recently decided to switch from crossbow hunting to compound bow hunting and I am looking to purchase a nice bow. My draw length is 27″ and I would like to have a draw weight of 70 pound. I used my uncle’s mathews switchback for a while and I liked it a lot. But I don’t want to bother with borrowing a bow. I have been looking into other mathew bows such as the DXT, Drenalin, and the S2. I will primarily use the bow for white-tail hunting and the occasional elk hunt out west. If you could please help me with what bow I should get it would be greatly appreciated. I am open to all suggestions.

A: If I were to buy a new bow at this moment, it would be one of these three. The Matthews DXT, the Bow-tech Guardian, or the Hoyt Vectrix. All three are the top of the line, and you can’t go wrong with any one of them. Good luck on your bow hunting this year.

Q: Where are some online sites to buy NEW hoyt, bowtech or mathews bows?
Hi,
I am looking into buying a compound target bow. I plan to go to a local store and try them out. Once I find a bow that I like, I would like to do some comparison price shopping. What are some good sites? (besides ebay) I am only looking for new bows and concentrating for now only on these brands (Hoyt, Bowtech, Mathews) Thanx!

A: Cabela’s, Bass Pro

Q: im buying a new compound bow and need help desciding which brand will be better?
Which brand of bow do you think is better? PSE, Bowtech,Mathews

THANKS

A: If you’re new to archery, I’d recommend whichever one your favorite local pro-shop carries. Quite honestly all the new bows are awesome, and most folks can’t really tell meaningful differences until they’ve shot a lot, and even then it’s hard to tell some bows apart.

So go to the pro-shop, have them show you a bunch of intro-level bows, and shoot many of them before you buy. Whatever you find most enjoyable to shoot will be the right one, regardless of brand, because you’ll end up shooting it more and get better.

Q: a nice youth compound bow?
i need a good compound bow for under $180 has a nice draw weight and can take small game so a 30-50lbs because i need it for deer
im willing to go to $200 and im 12 so base your answers off of that
big boy you told me every thing i wanna here

A: I am one hundred percent in love with the browning micro midas three. They are in my mind the best youth bow you can buy. The limbs that come with it are from 20-40 lbs limbs. You can upgrade the limbs as you get stronger for forty dollars. They shoot about 278 Ibo and accurate. The draw length is also fully ajustable from 17 inches to 27 inches. If you want to buy one brand new you it will cost you about 175 dollars.

Q: Is a 25 lbs youth compound bow good for me?
I’m about 1.70 meters tall and i plan to get this: http://www.arcuri-sageti.ro/kituri-junior/co-002-set-arc-compound-de-agrement.html. Would it be any good for rabbit hunting? i’m about 16 years old and i’m affraid i’ll look foolish using one of these. If you can recommend a bow for under 55 bucks i would appreciate it (btw, i live in romania and can’t afford shipping from other countries or anything pricier, jst cuz my dad is cheap, and i dont really deserve anything). Thanks for replying.

A: get a job and stop waiting for dad to do everything, u said u dont deserve anything so why are u asking your dad to waste 55 bucks on you. sound spoiled. that bow is small but prob all u can handle anyways. take it and be thankfull

Q: what is a good first compound bow for youth?
what is a good compound bow for you. I would like one that could take down turkey

A: If you’re new and still growing I got my kid a nice PSE at wal mart that didn’t cost too much, plenty of power for a turkey. You WILL have someone coming on there and tell you you need to spend 3 or $400 to get started don’t listen you may decide you don’t like it and have $400 worth of stuff you don’t use

Q: Is it OK to use a mechanical release on a Compound bow?
It’s a PSE mini G youth bow, and I heard that using a mechanical release can damage bowstrings unless you have a D-Nock loop. Is this true? Because I don’t think I can get one. Will i have to use a finger Release?

A: Depends on what kind of mechanical release, if you have a trigger release as opposed to something like a thumb or BT release, then the no. A BT release has a little loop on it that goes around the string, a trigger release put metal right onto the string, that’s bad. A D loop is not hard to make yourself, all you need is a thin maybe 100 lbs test braided nylon cord. Burn one end of it so you get a nice knob, do a lark’s head knot, cut to the desired length, burn the other end and do another lark’s head. Add some superglue to the knot for good measure.

Here’s a photo of it

Q: Advice on which compound bow to buy?
Im 14 years old and i am going to get a compound bow before the season starts. I currently own a pse spyder youth bow which i have grown out of and now it is time to get a new one. Im looking at the browning illusion and the the bear truth 2 which compund do you think i should get i dont care what brand.

A: I have read the test reports on the bear truth 2 in bowhunting world by norm mulaney. It is an excellent bow for any one to buy.

Q: Traditional longbow or compound bow?
I am looking for a new bow (my old compound youth bow no longer suits me) and I am considering getting a traditional longbow. I personally think the “old classic feel” of it would be nice. But I am worried about hunting and such. I mainly only hunt white tail deer, but would like to maybe try elk soon. Can I get some opinions and facts from people who have used both? Also, can someone give me a list of places that are good to buy longbows? I have found a few sites that “custom make them to my specifications” (my height, draw etc…)

I can pull my fathers 60 pound draw Hoyt fine.
I am 5′6 and weigh 160lbs
I forgot to mention the site I was looking at…

http://www.bpbows.com/modules/content/index.php?id=20

A: Compounds are instant gratification…they can be mastered rather quickly as compared to practicing enough with a traditional bow. But you are very limited as to what position you can shoot from. Traditional long bows are awkward in the woods due to their length, but my 56″ Browning recurve (overdraw to 60#) is handy enough and lighter than most compounds. I also soot a self bow that is 44″ nock to nock (21″ draw) that shoots a 375gr arrow at 200fps and is just about the handiest bow I have ever used…pretty much just a stick and a string…don’t worry about having adequate power. No amount of equipment and technology will ever fully substitute for training…get what ever bow feels go to you and practice, practice, practice

Q: I am looking at compound bow for a cheap price but good quality. what is it?
I like every form of hunting and I have 2 bear compound bows one is a youth and the other is junk what should i buy that is good and around 300 dollars?

A: Mathews or Hoyt.

Q: What do you think of a Darton Ranger 7500 bow?
I was given a Darton Ranger 7500 compound bow. The max weight is 60 lbs. It seems fairly old, maybe 10 – 12 years old. I tried to find some info on it, but the newer Darton Rangers are youth bows. This is not a youth bow, as you can tell by the draw weight. Also the draw length is pretty long as well. It is a dual cam bow. Anybody familiar with this bow?

A: I own one…I have 2 newer more expensive bows but the Darton is more forgiving. I’ve had mine for probably 12 years and have killed many whitetail deer with it and also a black bear. If it was a gimme, you were lucky

Q: A tip on how to get a bow.?
Well, I’m thinking of buying a youth compound bow considering I am only 5′0 and around 95 lbs. But since I am 14, I may grow fast. I’m really here for tips on how much drawback is too much or too little. I would go to an archery shop, but I don’t believe they have any in San Jose. So if any help at all, would be appreciated very much.

Q: Whats the best compound bow for me?
ok i have a real nice bow but its a youth and its starting to get small.I would like a bigger one.Im 15 and im 5′9 im pretty tall. And i need to know if there’s a nice bow out there.

A: I answered already ck it out!

Q: !!!!!Which Compound Bow do I get!!!!!?
I am 14 i already have a bow and it is too small for me now. My draw length is 28 inchs and i can easily pull back a 60 pound bow. I like many differrent types of bows, but my price range is 600 give or take some. I dont need some youth bow thats what i have now. im looking for a high end bow

A: That’s 600 for the whole thing or just the bow? Remember you also need arrows, arrow rest, sights, release, peep sight, stabilizer, sling, etc. High end compounds starts at around $600 just for the bow. Any of the big names Hoyt, Bowtech, Matthews, will make good bows, you just need to go out and test drive them. Any of those bows will outshoot any person alive, but in the end it’s about the feel of the grip and how the bow shoots according to you, it’s also about looks. What looks good to me might be hideous to you. So, go visit some specialty archery store in your area, you’re bound to see a whole wall filled with compound bows.

Q: Compound Bow questions!?
1.) I’m looking to upgrade from a youth bow and was wondering what is a good second bow that is affordable. I am a college student and don’t have a lot of disposable income. This for sure won’t be the last bow I buy so I’m not looking for a top of the line last bow I’ll ever buy type of thing.

2.) How do I figure out what the draw length should be for me? I don’t have the exact measurements for my arm span, but can find out easily.

3.) I have a problem with my shooting which is that my dominant eye is my left eye, but I prefer to shoot right handed (drawing back with my right arm that is) because my right arm is stronger. So is there any way to correct my vision to shoot right handed? ie. aiming a little to the right? I don’t think I like that sound of that. Or am I going to have to start to exercising my left arm more and buy a left handed bow.

4.) For deer hunting should I be looking in the range of 50-60# or 60-70# range. I know that 40# is all that is really needed to kill a deer with a well placed shot.

A: 1. I wouldn’t go for Hoyt, they’re usually a bit expensive. PSE I agree with, they make cheap bows. Look at stuff on ebay, you might get lucky. Always watch for the seller’s rep.

2. Rule of thumb is wingspan /2.5. Wingspan measured finger tip to finger tip

3. First thing, you shouldn’t be pulling with your arms, but exercising your arm is a whole lot faster than reprogramming your brain to switch eye dominance. It is possible to rewire the brain, but it takes at least a year of intensive practice to do it. Even then it’s not a guarantee that your old dominant eye won’t take over if you cock your head a certain way. What you do is you tape over your dominant eye and shoot for long periods of time. After a while your brain will accept the new dominant eye. This exercise also depend on how old you are.

4. 50-60# is plenty for deer. It’ll let you practice more often, and shoot more arrows.

Q: question about a bow and arrow?
what animals could i kill with the fred bear youth compound bow 22lb draw back.

A: small to medium game. Birds at close range, in some states they allow bowfishing, and it would be good for carp, but not much more.

Q: What is the best brand and type of bow for a begging archer?
I am now 17 1/2. I love guns, and love to target shoot. The other day I remembered the youth compound bow i got for christmas 4-5 years ago and how much I enjoyed it! Not to mention that I wasn’t to shabby at it. Until it warped itself… In that case, I REALLY want to get back into archery. I plan on alot of target shooting, and even hunting. I have read up on both compound and recurve bows, and i seem to favor the compound a tad bit more, but im just starting out.

A: PSE.

Q: Beginner Bow Hunter Question?
I decided to buy a compound bow to go bowhunting. I had a youth bow before, so i am not totally new. Im just wondering what is a good quality, cheap begginer bow and some accesorries (sight, rest, ect.) and for about how much.

A: Martin trophy hunter and Bear instinct or element are all very nice bows that are priced low. You should be able to pick one of these up for around 300 loaded with quiver, whisker biscuit, and sights. happy hunting.

Q: Compound Bow hunting and shaking during full draw?
I have a compound bow I recently purchased, and at “full draw” I have a problem with shaking. Any recommendations on what might decrease the shaking I am experiencing? I have a stabilizer currently on the bow, it is 4.5 oz. Should I increase? Should I decrease? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

A: Your muscles need conditioning.* Start practicing with it with out shooting any arrows from it.* Just keep drawing it over & over again until you can’t draw it any more.* Its called exercising & conditioning those muscle groups you use.* Draw & hold, Draw & hold, Draw & hold over & over & over.*

Q: What is the best broadhead for the money for Whitetail Deer Hunting? (Compound Bow)?
I am new to bow hunting and need some advice. What is the best bang for the buck broadhead to put on my arrows for whitetail deer hunting? Please advise.

A: I agree, Muzzy makes an excellent 3 blade 100 grain broadhead that’s well built and shoots straight.

I can get a six pack of these for around $35

Every year I use last years blades for practicing on a broadhead target then I buy a set of brand new replacement blades for $10 and put them on the night before season starts.

Q: Is it a good Compound bow hunting setup?
I have a 45 pound red zone falcon bow with a 5 pin fibre optic sight and a gel stabilizer with carbon fibre red zone arrows? I do not have any broad heads yet can you please recommend some?

A: Use fixed 3-blade broadheads, 100 grains. Muzzy, is a great make, but use can find others at cabelas.com and basspro.com, or if the store is close to you, you can go and see the selection for yourself.

Good Luck

Q: where is a good place to go compound bow hunting in melb vic?
i know u dont need a licence to use compound bow but need some where to shoot rabbits foxs feral animals etc etc…

A: In most areas of state forest it is allowed to hunt pest animals , but there are exceptions , so you need to check with the relevant office of the Department of Sustainability and Environment. Pick up a 2009 copy of the Victorian Hunting Guide put out by the DSE and it will also help. It is free call them on 136 186 and they will post it out.Otherwise click on the link below for the Sporting Shooters Association.

Q: Whats a good beginner compound bow for hunting?
Im thinking about getting into bow hunting for deer. I already deer hunt with rifles though. I want a good bow that doesnt cost alot and is camo. Plus im not that strong for my age (15) so i need one thats not to hard to pull back but will still kill a deer from 30 yards.

A: Get a Bear Lights Out tuned to about 50lbs.

It’s light, zero vibration, maneuverable, real tree camo, and has excellent let off… about 80%. Look up the reviews on it, they are awesome.

Q: what is the best compound hunting bow brand for a beginner bow?
looking to start bow hunting and I need a not too expensive bow to introduce me to the sport

A: Bear bows are what I started with and I really liked mine. Go to a bow shop and shoot the bows in your price range. Then you will be able to make an educated decision. Any bow on the market will kill a deer. The higher end bows are just made a little better. I shoot a Mathews now and it’s a big difference from my old Bear .

Q: What is a good and cheap compound hunting bow?
Im looking for a nice cheap compound hunting bow possibly under $150

A: i agree you maybe able to find a good used bow for that but not new. and yes pse sells bows at walmart for around 200 bucks and they work fine. the bow is only as quiet as you make it. i use limbsaver string leeches and spider leggs and my bow is very quiet. you get the quality you pay for but all the quality gear in the world isnt going to make you any better if you dont practice practice practice. i hunted for years with an old ben pearson bows and cheap tru flite arrows that i bought in a garage sale for $75 they worked great the key is practice

Q: bow hunting? im looking into getting a compound bow for hunting?
im looking into getting a compound bow for hunting, i live in victoria australia. what sort of bow should i get? and where from?
also where can i go hunting in vic?

A: I don’t know about vic but you could try the guys at Eagle archery in Brisbane ((07) 3808 4111) they helped me out and might be able to point you in the right direction down there. There is a lot of people who sell the gear who don’t know squat about it so take care. Look for the specialists in archery and steer clear of the gun shops (just my personal experience). Good luck.

Q: What is a real good compound hunting bow?
Price under about $600 max
Will be hunting whitetail deer if that helps any

A: I have a pse brute and have killed 5 animals. I live in montana and the 5 animals that i have harvested are all large animals and had no problem taking them down and the price and ruggedness is great.

Q: would i be able to kill a kangaroo with a hunting compound bow?
also how far do you think the kangaroo will run before it dies?

A: Piece of cake, as far as power/penetration is concerned. As stated previously by others, it’s a matter of shot-placement. Any animal can be easy to kill if it’s hit right, & can be pretty tough if it’s hit wrong. I’ve shot dozens of deer, (up to 220 lbs/100 kilos), completely through, as well as a similar # of wild/feral boar, (500 lbs/200 kilos),with a 60-70 lbs setup with no problem. (& pigs are big boned & fairly stout.) Any modern compound bow, say 50#’s or more, (with sharp broad-heads), will do the trick. Try to avoid the shoulder bones for example. A shot thru the ribs, tight BEHIND the shoulder, (if he’s on all 4’s) should make for a short tracking job. Good luck !

Q: What is the minimum draw weight for a compound bow for deer hunting?
Looking to buy first bow for whitetail deer hunting. Am going to practice for next year. Want to get a bow that isnt to hard to shoot.

A: As others have stated, it depends on the state you live in. In my state of Louisiana, the minimum draw weight is 30 lbs.You would have to make a perfect lung shot, and use a cut on contact 2 blade broadhead to be successful.

Q: what accessories do I need for a compound bow? hunting deer?
hunting deer in kansas. compound bow

A: You need a bow and arrows and lots and lots of practice with them. Know how it shoots from the ground and from a stand. Be able to make sitting or standing shots.

A range finder can be usefull sometimes. If you know the spot well etc, you will probable know you yardage, if you are in an open new area it may be harder to range your deer.

Q: what is a good compound bow for hunting that i can get for around 200 bucks? even for small stuff like turkeys
im looking to buy a bow that i can go in the bush with and bring back supper. something strong that wont break, and that i can get a turkey with, or other small game.

A: when it comes to bows ur better off buying used u can get a 200$ bow in excellent condition for like 40-60$

Q: compound bow hunting for beginner?
i am a beginner when it comes to hunting.my friend is a compound bow hunter.i liked it but i am not sure if that is what most people do.
i want to hunt for adventure and not to kill.i want to make it as a hobby and want to try something which is hard and requires skills.i feel that compound bow hunting requires practise and skills unlike crossbow hunting..
please anyone tell me about this.are there any other options..
i would like to hunt deers though.
if i wanted to kill, then i would have got a gun.that way u can kill a lot.with compound bow,u need to be a great expert and have good skills to kill..so i may end up killing very few dears, but here i have to develop great skills…hunting is just fascinating in that your mind should work laterally and involves multiple tasking…it may also be dangerous but thats adventure..indoor activities are boring after some time simply because they involve the same thing..
can u people advise me more..thanks for quick answers.

A: If you want to go out hunting for the adventure, try to shoot a recurve bow. I’m going out this Saturday and I’m excited beyond belief. There are no sights, no “give” at the end of your draw, and they’re just so much harder to shoot. Try on a target then switch to live game. I don’t think there will be a time where you pass up an eight pointer just because it was thrilling to see him. Good luck.
