Q: deer hunting?
hey i was wondering, yes i have never shot a compound bow in my life, but with alot of practice it being december 24, 2007 could i make it out to deer hunting by january 15 and take a deer? what do you think and merry christmas.

A: hunting is way more than just operating a bow or gun. its about ultimately coming within range of the animal and the steps to get there. you should have a bowhunter show you the skills then its just repetition from there on out. depends on how quickly you learn and get it down

Q: Deer Hunting?
Well im 12 and experienced my first Deer Season this year and withing 3 hours of hunting i was cutting open my firstdeer a 5 point, pulling out all the good stuff haha.

I was just wondering if any youth hunters got a nice deer and what there thoughts of hunting were
and if the older people here think youth hunts are good!

A: To the first response on here..the kid is 12 years old and excited about his first deer. Why did you feel it necessary to put him down for your own beliefs? You said that you were a veteran, which we all appreciate and respect, to protect our country and our rights, including the right to bear arms. Since we have the right to bear arms, we also have the right to hunt within regulations of our respective state. Some of my best memories growing up was hunting whitetail deer in western pa with my grandfather. It isnt all about getting the kill. Its the memories that you have, whether you are by yourself or with a friend or family member. Some of my fondest memories hunting, were when I didnt even get a deer. Its not all about going out and killing everything you see.

Congratulations on your first buck. Hopefully it is not your last. Most importantly, remember the times in the outdoors and cherish them. It is a wonderful place to spend your time.

Q: Deer hunting?
When I watch hunting shows I wonder why the hunter doesn’t shoot the deer in the head, rather than in its body. Why don’t they?

A: 1= It’s not the head you wont to aim for it would be the brain, I do feel sorry for the deer who ends up with it’s jaw blown away because some one missed the brain which = Starvation.
2= The head moves any direction quite quickly and unexpectedly, there by setting the stage for a disaster.
3= It’s not amusing how many Weekend Hunters don’t even shoot their rifle before deer season, and are lucky if they could hit a Mac Truck with their fist.
Their excuses, Ammo is Expensive or If you’re a Good Shot you don’t have to Practice.
4= Please Don’t Give This Type of Hunter any more dumb Ideas.
And who ever is under the belief that if you hit the heart it’s a quick painless death, sometimes.
And sometimes not, that puppy can act like a Timex watch, take a licking and keep on ticking long enough to hall his adrenaline pumped hide much farther through dense brush then you wont to hall him back through, and that’s after you discover you actually subdivided his Ticker.

Don’t be under the false impression that just because they profess to be a hunter.
That automatically makes them Ethical, Humane or even Intelligent.
It’s bad hunters that give Good Upstanding hunter a bad name.

Q: When does deer hunting season start and end?
WHen does deer hunting season start and end. Also is it illegal to shoot does and fawns, and just shoot bucks. Im doing a presentation on how it illegal to kill bambi’s mom.

A: It really depends on where you live as to when deer season starts. Here in Louisiana deer season is from Oct. 11 – Jan. 11 depending on what Parish you live in. Deer tags were published this year for this first time is a while. So you are allowed to kill only so many doe and so many buck. There is also a season for bow and arrow hunters as well.

Hope this helped you out.

And no it is not illegal to kill bambi’s mom.

Q: When does deer hunting with a gun start in wisconsin?
my dad and i are really exited to go hunting this season but we don’t know when the season starts. dad thinks it is in November and i think it is in october. When is the exact date for deer hunting season?

A: Your answer is waiting here….

Q: What is a good lever action gun and caliber for hunting deer and bear?
What is a good lever action gun and caliber for hunting deer and bear? Im looking for something cheap and something that will take out a bear but that i can also use for deer hunting and not damage the animal hide to much. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: Look at Marlin. They make the best lever actions around, in a variety of calibers.

The new .308 Marlin is made for a lever action, and is big enough for black bear.

http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/xlr/308MXLR.asp

I like the .45-70 – it’s big enough for any bear walking.

http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/bigbore/1895.asp

And the old, reliable .30-30 is a great choice, too.

Q: What factory load would you suggest for deer hunting with my 357 mag?
Looking to use my 357 mag for deer hunting this year. I’ve been told it’s a little on the light side for deer. I shoot pretty good out to 40 yards with the red dot scope so I’ll probably make that my limit. I have a 6 1/2″ revolver.

A: It’s not to under powered to 75yds in capable hands. I’ve killed a couple myself with the 38spl out to the 35,40yd marks using 125 +P and 158grn hollow points. In the mag the 158’s would be great with a good wallop. The advantage you also have is using the 38’s in the 357 since it’s interchangable. 38 in 357, but not 357 in 38 because of the pressure difference. Sounds like you have a good set up at moderate ranges. Good luck

Q: What’s the difference between killing dogs and deer hunting?
We all have heard about Micheal Vick, and pleaing guilty to dogfighting charges. My question is if killing dogs is inhumane then why are laws not the same for deer hunting? I have seen in houses people hanging the heads of deers that they have killed. Is that not inhumane, or is killing deers perfectly fine, but killing dogs is inhumane and illegal?

A: Because deer tastes good and I grew up eating it. Dogs, I don’t know. Dogs aren’t jumping in front of my car in the morning . Everyone is against hunting. Well do you all eat steak, fish, chicken? Let me guess all of you who said hunting is wrong are pure vegetarian? Right. How do you think that hamburger you’ve eaten got on that bun. Someone killed an animal to provide it for you. As man takes up their habitat I guess you buncha wussy’s think its better to allow them to starve and freeze to death. Oh yeah they can always get hit by cars and die a slow agonizing death if they aren’t lucky enough to get hit by a truck. Next time you go to the grocery store think about that meat your buying. I’ll bet the Great Plastic Wrap Fairy had nothing to do with it.

Q: What I wanna know is; Whats the difference between people hunting deer out there and Michael Vick’s dog fights
Why is it okay to hunt the poor innocent deer and other animals and eat them for dinner but there is such a big deal about this dog fighting. Why is deer hunting looked at as a sport but dog fighting is a crime punishable with prison time? Is it possible that because the majority of hunters are caucasion and the people who have dog fights are minorities. They have trophies for animal hunters and some people even hand the deer heads in their living rooms. I think both are wrong and if Michael Vick has to do jail time for gog fighting, hunters should also do jail time because both are cruelty to animals.

A: Hunters are not torturing the deer, they just kill them quick and easy. They put the head up because you dont eat the head and it looks cool to some people. Vick is an idiot for letting the fights happen on his property, weather he is black or white. If it was Brady, he would be getting ready to jail time too.

Q: I am looking to start Bow Hunting for Black Bear and deer, any suggestions of a good bow?
Looking to buy a new bow for Black bear hunting and deer hunting, any suggestions would be great.

Thanks, Matt

A: Ninja Bow

Q: Can I use a Mossberg 590a1 for hunting deer?
I am planning on buying a Mossberg 590A1 model 51668 for deer hunting and home defense. Would this firearm be effective for deer hunting?

A: If you use rifled slugs only at at distances up to 50 yards would I even consider it. It is illegal in some jurisdictions to use shotguns for hunting and mandatory in others like on Long Island NY because of the condensed population in rural areas. Be careful as the 590A1 is a short barrel only 18-20″ the effective distance and accuracy is not as good as would be the case with a longer barrel. My Mossberg 930 12Ga. Semi-Auto is 26″ and has interchangeable barrels. You can find a model which will allow you to interchange a rifled barrel for hunting with sabot slugs (better accuracy over long distance than a rifled slug) and 18″ for “home defense” like the 590A1 (which is the civilian purpose for buying a 590A1). Look into the 930. I have both the 930 and 590A1. I “use” the 930 for Turkey and Skeet. I hope I never “use” the 590A1 that stands next to my bed with 6 rounds of 00 Buckshot in it.

Q: How can I get my wife to tolerate my deer hunting?
She knew I was an avid hunter before we got married, and she has knowingly eaten and even cooked deer meat. For some reason, now, my hunting is a problem. I’ve tried all the logical arguments, but she still gets upset when I go hunting…Help!

A: Point out that hunting is actually more humane in a lot of ways. Cattle are bred just for food…they are shot up with hormones and antibiotics, castrated, branded, and then led to an “assembly line” style slaughter where they probably see what happens to the cow in front of them. Even worse with chickens, they mostly grow up crammed into pens.

When you go hunting, the deer lives its happy free deer life going where it wants, doing what it wants, and eating what it wants…until it’s shot, and if you’re a good shot he doesn’t even see it coming. To me that sounds a lot more humane. Personally I’d rather be blindsided by a hunter than killed in an assembly line at a slaughterhouse. Bring THAT up the next time she eats beef or chicken.

Q: What is the minimum draw weight for a compound bow for deer hunting?
Looking to buy first bow for whitetail deer hunting. Am going to practice for next year. Want to get a bow that isnt to hard to shoot.

A: As others have stated, it depends on the state you live in. In my state of Louisiana, the minimum draw weight is 30 lbs.You would have to make a perfect lung shot, and use a cut on contact 2 blade broadhead to be successful.

Q: Are there deer hunting locations near Las Vegas?
My husband is a deer hunter and we are planning on moving to Vegas. Are there hunting areas around there?

A: Absolutely!!! There are hunting units all over the place by and near Las Vegas. Depending on how far you are willing to go, some of, if not THE best hunting in the entire state is relatively close to Vegas. The Nevada Dept. of Wildlife has a complete list of hunting areas and they even give tips on every specific area in the state. I used to live in Vegas and the biggest deer I have ever seen, I saw just outside Vegas while hiking. I now live up in northern Nevada. Anyway here are some great links for you.

Q: What 308 round should be sure used for deer hunting?
I want to hunt deer for the meat. Not the trophy. I own a .308 remington. What grain and type of round should i use for minimal meat damage? Ide like to reload later down the road as well. What might be the preferable setup for my type of hunting? Powder type and amount, primer, bullet, any other variables?

A: I always recommend a bonded core or controlled expansion bullet for game, even deer. I use the Nosler Accu-Bond and the Barnes Triple Shock bullets in my 30-06 and 300 WSM, and I have absolute confidence in either out to 400 yards (hand loads). These type bullets retain near all their mass, don’t tend to fragment and have dynamic terminal effectiveness.
In .308 diameter the 165-180 grain bullets give the best section densities and Ballistic Coefficients without losing velocity. With a 308 cartridge you want to stay with 165 more so,with 180 grain bullets and the short case neck you get powder impingement and decreasing performance if using SAMMI COL lengths. You could use 150 grain, but I’ve always had better luck with 165s in 30 calibers for consistent accuracy and performance. As for bullet design, for me the standard cup and core bullets just don’t look as good once I started reloading, and event he Nosler Ballistic Tip is too frangible for my taste. Having used the Accu-Bonds I trust them, and having friends use the Barnes on an African hunt plus my using one on a bison (we bought it,not hunting) they have been 100% effective on deer, elk,Cape Buffalo, everything.
As for minimal meat damage, that comes with shot placement of a good bullet. Many standard bullets expand quickly, some near explosively ,so there can be a lot of kinetic energy transferred into the upper surfaces instead of deeper into the vitals. If you look at the Barnes video, that position on the deer, directly behind the front “ham” and about 1/3 up the chest is ideal for taking out heart, lungs, aortic arch, and many times the Barnes will “over penetrate” giving an exit wound, but they aren’t large. Perfect bullet performance puts 100%of the energy into the animal,so the bullet ends up against the opposite ribs, but having an exit isn’t a bad thing most of the time. Most of the bullets in the second link are bonded core or Barnes-and Barnes also makes Varmint Grenades-intended to expand explosively for varmints.
As for specific reloading info, you need 2 or 3 reloading manuals and then cross reference loads with the bullet supplier and the powder supplier for good loads and places to start. Never trust mine, your uncle Bob’s or anyone else reloading information until you verify it . With that being said,BL-C(2),Varget, IMR 4064 are good powders to start with. I use CCI Large Rifle primers, but primers are what ever you can get these days, and normally not critical in a hunting round.

Q: What Are Some Whitetail Deer Hunting Techniques?
I am 17 years old, new hunter, and I’m going to New York to hunt with a 12 Guage shotgun and deer slugs. I am going to be in a heavily wooded area with some fields every now and then, and It will be cold and snowing. What are some good techniques I should know for hunting Whitetail in Up-State New York?

A: I will be out also, if you are hunting in Upstate NY you better be using a Remington 12 gauge!! If you are hunting southern zone it will be wet and mild, at least until Monday. Every year I sit in a tree and just wait if your quiet usually you will see something, one year I shot a deer after being in a tree for 15 min. other years it has been 3 hours and some years 7 hours, the key is to have patients, force yourself to wait another 15 minutes when you want to move, than another 15 min. I can’t tell you how many times I have forced myself to stay in one spot when i didn’t want to and ended up shooting a deer a short time later. Good luck.

Q: What is the best broadhead for the money for Whitetail Deer Hunting? (Compound Bow)?
I am new to bow hunting and need some advice. What is the best bang for the buck broadhead to put on my arrows for whitetail deer hunting? Please advise.

A: I agree, Muzzy makes an excellent 3 blade 100 grain broadhead that’s well built and shoots straight.

I can get a six pack of these for around $35

Every year I use last years blades for practicing on a broadhead target then I buy a set of brand new replacement blades for $10 and put them on the night before season starts.

Q: What are some of the best Whitetail deer hunting outfitters in America and Canada?
I’m looking for some excellent outfitters for whitetail deer, I’d just like some opinions. I have some in mind but I’d also like to see other peoples thoughts and opinions, Thanks.

A: BassPro, Dick’s, Sports Authority, sometimes Walmart. Often the best ones are local shops, but it also depends on if you are looking for low price or high quality.

Q: How much does a whitetail deer hunting guide make per year or per hunt but perferible both.?
What the title says. But this is what id love to do and 1 day I would love to have a ranch of my own.And I would not just work for just deer season i would like to work for different animal seasons what would i have to do to do this? And i would like to make a kerer out of this.and do you get any benifits for working at that ranch like free hunts or what.

THANKS

A: few guides generly on big places like yo for example do fair on tips about same as any service that rises with celebrating// the foreignors generaly make the efforts put out more than modestly worth while,

Q: What is the whitetail deer hunting like in the mountains of Oconee county south carolina?

A: tough – steep hills and rough hunting, but you can find some good ones if you can get back a ways. Check out Sumter forest in mid state, Clinton/Greenwood area too

Q: When are the rut, pre rut, post rut, and other seasons for whitetail deer hunting in Southern Michigan?
Hunting with a firearm in michigan starts soon and i was curious when these specific seasons were…i have a pretty good idea but i want 2 know like the months and days and that type of information about hunting.

A: That’s a very hard question to answer because rut follows weather patterns and it changes every year. Rut usually takes place during the middle two weeks of November, but because of our warm fall, I would be willing to bet that it wont start until late nov, early dec. Predicting dates on rut is impossible.

Q: Hunting whitetail deer with a 9mm MP5 carbine, will it work?
My friend Theodore who knows little about guns just purchased a MP5 clone carbine in 9mm. He says that he will go deer hunting with it and shoot hollow points at them. Will it kill whitetail deer? I told him that it is not a wise choice.

Here is a picture of what it looks like, they are made by Vulcan Arms.

http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct511.aspx

A: 9MM doesn’t have enough down range energy to successfully take deer…..

Look at this 9MM ballistics chart…..

http://www.shootingtimes.com/ballistics/9mm_luger_9×19mm.html

As you can see the 9MM has only 275 to 350 foot pounds of energy at 50 yards….

It is generally accepted that you need a cartridge that has 1000 foot pounds of energy minimum to ethically take deer…..

The 9MM most likely will injure the animal where it will run off and die a slow pain-full death…. This isn’t cool… It should be 1 well placed shot and the deer drops quickly….. A 30/30, 270 or larger rifle caliber should be used…..

Q: During the whitetail deer hunting season in lower michigan what dates are the prime time for the rut?

A: The rut occurs at the same time nationwide.

There is no correlation between weather and rut. Nor is there one with regard to the moon.

Here are the proven facts. Bucks begin to rut and want to mate when Does begin their estrus cycle.

A doe begins her cycle, and starts putting out pheromones when the days get shorter. A less and less light passes through a Doe’s eyes, it sends them into their cycle.

I recall a test from a university many years ago where 3 species of deer, White tail, Black tail, and Mule Deer, were placed in an indoor environment. As the testers controlled how much daylight entered the building, the deer were fooled by getting short days in July. This sent the Doe’s into their cycle, and the bucks began to rut.

Also the tests showed how in November, artificial light sustained long days, and there was no rut in October and November.

This is fact. The shorter days of Autumn bring on the Rut, and it is the same time everywhere in the continental US. The Rut begins around the 2nd week of November, and runs until the 1st week in December. Its Peak is around the 3rd and 4th week in November.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting.

Q: Reloaders: Which 223 bullet for hunting whitetail deer?
I intend to hunt whitetails this season with my AR-15. What type of bullet is best and what is the heaviest bullet that I can load to magazine length without sacrificing powder capacity?

My state allows 223’s for deer and I am not looking for suggestions for other calibers, I am simply trying to load the best and most humane 223 that I can shoot from a semi-auto.

A: My favorite is the 60 grain soft point that Nosler discontinued over 10 years ago. It mushrooms like a good 30 caliber and has good weight retention.I only have about 400 left and then I’ll be sad. Try the Sierra 69 grain Match King. It breaks apart when it hits, but the back half of the bullet stays together, usually with the jacket folding around the lead core so it penetrates well, but sometimes doesn’t go as straight as I’d like after entering a deer. I’m planning to try the Sierra 65 grain Game King bullet. It looks good and Sierra doesn’t make bad bullets. Since you are using a semi-automatic be careful if you use a lead nose bullet. Sometimes lead scrapes off as the bullets feed into the chamber. This usually isn’t bad, and to test for it fire a couple rounds, drop the clip, and take the loaded round out of the chamber and look at the point. Hollow points like the Sierra Match King and polymer tipped bullets feed better. You also have to know the twist rate of your rifle’s barrel. To use heavy bullets you must have a twist rate of one turn in 7 or 8 inches to stabilize the heavy bullets. Some bullets that stabilize in my Ruger Mini- 14 with a 1 in 7 twist will not stabilize in my Ruger 77 with a 1 in 12 twist. Although I haven’t used it yet, I’m sure the Sierra 65 grain Game King will stabilize in the slow twist barrels. First try the Sierra 69 grain. It should do well.

Q: What is the best rifle for whitetail deer hunting?

A: Where do you hunt most of your Whitetail, for medium to short range (in this order), 308, 7mm-08, 243, and medium to long range, 25-06, 270 and 7mm. Of course there are many others to chose from or add to this list like the 30-30 & 30-06 but every one under the sun owns one, but me. All of them are very effective and will work well with good shot placement.

Q: I am going to be hunting whitetail deer this year, with a shotgun, what is the best choke to use.?
I am going to be hunting white tail deer this season, with a shotgun for the first time. My barrel is a smooth bore barrel, so I am wondering what kind of choke I should use, if I want to use, slugs, buckshot or sabot rounds. If anyone has any info it would be appreciated.
The current choke in my barrel is a Remington Mod Choke.

A: The choke you have is fine. Use rifled slugs. Sabots need a rifled barrel and buckshot is not as lethal at greater distances.

Rifled slugs are lethal out to 100 yards easily.

Q: What is the best round for a 300 mag hunting whitetail deer?
I am typically shooting from 200 to 400 yards, through a wide open bottom. I am using a Model 70 Winchester with 4-12X50 Nikon Buckmasters scope. (Just to give you and idea of my setup) Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks

A: 150g. Win. soft-point

Q: is whitetail Deer hunting is essential for the deer population?
There are so many deer taken every year.. dating back for a long time.. there are people who say deer hunting should be illegal.. if it was stopped the deer popultion would be out of control right?

A: Previously, the deer population was kept in check by predators, mainly wolves. When the wolf population was decimated by expansion of farming communities, the deer population began unchecked growth.

Now, these deer face inadequate food supplies, which leads to wasting sickness.

The idea behind the hunt is to provide a check to this population growth. In a state with a proactive DNR, the size of the herd(s) is well known, and the resulting number of licenses granted is representative of the amount of deer in excess of the optimum population.

Q: What .357 magnum factory loads would be most efficient for hunting Whitetail deer?
I’ll be using a Dan Wesson .357 magnum revolver with an 8″ barrel at distances up to 50 yards.

A: Both the 158 and 180 grain hollow points are good choices. A cast 158-180 grain has also taken a lot of whitetail over the years. All will do the job and have done the job in the past.

Q: What is the perfect rifle for hunting whitetail deer with a recoil less than a 12 ga. shotgun?
No stupid answers please. Im a hunter with a year of experience. I am 14 years old. I am 5′9″ and 190 pounds. I am currently using my dad’s marlin .44 rem. mag. model 1894S. It works great but I am lookin for a rifle of my own. Any suggestions?

A: Holy cow. You are 5′9″ and 190 pounds! You’re a giant! When I was 14 I was on the wrestling team and wrestled in the 95 pound weight class.

Since you are big big young man, you will probably grow into a big adult man. Why not get a rifle that will suit your needs when you are 20 years old and beyond? Look into something with some real power that you can use for many years to come; 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 300 Wby Mag..

Here’s the deal with rifle shooting those magnum calibers. You usually only shoot them at the rifle range one or two shots at the target to make sure they are sighted-in. And, when you are hunting, they are usually one shot kills…with your adrenaline running from the excitement. You won’t even feel the recoil when you shoot at a deer!

Compare this to trap or skeet shooting with a 12 gauge shotgun, where in a competitive event, a shooter will shoot at 100 targets.

Ok, so which is going to be more punshing on your shoulder? 100 shots with a 12 gauge shooting 1 1/8 oz. target loads? Or, 2 shots from a 7mm Rem Mag from sandbags?

Q: Hey im going hunting for my first time for mule deer help?
ok so my first time going mule deer hunting or hunting at all for that matter. and its bow hunting, im 15 and going with one of my dads friends who i have known for all my life hes a very experienced hunter. were hunting in AZ northern i think not sure but i need 2 know what kind of camo i should buy
any help would be great and any tips would be great to thanx

A: Buy light colored camo or camo like mossy oak thats pattern is very tight. It will make you less visible. Deer can see the colors blue and yellow, but just because they are near COLORblind doesnt mean they have excellent vision for outlines and silhouettes of people.

Q: What is a good mule deer gun for bush hunting with shots 200yds or less?
I already have a .30-06 but im looking to buy a rifle specificly for deer, I was thinking about maybe a .308, but I want to hear about other calibers too. I hunt mule deer in my area. (Coastal B.C Canada) My 30-06 does fine but it is a little big, I primarily use it for elk and moose. Any input is appreciated Thanks.

A: I’m going with Carson on this one. A .30-30. Preferably a Marlin 336 also. Good, solid, utterly accurate gun for the money. .30-30 will easily drop any deer out to 200yds. and beyond (trajectory may become an issue after 200 though…). I’d stick with the .30-06 though. It does a good enough job.

Q: Mossy oak brush camoflauge is it good for Mule Deer Hunting?
I will be hunting in just about everything from sage, pines, aspens, cedars, and mahogany’s. Is this a good camo I will be archery hunting and like the way it looks thanks. Any other suggestions?

A: ‘Good camo’ has nothing to do with what you are hunting, and everything to do with WHERE you are hunting. If you like that pattern, buy it. There is no true universal camo (ask the military, they keep trying), but anything is better than a bright red sweater and jeans.

In the pure sense, open country sagebrush camo patterns, aspen and harwoods are all totally different patterns, and nothing is going to blend perfectly everywhere.

Q: In the game “The Hunter” how do I switch from hunting mule deer to white tail deers?
Please answer this question. It says on my account that I have the trial version of white tail deer. Also after joining the competion how do you play in the competion?

A: maybe ask in the videogame section

Q: sw colorado mule deer hunting?
ok, so i may have a chance at hunting mule deer in SW colorado in late october or november. what would be the likely range of a shot? i dont know the terrian there so i dont know what rifle to take.

if it’s under 250 yards i’ll probably use one of my MN 91/30s.

A: In that area depending on where you are can be very rugged and open or lots of trees. I have seen deer miles away in the open and hard to get close to several herds. You could be faced with a long shot or hoping later for a close up shot in the tree line. Take your long range gun….it could be your only shot.

Q: Would take a .243 moose or mule deer hunting?
My dad just bought a Savage 111FCXP3 package series in .243. I was wondering if you would take it moose hunting. i can drive up to them on my quad to about 50 yards and get out so i thought at 50 yards you should drop em if you put one in the vitals. For mule deer ill be shooting them at about 100-200 yards so i thought a 100 gr will do it.

A: the 243 is one of the best deer rounds on the market, ive seen it used on large elk with no problem. if your an excellent shot you could drop a moose out to 50 or 100 yards no sweat. if your not comfortable hitting a target the size of a quarter i wouldn’t advise it. if you do try to kill a moose with it i would study their anatomy to find the best spots for a clean kill

Q: Which caliber is better for California mule deer hunting, 7mm-08 or 7mm magnum?

A: I’d stick with the 7mm-08, that will be more than plenty for mule deer hunting. It is a good solid performer.

It is true that the 7mm rem magnum fires the same bullet at higher velocities, but this comes at the cost of reduced magazine capacity, longer action, and most importantly more recoil. If you have experience shooting 30-06 level rifles with no hitch you will be fine with 7mm rem mag, but otherwise you have absolutely no need to go to that power level for mule deer.

Q: Where is a good place to hunt mule deer in oregon?
ok please help me. i want to shoot a big mule deer buck because i think it will be my last hunting expeience with my grandpa. we both have 10 prefrence points so i think we could draw any tag. it is his dream to shoot a mule deer before he dies, so please help me!

A: I have never personally hunted it, but I have hear good things about the Whitehorse, Owyhee and Beulah units for mule deer.

Q: is mule deer hunting good in vanhorn tx?

A: It can be good; however it depends on the hunter and the property. It will be a very primitive hunt, in that area. Don’t expect much in the way of blinds and cabins. Expect to hunt wide open, rocky, mountainous terrain. In addition, land management is critical. If you hunt at a guided, managed ranch, you’ll do well. If you are looking at the cheap land for sale on craigslist, or the “ranchette” sites, good luck. There won’t be a road or any utilities on the property and it is in the middle of nowhere. Hot in the summer, like real danged hot, and cold, WINDY, winters. Good luck; don’t buy anything out there without seeing it… The muleys are there, though, but this is the roughest country in Texas. I prefer civilized central Texas, south Texas, or hillcountry hunting. West Texas hunting is like hunting in Wyoming… about as desolate too.

Q: whats a good rifle cal. for a woman to go hog, white tail and mule deer hunting other than 223 and 243?
she needs something with little recoil but packs a punch

A: Moving up, the .257 Roberts and .270. My wife shoots .270 fine.

Q: What is a good book on hunting Mule Deer?

A: I’ve never seen a book, but magazines such as Outdoor Life and Field and Stream always have a few articles about mulies per year. You can also do some research on the web and come up with answers to any questions you have.

Q: can anyone help me find info on hunting elk , mule deer or hogs on my own?
id like to hunt elk , mule deer or hogs on my own without paying an outfitter to help me get what im looking for . if anyone is iterested in hunting with me let me know .

A: what state are you in… that’ll make a big difference…

Q: need advice for Colorado Mule Deer hunting.?
HI, I’m going to Colorado on a self guided Muley hunt. I have drawn GMU Units 4, 441, 214, and 14

Any advice you can give me about these areas would be great.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

A: Having only hunted 19, 20, and 6 I can’t give you much advice but you might try Cabelas.com and go to their talk forums. There’s a fair amount of people on the site from here in Colorado that have hunted other units.

Q: were is the best mule deer hunting ?
have heard the new mexico has some pretty big mulies

A: New Mexico is “just ok” in my opinion. I live in Montana an apply for Nevada every year hoping to draw a tag for America’s true trophy: a B&C Mule Deer

Q: Which Rifle scope is best ofr Whitetail and Mule deer hunting.?
Having been away from hunting for several years due to overseas work i am now refitting rifles with scopes etc. Considering that I WILL be using something between 3-4 X 9-12 with a 50 mm rec. Im now looking at brands..
Busnell, Nikon, BSA, Leatherwood, leopold. Taking into consideration the bang for the bucks In leaning toward the Leatherwood. We have all heard that its better to have a $ cheaper gun with a $500 scope than vise versa… * Dont always agree with that.* Anyway id really appreciate personal opinions…

A: I can tell you from my experience….. The best scope I’ve used was a Leupold. The glass has very good clarity and can with stand the recoil of any gun. Next in line would be the Nikon, it to has good clarity and with stand the recoil of a semi-auto .30-06 rifle. Bushnell, is third on my list. The clarity isn’t as good as a Leupold or Nikon, but it can with stand the recoil of a .300 Winchester Mag. As for a BSA scope…. I wouldn’t put it on a centerfire rifle. I have my doubts that it can take a blow from a recoil of a deer rifle. I’d keep the BSA on a rimfire rifle.

I have no experience with a Leatherwood scope, so I can’t offer any feedback on that brand of scope.

Q: What caliber rifle should I get for deer hunting?
I live in Virginia and am looking to buy a rifle to hunt deer. It seems the caliber for deer ranges from .243 to the 30-30 at the top end. I want something that will definitely kill the deer but won’t blow my shoulder off at the same time so any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: Before you buy a rifle, make sure you can use one in the area you’ll hunt. Much of VA is shotgun only. If you’re in such an area, a 20 ga will work great if you can use slugs; if buckshot is required, a 12 ga is the better choice. VA is an odd place…I hunted on Quantico a few years, which required slugs and forbade buckshot; right outside the gate it was the opposite, absolutely no slugs, had to buckshot only. Here’s a list of local firearm ordinances that specify rifle/shotgun use for deer: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/regulations/local-ordinances.pdf

If rifles are okay in your area you can’t go wrong with any of the common and popular rifle cartridges, such as .243, 7mm-08, .30-30, etc. Even the more potent rounds such as .270, .308, .30-06, 7mm mag, etc, now have “managed recoil” loads available, so they are within reason too as long as you opt for a mid to heavy weight rifle and a good recoil pad.

VA whitetails aren’t that big on average, so any of the lighter end rounds will work fine. More important is your ability to put a single shot into the vitals. Once there, even a .223 with a proper hunting bullet will work fine.

Q: How can the NAACP say Dog Fighting is no worse then Deer Hunting?
Excuse me,but I lived in the country where the deer population was Big. Once a year you could go deer hunting. Most people I knew ate the deer they killed. How can that compair to someone delibertly killing man’s Best Friend?

A: You ain’t gonna shoot Bambi are ya……………#######

Q: What is so interesting about deer hunting?
I don’t get what the big thrill of dressing up in camo, putting on bottled deer urine, climbing into a tree stand and shooting the deer with a high-powered rifle with a scope is all about. It’s not real hunting….any real man would hunt a deer with his bare hands and if he could kill it….then he’d be a real hunter. Rifles are for pussies.
Even using a knife or spear…that’d be better. At least you’d learn the actual “hunting” skill that would be required if you were ever in need. I mean, after all…if you get lost somewhere how many high powered rifles with 300 yard scopes will be laying around? Be men goddamnit….strangle the deer and then eat it’s bleeding heart.
Yikes, I always thought deer meat was really dry. I don’t mind the jerky though.
And yes I have shot a deer before, and I thought it was really lame. I was there with my cousin in our tree stand and it just walked right out and I shot it. It was far, but with the scope I hit it right in the neck. The meat tasted like crap and gutting and skinning it was far too much hassle. If I were to hunt for meat again, it’d be at the grocery store with the rest of the people that have common sense. But to you folks that think you’re preserving some “hunting tradition”…….good luck to you and your deer (that odds are you’ve been baiting and luring for months now). Maybe he’ll just fall over for you!

A: In that case – You should know all about rifles!

Excellent inexpensive meat.
Let me know which store you can get 100lbs of 98% lean steaks for around $25.

If it tasted bad – you didn’t fix it right.
It’s lack of fat makes it taste different.

Also – if you go for the biggest, oldest deer (with a big rack), you’re not going to get quite as good of the meat’s as you do with a smaller 1 or 2 year old one.

Q: What would be the best pump shotgun for deer hunting (using slugs) and home defense (using shot)?
I am looking for an affordable 12 gage pump shotgun for multiple uses; home defense and hunting deer and turkey. I want to use slugs for deer hunting but I know that slugs would not be a reasonable home defense ammunition. What should I look to purchase?

A: Take a look here…… Mossberg offers a 500 model 12 gauge pump that come with 2 barrels….. The long one is for hunting — When you get home put the short one on for home defense……

http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/NEW/54169.jpg

Mossberg makes excellent shotguns….. Don’t let the inexpensive price fool you. These are really nice shotguns……

Ammunition for home defense?…. Buckshot of course…. 8 or 9 pellet 2 3/4 inch is perfect…. Here is whats in my Mossberg shotgun……

Good luck

Q: What rifle should i get for deer hunting?
I have only went deer hunting last season for 2 weeks and used a yacht 36 i believe to bag my first deer. I am expierenced in shooting since i have ben in the military for 5 years. what rifle do you recomend?

A: Wow Bizzoid, this is actually a tough question.

When you say deer rifle do you mean rifle brand or caliber.
There are many calibers that will take down a deer.
.243win, .270win, .308 and .30-06 are my personal favorites.
I know there are many more that people have used and love.

If you’re new to shooting rifles then the .243 is great because it doesn’t have terrible recoil. I personally don’t feel that a magnum round is necessary for deer.

If you’re asking what rifle to use, the answer is just as long. There are many good rifles to be had. The venerable Remington 700 BDL or CDL is still considered a great rifle. (it’s the best selling rifle of all time) If you’re willing to spend a little more money, the Browning A-bolt II is a fabulous rifle. Savage makes some very inexpensive rifles that are great starter rifles.

I have a Tikka T3 lite Stainless/Synthetic in .270win that is my personal favorite on most deer hunts. I really love this rifle and it isn’t an expensive gun. I shoot it very well.

There are so many good rifles out there.
Use what you like, feel confident with, and can shoot well. Be careful of your shot placement (more important than the rifle, caliber, or scope you’re using) and you’ll have venison on the table.

Q: I am looking to start Bow Hunting for Black Bear and deer, any suggestions of a good bow?

Q: What are some of the best Whitetail deer hunting outfitters in America and Canada?
I’m looking for some excellent outfitters for whitetail deer, I’d just like some opinions. I have some in mind but I’d also like to see other peoples thoughts and opinions, Thanks.

A: BassPro, Dick’s, Sports Authority, sometimes Walmart. Often the best ones are local shops, but it also depends on if you are looking for low price or high quality.

Q: Deer Hunting outfitters IL?
Ok is it just me or are all the outfitters in IL, screwing up hunting for normal guys like me. I see more and more out of state people every year, and half are from big citys and dont know a thing about hunting. Last year a friend of mine was almost kill by one. So i guess im asking is anyone else pissed at all the outfitters or is it me?

A: I counted 20 listings at Hunting dot net…
sadly the outfitters do bring in commerce. Hotels and restaurants make money too. I understand about Idiots afield you best step is to open conversation with your state Representative maybe limit the amount of outfitters in an area.

Q: looking for deer hunting guides and outfitters in Iowa?
looking for guides and outfitters for archery hunting in Iowa
other options would be farmers or private land owners that
are looking for hunters willing to pay for hunting opportunities
in south easr iowa

A: As for as finding hunting land?
My company had me in Iowa for about 2 yrs. Specifically the Cedar Rapids area. Had never lived there (Iowa) prior.

I’m also an avid hunter. Mostly bow. However did not have any hunting contacts in that area.

I put together a small two page letter of introduction about myself. To include a picture of my drivers license. Vehicle info that I would be driving. Home address-work address-cell and home phone numbers.

Had my manager write up a short letter stating I was a reputable and reliable employee. No criminal history.

And simply targeted the area I wanted to hunt-knocked on farmers door. I ended with about a dozen different farms that I had permission to hunt on. Really only turned down because a farm had been leased to others for hunting rights.

Just a thought. Worked for me.

Q: Are hunting outfitters making hunting a sport for the rich?
Where I live here in Eastern Illinois I just don’t see a need for it. About 20 years ago when I started hunting myself it was no big deal to get permission on private property which was basically the only way one could hunt unless you owned your own land.
I moved away for a few years and now suddenly there are like 8 or 9 outfitters here in my county. The problem I have with this is that these so-called outfitters try and lease up all the land they possibly can. This has made a huge impact around here with hunting because so many people have quit hunting because they have no where to hunt now and can’t afford to pay for an outfitter because they’re marketing to the wealthy which is a total crock anyway because these guys usually don’t know crap about hunting so they go to outfitters who know exactly when and where a buck will come in. Good for them(outfitters) in knowing that, but that is not HUNTING.
Hunting has become a game of target practice for these damn outfitters and their clients, and that is not hunting. Hunting should always be fair chase, and available to the tax payers of the state. If the state of Illinois is going to be giving out outfitters licenses, then they need to do something for the people who have grown up with hunting as a tradition and way of life. Make more public land available or restrict how much land the outfitters can lease up, because that is the biggest problem I see. Shoot just last year I lost permission on some land that I’ve hunted for almost 17 years because some jerk came and offered him a lease to use for outfitting. This makes me sick because that is where I killed my first deer, my sister killed her first deer and I had hopes of my kids taking their first deer there. What the owner didn’t know is that he was signing away his say-so on who can hunt there including himself, and that happens all the time. These outfitters come up with this fine detailed print that would take hours to read and then just tell the landowner something completely different to get them to sign on the dotted line. It’s rediculous and around here with as many natives to the area that enjoy hunting like I do outfitting is just not needed.

A: I guess they all liked the movies of the rich counts or dukes of Europe riding with their 20 hounds out to a hunt on their land before returning home to their inherited castle. Ahh, a return to medieval times. We can all look forward to the next revolution, eh Jacques?

Q: What is better black bear or deer hunting?
castle-creek-outfitters.com

A: If you want to come home with something, deer hunting, since there are a lot of deer compared to the number of bears available for hunting. If you want more meat for you shot, then bear, since they are generally bigger. If you just like sitting in the woods in the cold then either will work just fine.

Q: Mule Deer hunt in Utah?
I am going to Utah next Oct. for a mule deer hunt and my outfitter said are shots will be between 200-600 yards.I am taking a 7mm but not sure what grain of bullet to take. Please help.I also have three openings if anyone is interested.

A: I am a very good shot and experienced hunter, who knows what a 500 yard mule deer looks like in the dancing 9X crosshairs. I would not expect to make a humane kill without the very best of a bench rest type situation, accurate laser rangefinder data, and plenty of time to make the shot. But even then the slightest breeze easily makes a heart hit into a hams hit at that distance. Is the 600 yards a typo? I hope so, as otherwise such an outfitter has plans of people blasting away at the trees and going home empty-handed.

Q: Canadian hunting trip??
I have a few friends who go to Canada every year to hunt Elk and Whitetail, somewhere near Saskatchewan. They could care less about how much it costs, but I am not so lucky. I would absolutely love to go on a hunting trip like this and plan to one day. Hopefully before the age of 75! I love hunting here in the south, but as everyone knows our deer rarely reach the size of those monsters up north.

I’ve looked online and of course all of those I found “claim” to be the best in the business. Any recommendations on a reasonably priced, reputable and dependable outfitter to check into?

A: What about goin up to like Iowa? Stayin in the states and gettin a big deer.

Q: Hunting guides….please help!?
ok well, its getting to the time in my life where i have o start thinking of what i want to do for a living. and so i’ve thought about it, and i always find myself coming back to the idea of being a hunting guide in colorado.

i’ve lived in colorado my entire life, (never once lived in the city, and when i go there for groceries, i always find myself wanting nothing more than to come back to the wilderness) i enjoy being outside more than anything, i also enjoy hunting very much.

(i dont mean to brag, but this my help my answers)
i am very fit
athletic
have lots of energy, but am calm
polite
down to earth
and not shy around people.

i recently found this websight anbout becoming a hunting guide in colorado, i think its like a class to get you started. its located near a small town called cripple creek, which i live close to and am familier with, so thats good.

so i guess my question is, i want to be a hunting guide in colorado, how do i get started, (kind of a unusual question i know but..) about how much money do guides in colorado make. what is a good outfitter that i can try to work for, or would it be better to make my own company? here is the link i was telling you about.

http://www.guideschool.com/

and also my grandpa and grandmother live just down the road from me, and they have a HUGE area of beautiful land that i know better than the back of my hand that is packed with elk and deer. would that be any help?

please no rude comments, only helpful answeres! thank you.
and my grandpa also has a bunch of horses that i grew up around so i am a good rider too. the reason i said that was i though that some guided hunts are on horseback.
also i am a decent cook, and have a pretty good sense of wildewrness survival.

A: Great choose in a career, there a lot of money to be made for the right person.
First of all you made a good choose to attend a school to better hone your skills (Or at least you’ll have a ticket to prove your skills) as a outdoors-men and guide.
Things you will learn : Navigation, First Aid, Tracking skills, Basic horse care (trimming/shoeing, packing), customer relations and more.

The school I’m attending (Next spring) has a job placement program when you graduate, when you pick a school see if they have a program like that. The guiding business is a growing business, so the guide school your looking at may do the same thing.
I’d try and find a job and work in the field for a while just to get some hands on experience, to get a feel of how the business works and meet some clientele (The more contacts you can make the better). Then I would start my own business

Good Luck with your search and I hope you become successful as a guide

Q: can anyone tell me or show me where to hunt in us ?
id like to hunt elk , mule deer , hogs , aligator , big white tail . without having to pay outragouse outfitter prices . Thanks for any help .

A: sounds like your on the right track! dont know much about it, but i do know that in life you must find something you love to do and stick with it! taxidermy would be another study to add to the guiding, the more you can offer the better. also know that cabelos offers some higher end guide sevices and i would wait on offering hunting on your ancestors land until you know more and can draw up some contracts for your own buisness. wish you success .

Q: Need some deer hunting tips can you help?
Need some tips on hunting whitetails in Ky.

A: When deer hunting always check which way the wind is blowing. The reason is so that the deer will not smell your scent on the air currents. If they do smell your scent they will turn around and leave or bed down. They might bed down and watch you for as long as you stay at your stand. Always place your stand down wind of the place where you expect to see deer.

If you hunt from a tree stand carry an empty plastic bottle with a good sealing type lid. When nature calls, just use the plastic bottle. It will save you a trip down the tree. You shouldn’t leave your scent around your stand area because the deer will smell it and they won’t come anywhere near your stand.

Other tips can be found accessing the links in the source section.

Hope this helps.

Q: Can anyone help me with some deer hunting tips in southeastern pennsylvania?
i’ve been going out to my treestand about 6 or 7 times. i go in the mornings and in the evenings i put food out and everything but i havnt even seen a deer. i just moved my stand so im hoping to see a buck with these last few days of archery season.

A: Baiting for Deer is illegal, and a violation of the Game Laws.* What is your address I am sure the area Wildlife Conservation Officer for your District would like to talk to you.* It is illegal in Pennsylvania.*

Q: Any body no hunting tips on deer.im looking for more serious tips?
any body got exellent tips on deer hunting.i no all the basics and dont tell me about moon phases cus i got my info on that.

A: Yeah — practice practice practice with your firearm…. Remember this. When an opportunity to shoot a deer arises will he be thru some brush? Up a hill? down a hill? across a ravine. Will you have to fire standing up? kneeling? leaning against a tree? over a big rock? Practice not just at a range under ideal conditions. Practice out in the field…….

Q: I need Deer Hunting tips about Peeing?
Deer Season for shotgun starts next weekend in indiana, and i am needing some tips on the best way to pee. Last year i went in a bottle but i think they can smell it. Does anyone have any other tips.

A: it’s best to take care of that be fore you leave camp, but if your setting all day.do the bottle trick.use a good cover scent.a real strong pine cover scent works well for me[be- a- tree pine].or fox urine coon etc..put your bottle in a zip lock bag..but hey my wife and her freind have pee’d under our condo[thats what we call our stand]read books texing going on ,laughing etc.. and have taken more deer than i have this season…so hey…

Q: can some one give me deer hunting tips?
i am going to hunt in bath county ky, a place called salt lick next saturday. any tips for that area and time of year would be helpful.

A: Like previously stated the ruts not in yet and the bucks may still be together. They should be feeling the rut and fighting a bit. You might want to keep an eye on the main trails, food and water sources, corners of fields. Rattling one in could work well so I’d try it, but gently not a full blown street brawl. They should be trying to sort out dominance pretty soon.

Good Luck

Q: Does anyone have any good general deer hunting tips?

A: Use a good scent control. The key is not to attract deer but rather not to scare them away by your stink. Also don’t over use calls. Deer will get very wary if you are constantly bleating and grunting.

Q: deer hunting tips needed?
tell me all your tips to hunt deer and anything related to deer and hunting

A: Lots of tips here.
1. If your hunting from a tree stand, make sure you practice the one shot your going to take. Only shoot the deer if its where you practiced. If you don’t, you risk injuring the animal, which is a terrible thing to do.
2. Shot placement is also a very big factor. If your hunting with a rifle, aim straight through the shoulder. With a bow, aim right behind the shoulder.
3. Luring the deer.
Take chopped apples and put in a bag. Add syrup. Close bag and shake. dump where you practiced to shoot.
4. Make sure your hunting legally.
5. Make sure you know how to field dress a deer.
6. Place a tree stand by a deer trail. If there arent any good trees around for one, cut a trail to the best tree there is for one in 50 feet or so, and the deer will use this trail. Trust me, it works from experience.

Have fun.

A: This is an enormous question, which I have already sought to answer in a big series of articles as you describe, except it’s for the USA. I am assuming that most of it will cross over. It’s all downloadable, with a right click, etc. My website needs you to type into your browser’s cleared upper address register, http://www.oldhunterrumors.com/ , and hit enter. Or just click on the blue stuff. Give the points to someone who has tips specifically for Aussies. Regards, Larry.

Q: Deer hunting tips? Rainy weather and deer hunting? Tips?
I’ve just started to hunt, but unfortunately my grandfather (who was an avid hunter) died a decade ago. I was a little boy when I had the chance to go with him, but my parent were going through a divorce so something like that didn’t appeal to me I guess. Now I am 23 years old and trying to learn on my own because something about hunting really relaxes me and brings me joy.

Firstly, what are some good calls? Do deer calls even work? Scents? Which are the best? What websites can I order these things from where I can find them at a relatively cheap price? Weather tips would be real nice as well (is it ok to hunt in drizzle to light rian?)! As well as any deer behavior tips someone could help me with. I hunt with a .308 savage.

Thanks!

A: good calls: all will work some of the time; nothing works all the time when deer hunting. Personally, I like calls from Primos. And yes, they do work…sometimes

Scents: Stick with namebrands. Code Blue, Tinks and scents from Wildlife Research Center are some I have had success with. But again, nothing works all the time.

Cabela’s is not always cheapest, or even close sometimes, but they turn alot of merchandise so you don’t need to worry about getting scents that are 2-3 years old. And it does make a difference. They also will have a large assortment of calls.

Light rain and overcast is one of my favorite times to hunt. But I like to be out whenever possible.

Trial and error really comes into play with any deer hunting. Good luck and welcome to the ‘club’

Q: Your best deer hunting tips for a novice rifle hunting alone?
My second year hunting and still looking for my first deer. No one in my family hunts and my friends who hunt prefer drinking or video games, and both make it impossible to wake them up in the morning!

So I’ve been out every day this week in the vast clearcuts that are only a 25min drive from my home. I scouted in advance of the season and found many many tracks and well worn trails. It seems they are everywhere I could possibly look!

I’ve sat in the same spots all day long and not seen a single deer. I’ve been as quiet and still as possible, washed my clothes in baking soda, sprayed my boots with the scent remover, I always hunt into the wind, although it has been gusting and changing directions a lot this week.

Anyways, I’m willing to put the time in this season. Should I just keep doing what I’m doing? I thought I was on the right track, but 6 full days of hunting close to all those tracks and not a glimpse of a deer, and I’m starting to doubt myself. I have tags for a doe or a buck.

Any tips from those with experience would be greatly appreciated.

BTW I’m in Northwestern Ontario, and supposedly we have a deer problem!

A: You need to hunt smarter. Find rubs, where bucks rub the velvet off their antlers on trees. Mineral licks, where deer go for salt.

Find a natural path for them, where they are confined. A narrow stand of woods, connecting two larger wooded areas. A ravine, or stream bed.

Eventually you will have success. Don’t give up.

Wait for the right shot. If you wound the first animal you see, you will regret it for the rest of your life. There is a good article in this months ‘Field and Stream’. Subscribe, and your hunting will improve.

Q: What are some tips to ground deer hunting with a shotgun?
I’m hunting in unfamiliar woods, and I’m just looking for helpful hints.

-How to decide where a good place to sit is?
-How to read my surroundings?
-Are the trails leading into the woods or leaving the woods?
-etc. Etc. Etc.

A: find the trail that looks like it’s is traveled the most look for fresh tracks dropping scraped rubs and find you a downed tree about 20-40 yards from it with the wind in your favor and crawl in it and wait hopefully it will pay off just look for the signs that deer are present in the area bucks will follow the does they will most likely take the same trails frequently unless disturbed they might get skittish for a bit

good luck

Q: Deer hunting tips?
I have decided to go deer hunting for the first time in a few years since I have moved. The problem is, I don’t know the area I am hunting real well or where the deer will likely be like I did in the past. I thought about doing a push with a companion or going on my own in the middle of the day to look around and pick a spot until evening. Where are some good spots to wait or look?

A: Dont push the area until you have given it a chance . I would slowly still hunt the area, start at 9 am or so first, with the wind in your face. Look for runways, edges, creek crossings. Look for thick nasty cover. Stay out of the cover area. Scrapes and rubs wont tell you much now..The rut has slowed ( scrapes are not being used). Look for runways heading or coming out of the thick area, ( sit down wind from these travel routes) if there isnt a thick area, the deer probably arent bedding in there. Maybe the woodlot is a transitional area between food sources..Most importantly give it a chance before you push it. Good Luck, let me know how you do.
PS I would use a estrus doe bleat, some bucks are still desperate searching out does that have not been bred yet. But be still, bucks responding to that call, are on full alert.

Q: white-tail deer hunting tips?
i been hunting for about 6 years but i am always looking for some new tips. you got any secrets you like, and want to share let me know

A: I have a few. Scent elimination is very important as said above. You’ve got to remember your entire wardrobe when doing this. Remember your socks, gloves, hats, masks, thermals, boots etc. I store my clothing in a rubbermaid bin away from kitchen and garage smells. I also add oak and cedar twigs, (use the twigs and leaves of the most abundant trees in your area) and leaves to the bin. Wash your clothes in at least scent free, non UV reflecting detergent. I start my clothes in the dryer and hang them outside to finish drying. I keep my boots outside until about 30 minutes before I put them on. Then for each layer of clothes, I use scent eliminator.
Way before season starts, I start scouting and watching the area that I plan to hunt. I use a camera to see what’s in there. Then way outside the area I sit and listen and try and pattern when the deer is there. I am not a horn hunter, in fact I prefer to harvest does. I watch to see if the bucks are with or running the does, the maturity level of the bucks to determine what stage of the rut they are in. Continue to watch all the way up to the hunt.
My favorite time to hunt is in the morning. I like to get to the place I have chosen to hunt very early. Sometimes up to 1 1/2 hours before sun up. The reason for this, to let any scent of me going to my stand or blind a chance to dissipate and also to listen for any activity.
I carry a cellphone with me, I keep it on vibrate, but just in case something goes wrong I have somewhat of a chance to call for help. I take water to drink but I don’t normally take anything to eat. But the Realtree gum helps with the stomach growls. I always try and get the best nights sleep I can whenever I go out so I’m not tired.
I keep a colapsable deer trolly in my truck in case I have to drag a deer out quite a distance. Save a lot on the back!
I always unload my firearm when entering or leaving my stand for safety. Then load it again once I get to the ground just in case.
I try and build several ground blinds from branches, etc. to accomodate shifting wind conditions and try to keep them free from leaves to eliminate noise from crunching when moving around. In a regular ground blind, I stuff the leaves around the bottom to help even more with odor elimination.
In tree stands, I put nylon fish netting around the bottom of it to keep my feet from making noise and keep my boots from freezing to the metal when it’s wet and cold and for extra traction. The netting doesn’t hold water like the felt ones they sell.
I thought of a couple of others. After the rut is over, rattling or using a mature buck grunt sometimes does more harm than good. Hormones are no longer raging and deep mature grunt calls tend to have deer scrabbling the other way, what I have found is more effective is trying a doe and fawn bleat. I have also had some success after the rut with “C’mere Deer” which in Missouri is not considered bait.
I do these things whether bow, muzzleloading or rifle hunting.
That’s a few I have, hope they help.

Q: What is an affordable deer hunting rifle and where can i get it?
I need an affordable deer rifle to buy for next season. i also need to know where I can find one online.

A: Mossberg 100-ATR chambered in .270, 308 or 30-06…..

Some Walmarts that have a gun counter usually have these in stock…..

http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=8&section=products

These are decently accurate and not too expensive…. 2 Of my friends just purchased 2 of these chambered in 30-06 for $321 scope included…..

These are an inexpensive decent economy rifle — You wont win a target competition with the 100-ATR but will have absolutely no problems taking deer at reasonable ranges……

Q: Whats the best deer hunting rifle for me?
I am aware that deer season is a ways away but i want to get a good start on things. I am a beginner hunter, and I mean as in ‘I have never hunted in my life’ beginner, and I do not know which rifle would be best for me. I hear the .30-06 is a great choice, but there are a few other people who tell me otherwise, and I would just like the opinion of the world to help me out, thanks!

A: It’s like asking what shoe size you wear. It’s mostly personal preference and what “fits” you. Try a few and see what you like. Get a feel for what’s on the market and do some shopping around. The more guns you look at, the better your chances will be of making a good choice.

Q: Im a 16 year old who is looking for a deer hunting rifle for really cheap whats a cheap rifle and Caliber?
Im looking for a rifle that can kill a deer and is between $100-300.I don’t care if its used or new but i would prefer new.My parents are willing to buy it as long as i have the money so no problems there.

A: i’m 18, so since your 16 i’m guessing that we’re somewhat the same ’size’ unless your taller than the average 16 year old- wasn’t wanting to sound rude

here are 2 guns that i’m very confident that you’ll be able to shoot with no problem (they both will knock a deer down if the placement is right, that goes with any caliber): a 243 or a 308
both are well-known calibers and the kick isn’t too bad and they’re not too expensive either.

i’m 5′1 (a girl) and since i have no problem shooting those guns, then i don’t think the recoil will bother you too much

no matter what kind of caliber and brand you get, make sure the gun is fitted properly to you- you may need to get a gun smith to fit it for you but this is a good rule of thumb that my shotgun coach taught me:
hold the butt of the gun where your elbow bends, and if you can easily reach the trigger with your tigger finger then the gun fits you properly.
if your trigger finger is over the trigger a lot, then the gun is too small for you and you can get it lengthened.
if your trigger finger doesn’t reach the trigger or you have to strain to reach it, then the gun is too big, and you can get it shortened.

also, a wooden stock will absorb more recoil than a synthetic (plastic) one will, so, if your recoil ’shy’ any, that would suit you best but if your going to be doing a lot of walking while hunting, then a synthetic stock will be the best choice because they are lighter than a wooden stock

some good ‘brands’ to look into are: Remington, Winchester, Weatherby, Ruger and Browning, there are also a LOT of other brands but those are the ones that i know best.

also, if your able to, shoot a few guns that some family members or trusted friends have (if they have a caliber your intrested in) to see if you’d like that type

Q: What’s the best all around Hunting rifle for hunting deer in New England?
I’m looking to get into deer hunting in New England and am looking for a good all around hunting rifle, I know hand guns, but sadly, very little about rifles. I’m looking for something reliable, with enough power to take down a deer but not fling me out of a tree stand or anything. Bolt action prefered… Thanks

A: Ranges in woods hunting in New England tend to be short, and often the deer you want is behind just enough foliage to screw up a modern high speed bullet. The Marlin 1895 model series in 45-70 has the dual purpose offered in that the 300 grain JHP loads intended for the old Trapdoor Springfields have modest recoil and aren’t bothered by a few leaves. Also that the African loads available will take Kodiac bear reliably, and are used annually by a big club on African Safari on Big 5. The dreams people have of taking game with long shots in the next county over, with high power small or medium bore weapons, are easily dispelled by the 8 inch paper plate trick, where you see how far away you can actually hit a deer’s vitals at. Good target shot that I am, under field conditions, I avoid initial shots past 250 yards even out west, as simply not a humane risk. Of course, eventually something will cause a marginal hit, and then your strategy for the given terrain either is or is not effective. In heavy woods, a good brush-busting round like the 45-70 often beats long range capability, in putting down wounded game on the run. Regards, Larry.

Q: what is a good cheap deer hunting rifle?
I’m looking to buy a deer rifle but i dont want to spend much money on it what would be a good cheap brand, and caliber

A: Go to the local gun shops and find yourself a nice 30-30 lever action. It’s the classic deer rifle and will last several lifetimes.

Q: Is there a decent deer hunting rifle for about $250?
I am looking into buying a deer hunting rifle. I have about $250 to spend, is there any decent rifle i can get for that amount of money? If there is please tell me. Thanks!!

A: Decent is a taste that differs from person to person. For low budget hunting for deer I would say by a Mosin Nagant, A surplus rifle cost anywhere from $90-$$140 dollars these days. I got mine, for $100, nice little “it’s been cut down” truck rifle and brush gun, however the 7.62×54R round it shoots is around 20 for $20 for lead nose hunting rounds, last time I went to Big 5. It’s basically as Russian 30-06, basically I said. I find that a decent gun for deer hunting, but everyone has their own taste.

Also another budget friendly rifle is the H&R rifles “Handi-Rifles” Here’s a link for 7mm-08 http://www.galleryofguns.com/genie/default.aspx?item=sb2-708, the 243 Win is sold out there. They’re break action, single shot guns. They break down and are fine guns. I own several of them, .22, .223, 243 Win, 270, 7mm-08 and they all work wonderfully.

http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/youth.asp

Skill is more important in hunting than your firearm. Many deer have fallen and been killed even by the Not Legal for deer.22LR round. Shot placement is more important than caliber.

You can find plenty of used rifles that fit your budget at Gunbroker.com, not advertising for them, just simply giving you a site.

Mack 9 is right too, for around, if not, $130 dollars they will take your receiver and fit another barrel for it.

Q: What is the best deer hunting rifle?
Im looking at getting my first rifle. I was looking at a savage or benelli but I am not sure. What is the best, affordable rifle? Im looking for something with accuracy, durability, and preferably a lower recoil.

A: I like the Savage rifles not only for their accuracy and low price but for the many options and calibers they come in. I like 308, 7-08, 270, and 208. It will be up to you which one you can shoot the best. They all probably can out-shoot you but some have more recoil than others so you need to shoot one of each caliber to see which allows you to hit easily with the lest amount of recoil.
Sarge

Q: What is the best deer hunting rifle for a 14 year old?
I want a Remington or a Winchester or a Browning.
Thank you so much!
wvhunter129

A: The best I honestly believe is a Remington 700 bolt action in a 243 caliber. You don’t have much recoil at all out of the 243 and yes a 243 will harvest deer. You just have to place your shot accordingly. Zero in the rifle and get use to it.

This is how I trained my two boys to hunt. Knowing your game and where to place your shot for a good, clean and ethical harvest.

Q: what is the best rifle for coyote and deer hunting?
i have been looking for the best rifle for coyote hunting but can also be used as a deer rifle. thanks to anyone who answers

A: IMO a 30-06 or .270 is going to be your best bet for deer and yotes. I shoot a Remington 700 .270 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15X40 which is a perfect deer and yote setup for me.

Q: Where can i find a good deer hunting rifle for a good low price..Any suggestions?
And what would be the price?

A: Go to a big box sporting goods store…. Most areas have at least one around — Also check out Walmart…. Not all of there stores have a gun counter but several do…..

Look for a Mossberg 100-ATR, a Remington 770 or a Stevens model 200…… Consider one chambered in .270, 308 or 30-06….. Consider no other cartridge offerings…. The idea is to get a rifle chambered in a common chamber that’s available on every sport shop shelf in North America…. .270, 308 or 30-06…… The .270 is a perfect deer cartridge…. The 30-06 is very popular and is powerful – a little too powerful for deer in my opinion….. I happen to like the .308. Its got plenty of power, reach and when not hunting bulk ammo is available cheap for some cheap target practice time…..

Q: I need a deer hunting rifle that is easy for a woman to use.?
My arms are too short and I find it really hard to hold up my husband’s 270. The weight wouldn’t be such a major problem if it wasn’t so long. I used to use a 16 gauge shotgun for hunting with no problem. Any suggestions?

A: I use a .30-06 and I’m a woman on the smaller side (120 lbs)…also, don’t be afraid of bigger guns just cause you’re a woman…women can handle big guns too, I’m living proof.

Q: What is a good deer hunting rifle caliber and big game rifle?

A: For Deer~ .243, .270, or .30-06

Bigger Game~ .300 win mag is nice

Q: a good rifle for deer hunting?
im planning on deer hunting next year and need a good deer rifle that can take down a deer and wont kick hard? is there one?

A: What people don’t realize here is that smaller weight(GRAIN) for caliber kicks harder than the heavier weight. It has to do with momentum. Lets say the 243 with 80 grns at 3350 and 11 ft bls of kick compared to the 100 grain at 2950 with 9.7 of kick. Even tho the weight is lighter it kicks more. Why? Because the bullet is exiting faster out the muzzle than the heavier one pushing back harder on the shoulder. You want notice recoil much in up to 280 Rem caliber. So your good in 243,7mm-08,308,30/30, 25/06, 270 and 280 if your worried about recoil. They are all mild mannered.

Q: What is a good deer hunting rifle with a scope and where is the best place to buy a used one?

A: What do you plan to hunt? What will the conditions be? If you are hunting white tail in the eastern woods, your needs will be completely different from someone hunting mule deer out west. If this will be your one and only rifle, I would suggest going with something like a 30-06 if you expect to be afforded the opportunity for hunting for many types of game. If you are sticking to woody areas where shots are short, look at a Marlin in 30-30 or 35 Remington. Various brands make good rifles, and what you look for depends wholly on your budget. If you are on the lower end, look for a used Savage as they are uniquely poised at a great price/accuracy point. Another budget brand rifle I have had great luck with is the Howa 1500. Howa is the manufacturer of the Weatherby Vanguard line of rifles. You also might take a look at the Vanguard. If you are looking to buy used, cruise through the local pawn shops. If you don’t know what you are looking for, take someone with you who has experience buying used firearms so you don’t get hosed. Good luck hunting.

Q: deer hunting lease in FLorida?
I am looking for hunting land to manage and take the deer population to a new level in the state of Florida. I need to find land to hunt and lease in the Central part of Florida for not much money. Me and 2-3 other ethical hunters are willing to help with all fencing, maintaince and any other needs if wanted. We can contact owner when we will be entering or leaving property and show tags and game for what we have taken. We are willing to treat the land as if it were our own for we are not fortunate enough to have our own land to treat in such manner. Im currently on a lease in North Florida but with the cost of gas and the rise in the cost of other things I am no longer able to afford the cost of hunting. I have looked into several other leases in central Florida but the cost is between $2,500.00 and $5,000.00 per year and that way to much for me.Any people interested please contact me via email at jsmmmh@netzero.com . Thanks for taking the time to read this and please consider. Jeremy
Ok lets start out by saying if you dont have an answer to my question keep your comments to yourself. I dont need anyone telling me about ethics and high fences. I never mentioned high fences all I mentioned was help with fences. Most if not all property in Florida is fenced due to cattle. So like I aid before keep your coments to yourself.

A: I would say, that your chance of finding something like that, would very slim, to none.
there MIGHT be some land in the panhandle, but there again, it would be doubtful.
about the only thing that you may be able to do, is check with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission & see if they might be able to help you out.

GOOD LUCK

Have no idea if this would work, but you also might try the Florida Cattlemens association or the agriculture extention office in the counties aroung where you are intrested.
Who knows, you may just find something.

again, good luck

Q: deer hunting?
i am going deer hunting on my buddies lease in 2 weeks and i want to make sure i have everything i need. what do i need. i have my hunting lisense already. and my camo. its going to be in south texas so its not going to be extremely cold.

A: I live in Texas, so I can say for certain that you need to take water with you. Whatever other gear you take, you will get thirsty. Hope you have fun and fill your tag.

Q: west virginia deer hunting lease?
I am looking for hunting land to manage and take the big buck population to a new level in the state of west virginia. I need to find land to hunt and lease in the southern part of west virginia. Me and 2-3 other ethic hunters are willing to help with all fencing, farming and any other needs if wanted. We can contact owner when we will be entering or leaving property and show tags and game for what we have taken. We are willing to treat the land as if it is gold for we are not fortunate enough to have our own land to treat in such manner. Any people interested please contact me via email at justincsx@yahoo.com . thanks for taking the time to read this and please consider. Justin

A: Justin,
I live out of state but own 160 acres near Hurricane, WV I am currently working on food plotting and QDMA to increase the potential for big healthy deer in the area. Several of my neighbors do not hunt there land. I have been thinking of approaching them in order to expand my plan (so far the wallows and plots across my property are working well) but I do not have the resources to patrol the properties on a regular basis. I’m sure you are aware that many locals to not respect signs. If you are interested in some mutually beneficial plan let me know.

Q: Deer hunting lease in oklahoma?
i have 1000acres in southern oklahoma and i am going to lease i out for deer season how much should i charger its about two weeks thanks

A: By watching Craigslist in the Tulsa area, a lot of the leases around here bring $1500 for year round hunting access. With 1000 acres you could easily put 10 to 12 people on it without any problems. If you were only doing it through deer season $250-$500 if you have good numbers of deer available.

Q: Anyone know about deer leases in North Texas?
I have over 100 acres in North Texas that I want to lease out for deer hunting season. This land is a wooded area with weeds and has white tail deer, dove, quail and all kinds of varmits to hunt. Does anyone know how much leases are going for? Does anyone want to lease it?
My land is in Forestburg, Texas Montague County and yes it’s still available.
The land has a main road that you can access. It has lots of trees, grass and so forth. Whitetail deer, turkey, dove, quail and varmits. You could camp but as of right now the water well is not hooked back up yet but I am trying to get that done. It’s just 110 acres of nothing but hunting grounds.

A: Depending how far north and what county. Also the terrain, roads, access, and utilities that may be provided. I lease to three in west texas (Kinney) for $950 a year each on 130 acres. They are self sufficient.

Q: Does anyone know of any hunting leases in louisiana or hunting clubs ?
Looking for leases or farmers that have a hog problem or deer problem to take my son hunting primarly Bow hunting to get him started

A: I don’t know where you live, but there are a ton of great Wildlife Management Areas in the state. If you’re up north, Jackson-Bienville WMA has a huge hog problem. If you’re further south, Pearl River WMA has a possibly worse hog problem than JB. Either would be a good place to hunt hogs, I’m not sure about deer. Some use the lottery system for hunts, but I’m pretty sure you can go on either WMA anytime for hogs, as long as it’s outside of rifle season for deer. Check out the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries website for more info.

Q: TWO people looking for deer hunting lease within 50mi.. OF WILMINGTON NC.?

A: These are the web pages for the closest places I could find, well over 50 miles from New Hanover County though:

Q: How can I find a deer lease in Texas?
I am trying to find options for a Deer Lease in Texas. I live in Dallas but I am willing to travel a few hours to get somewhere. I’d prefer a lease where me and family can all lease out together, not get on a lease with a bunch of strangers who happens to have an empty deer-stand. I don’t wanna just go out and buy some land, as I’m looking for somewhere that’s established for deer hunting. Does anyone know of a website or anything that lists such leases, their availability, and price?

A: There is a magazine that has deer leases listed, it’s called Hunting Leases Magazine. It has mostly Texas leases listed in it.

Q: Where can I go to find a hunting lease in Southeast Texas, preferably around Trinity?
My fiance and I want to lease some property for deer hunting this coming season. Anyone know where I can go to find a lease around the above areas? We don’t want to spend a fortune either. Thanks!

A: you do not have to call the nra. geesh. talk about over kill. just simply call the chamber of commerce.they will also know about places not listed.

Q: Deer hunting in Dallas/Forth Worth area?
I’m looking into getting on a new deer lease about an hour south of Forth Worth (Cleburne area). I have hunted for several years in the hill country but I am unfamiliar with this part of Texas. Can anyone tell me what kind of deer I can expect in this neck of the woods? Thanks.

A: Around Cleburne you won’t find as many deer as you would around San Saba or Brady. Just west and south of the city there are some decent sized deer. The state park has several deer on it and they come and go to the surrounding areas. I have some distant cousins who hunt just past the park and they take some decent size deer each year. I’ve seen some nice bucks feeding by the hospital area too. The biggest problem with hunting in Johnson county is the rural development. 20 years ago there were quail and deer from Cleburne through the Goatneck area all the way to the Brazos River. With all the ” ranchette” communities going in alot of the wildlife is moving out. Also you’ll find some feral hogs in a few areas of Johnson county. It is a one buck county and depending on the next session may have some new doe restrictions. Check the TPWD website for more details.

Q: What are some good questions to ask when looking for a deer lease?
I have never hunted much and have never had my own lease. I am hunting with a bow and want to hunt white tail deer. I don’t really know how to look for legitimate places to hunt and when I do I don’t know what to ask my potential land owner to make sure I am treating him right and not getting ripped off at the same time. Any advice will help.

A: If you are thinking about leasing you need to know what the going rate is in your area. The best way is to get on the website of the various timber companies that operate in your state. These companies will all have land listed to lease. In my area that runs about $5 to $7 an acre. Parcels of land can run from 30 acres to 3000 acres or better. This may be your best bet to get some property that you just wish to bowhunt on.It is hard to find private property in my state that is not already leased. But the timber companies Have countless acres to lease. You may want to talk to a few like-minded individuals and lease several hundred acres. On the websites of the timber companies they provide a brief description of the property along with maps that show you where they are located. Which ever route you take, I wish you good luck and a successful hunting season.

Q: Is carrying survival gear for deer hunting silly?
I am a city slicker. Consequently, I don’t hunt without a GPS, compass, map, food, down bag, and a light bivaoc shelter.
This amounts to a good sized 45 pound day pack. My hunting buddies are rather annoyed by this, and point out we are never more than a couple hours walk from the car. I am terrified of stepping off the road unprepared. Are my fears unfounded?

A: Packing survival gear into the woods is just about as dumb as having auto insurance, or a fire extinguisher in your house.

Just remind you hunting buddies that you are the one humping the pack not them, so lay off!

However, I do believe you can probably dial things down a bit. You can leave the tent and sleeping bag off the list and substitute an 8′X8′ tarp and some rope and unless you are hiking into cold, snowy mountain terrain, you can probably substitute a good wool blanket and a space blanket for the sleeping bag.

BTW, if your hunting partners are dumb enough to go into the woods without either compass or GPS, I suggest you find new hunting partners.

I predict that barring a major accident, or a sudden and unexpected blizzard, you will never need the sleeping bag or tent. Your GPS and compass will ensure that you don’t get lost. I can’t make the same prediction for your friends.

Let me give you a for instance, and you might want to tell your friends about it. Many years ago, my old friend Bryant Grace and another fellow hiked far into the swamps to fish in a secluded spring.. On the way out, they were fogged in. They ended up spending a damp and miserable night huddling around a campfire with no food other than some crackers and a couple of unseasoned, half-cooked fish. If that could happen to an experienced outdoorsman in warm weather, hunting in the snow can be disastrous.

Keep up the good habits!

Doc

Q: I really messed up and want to get rid of all the deer hunting gear I bought?
I already had a Remington 700 SS 24″ 7mm Rem Mag and someone convinced me to use that for deer hunting this coming season so I bought an expensive scope, 100 rounds of ammo, an expensive scope mount, and a new cloth case. I was this close to spending $1000 on a new rifle too but I canceled the deal at the last minute. I could probably sell the scope and mount on eBay, but what about the ammo? I tried to sell the rifle before to two different gun shops and an online auction but no one would buy it at what I thought was a very reasonable price.

A: Got a bar of soap? How about a towel? (Because you’re going to need both for that bath you’re about to take!) Selling ammunition can, also, be tricky and is fraught with numerous liabilities for which you might be held accountable later on.

If you’re unable to locate a local buyer who might pay a better price for that 700, then, you’re going to be forced to either keep the rifle, or offer it for sale on sites like: GunBroker.com, GunsAmerica.com, or AuctionArms.com.

Better than this I cannot tell you. Well, you could keep the rifle and shoot it for recreation on weekends; but, from the way your question is posed, I kind ‘a doubt that’s a possibility – huh.

Q: What hunting gear should l get?
Ok,so lve got $800 dollars saved up and want to buy new hunting gear for deer and elk season. What should l get?

A: Well you can start with a gun or a bow, unless you have one. If you looking for camo go to bass pro or cabelas and pick a camo design, but if you want to be more successful, spend the extra money for sent lock

Q: Help with deer hunting gift?
Okie dokie, I have a budget of $150 for my boyfriend’s birthday present. He is really in to deer hunting so I’m leaning in that direction for a theme.. But I don’t know what to actually get him. What do you think? A combination of things would work too, but I’m clueless about hunting gear.. He mostly hunts with his deer rifle but he is considering getting a nice bow this year. Again $150 budget… Any tips?? Thanks guys!!!! :o )
I just had another idea! What about if I got some camouflage lingere for me to wear on the night of his birthday? Would that be a decent gift?

A: Hunting jacket (water proof, wind proof)
Hunting knife ( buck,kabar,SOG,etc)
Hunting boots (Rocky ,Columbia, etc.) (water proof)
hunting pack
Binoculars ( Leupold,Nikon,bushnell, 8×42,10×42) (water proof)
Ammo
Camo

Q: What gear do i need to go dear hunting for the first time?
I’m 26 and I’m about to go deer hunting for the frist time i have no gun or bow or anything let this guy know thanks

A: what ever weapon you can legally hunt with a sleeping bag if staying the night camo regardless and Patience

Q: Hunting Gear???????????????????????????????
I have a guy friend who is into deer hunting I want to buy him something for xmas but I don’t know the first thing about hunting I don’t have much money so what should I buy him?

A: socks, gloves, flashlight, sent killer products, hats, hot hands{hand warmers}, ammo, magazine subscription. little things like these are inexpensive and usefull no matter how many he has. if in doubt buy a gift card, you cant go wrong!

Q: what is better starting out on deer hunting, to process your own deer or pay a processor each time?
Im about to start probably not this season but next season deer hunting Im trying to figure out the best way to keep this endeavors price down. If you had the money and space available what would you do and why. Would you buy you own gear necessary to process your own deer and make your own sausage, like a sausage press and meat grinder. Would you buy a lifetime hunting and fishing license in Texas? Just trying to do this the financially smart way and want to hear others opinions. Thank you

A: Most of us do it ourselves.

It saves time for me rather than driving it 45 miles to the closest packing house then back when they are done. I don’t really want to spend the money any way.

I can have one done in about 1 hour. That is skint and cut into smaller about quart size pieces. I do the smaller cuts when I thaw the meat each time I cook.

This is not rocket science just remember to cut the steaks against the grain as often as you can. It is hard to mess up.

I use Ziploc freezer bags or vacuum pack it. Freezer bags are good if you eat it fairly quickly. Vacuum packing is better if you leave it in the freezer long enough to get freezer burnt.

I don’t really care for deer burger. Sausage is good but I don’t usually bother. My family loves deer fried with onions. We make stews a lot. Jerky is my kids favorite, you can’t stop eating it.
Anything you can do with beef you can do with deer.

Q: hunting deer vs. deer car impact?
ok. so i know that deer hunting season is coming, so therefore insurance companies are gearing up for insruance claims for deer/car accidents. so let’s just say, if we can hunt them, which is better eradicating as much deer and leaving them for dead or the buzzards meals, or let them cause thousands of dollars for repairs? in my opinoin, i’d rather eradicate as much deer to resolve the accident issue. other opinions?

A: Despite most people’s perception that the deer population is under threat, their numbers have actually been BURGEONING due to humans driving out natural predators while protecting the deer.

The national deer population has exploded from half a million to 25 million in the past century. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6835501/

We’re even working on birth control for deer: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ws/nwrc/research/reproductive_control/gonacon1rev.pdf

The deer overpopulation is damaging the habitat of birds and harming the bird popultion. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa003&articleID=00047FF0-8A73-1365-897683414B7F4945

I think deer are “pretty” too, but there are just too many of them. City dwellers might not have to personally deal with the impact, but we on the rural fringes have our landscapes and gardens damaged by those “pretty” deer. I’ve been a passenger in a deer collision. The deer bounded up a steep incline to the highway, invisible to those in our car, though people several cars behind could see what was going on and avoid hitting us. It was terrifying.

In my state of Nebraska we have 3,488 collisions with animals (mostly deer) a year; drivers in the neighboring state of Iowa have 8,600 collisions a year. Drivers are trained “Don’t veer for deer,” because attempting to swerve often leads to a more serious accident. (Source: Omaha World Herald, Oct 9, 2007).

I would personally prefer to see far greater population controls put in place. I don’t think that I want my tax dollars going to deer birth control, either. I’m more in favor of increasing numbers of hunting permits, lowering permit price, and controlled culls where the meat is processed and donated to a food bank.

Q: Hunting Rifle Question?
Alright… Here’s the crackdown: I’m 14 years old, and over this coming summer, I’m going to get a job so that next deer season, I can afford to buy myself my rifle, ammunition, and other various hunting gear? Can anyone tell me what kind of rifle would be good for deer hunting? I only like .270 rifles, and I would prefer it to have a wooden stock, and be very reliable/accurate. Price isn’t too much of a factor, just as long as it doesn’t take my dad’s life insurance policy to afford it! Any help would be very appreciated. Also, what kind of cleaning kit would be the best and what kind of hunting backpack would hold a lot of my gear? Thanks… -Garrett

A: excellent choice picking 270

Now, for brands, the big ones are Remington 700, Ruger 77, and Savage 11 and 14.

But basically, all those rifles are going to be quite similar. Buy which one feels best to you, which one is on sale, whatever. The BIGGEST factor is what you choose to chamber it in, and you have already decided to chamber it in 270, which is a great selection.

Regading cleaning kit. The basic rifle kit is made by hoppes, outers, and a bunch of others. Simply choose one for .270, and you will be fine. Something like this
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=480842&t=11082005
Some guys prefer a single solid rod rather than screwing one together out of 3 bits, you can decide that for yourself.

You may also want to consider a “field kit” like this http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=211439&t=11082005 which uses a string to pull the patch through rather than a rod to push it through

I would suggest also planning on purchasing a scope for it. I think the 3-9x is a great multiuse scope. There are brands like Simmons and Tasco that you can get for $50, there are brands like Zeiss and Nikon that go for$500. I think BSA, which usually run about $100 are the best of the cheaper scopes, and Leupold which usually run $200 are best of the “next step up”

Q: Deer Hunting questions?
I’m looking for answers more geared toward Illinois but any info will help

What is the buck to doe ratio in illinois?
How many resident hunters are there and how many non-residental hunters are there
Why is non-resident hunting limited
what is the buck to doe ratio on non-resident hunters, Higher on the buck i would think
what is this about non-residents leasing land and making hunting grounds smaller for residents
What website would be helpful in this area, (dont say the IDNR cause I’ve looked there and it confuses me unless theres a certain page to go to for this info)
Harvest #’s of the 70’s 80’s 90’s 2000’s
Deer killed by Res vs NR

Anything would be helpful

A: This is the same question that you asked again. See your other question for my answer.

Q: I want to Hunt Deer, where do I start?
I’d really like to get into deer hunting, I heard lots of good stuff about their meat and its wonderful taste…Where should I start? Which licenses do I need? What are some of the Laws? Gear/Guns? Are there any deer hunting tour guides to get me started on my first session? Let me know any good websites or anything that can help me get started on hunting deers and eating them..

Thanks!

(Any Trolls / Vegans / Animal Rights Activists / Peta / anything else that doesn’t have anything to do with what I’m asking will get Reported!!)

A: In addition to: (1) the Hunter’s Safety Course AND the hunting license you’ll be qualified for when you pass the final test, (2) the NRA endorsed Firearms Handling and Safety Course you’re going to be smart enough to take, and (3) regular practice with your rifle or shotgun of choice at a local range, you need to know the following information:

Do NOT purchase a firearm until you know what the state’s local hunting regulations are. You’ll, also, need to know the typical topography of the area where you will be hunting. (Shotguns for heavy woods and close-in shots at 40 yards or less; and rifles for longer.) Ask the instructor who teaches the Hunter’s course what he recommends for your area.

Don’t overlook what a tremendous asset magazines like, ‘Outdoor Life’ or, ‘Sports Afield’ can be. I grew up without a father and taught myself to be, ‘better than Boone’ by reading only these magazines and going out in the woods everyday after school.

Many areas have some sort of, ‘partner assisted’ deer hunting programs that will allow you to go out with an experienced deer hunter. Check with, ‘BuckMasters’. You’re right about the venison. Unlike commercial beef, venison isn’t subjected to a force-fed diet of artificial carbohydrates and bromides before it’s slaughtered for human comsumption. By eating more venison and less beef you’ll, probably, put off your first coronary by, at least, 10 years.

Hints:

(1) Carry a daypack with things like: a space blanket, matches, a compass, a coil of rope, some emergency rations, and an area TOPOGRAPHIC map. When you’re hunting locally you don’t need this stuff; but, I used to go on a lot of out-of-state hunting trips; and, one time, I saved myself from a really cold and unpleasant night in the woods by being well-prepared for such an eventuality ahead of time.

(2) Scout! That’s right – Scout! A large part of my deer hunting success came from knowing how deer think, and how they prefer to move. I’d often spend 2 or 3 days cruising through an area before I picked out a couple of places to wait. Look for what they’re eating and how they’re traveling to and from their bedding areas. (Watch southern-facing slopes; in cold weather deer love to bed down on them.)

(3) Learn to recognize the differences between: feeding, travel, and escape trails. The biggest, oldest bucks are going to be on the travel trails the moment the rut starts; and, after opening day, they’ll be using the escape trails.

A drive can always work; but, as the season wears on, deer become more and more nocturnal, and still hunting becomes more and more useful.

Whenever I found sign, I always asked myself, ‘What is, or was, the deer doing here?’ ‘Where did it come from; and where did it go?’ ‘When?’

(4) Everybody knows about the wind; but, learn what thermal air currents are! Generally speaking: ‘Hunt high in the morning’ and, ‘low in the afternoon’.

(5) Be prepared for the kill! Don’t be one of these sissified, ‘cowboy hunters’ who sport big expensive guns and all sorts of fancy gear but haven’t got either the equipment or, ‘the stones’ to properly dress the deer’s carcass and drag it ALL THE WAY out of the woods.

(6) ‘E pluribus Unum’ Here’s a little tip for ya that often yields big results: You don’t need all sorts of fancy scents and calls. Catch up with some common ordinary horse dung. Smear it on the soles of your boots and place a small bag of it near, but not on, your stand.

It’s been my experience that – in the right areas – deer feel safer and frigg ‘in love hanging around near horses. If nothing else, they’re very curious animals; and the smell alone will often bring them in for a peek.

There ya go! This should get you off to a good start.

Q: Where do Britons purchase their hunting equipment and firearms?
Here in Canada, we have large sporting goods stores, and we have numerous gunstores where people can purchase hunting arms such as shotguns and rifles, along with ammunition. Handguns can also be purchased with a license; it is not that difficult to obtain if you do not have a criminal record.

When I go deer, turkey, duck, or elk hunting, I usually have most of my gear already in storage at my house, and if I need to replace something (such as a torn pair of camouflage pants, or a hunting knife), I just drive over to the sporting goods store.

Stores like Canadian Tire also have a good selection of hunting equipment.

Is it mostly the same in the UK? Where do you lot usually purchase your hunting gear? Hunting is very popular across Canada during this time of year, in the fall. Licenses are issued province by province, though.

So for instance if I wish to hunt turkeys in Ontario, I contact the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources instead of the federal government. How does it work in the UK?

A: You buy a gun from a gunsmith such as
http://www.trulockandharris.com/newguns.asp
or

http://www.thomasturners.co.uk/Products/Shooting-Sticks.aspx?gclid=CLO86bP_yp0CFQkwpAodRSvDqw

You can buy your clothes from there or an outfitters such as

http://www.farlows.co.uk/collection.php/category/mens/cPath/2

then you jump in the old jallopy up to the estate and bag a few for the pot

Q: Is it okay to hunt and kill animals with guns and arrows (hunting questions)?
Is it okay to kill animals for sport or for food?

My wife doesn’t like the idea of killing animals. I am okay with it sometimes and sometimes think it is better not to.

I like the idea of having a deer. I don’t have any hunting gear and probably wouldn’t for a while at least a couple of years until I have money to do something like that.

Is it consider murder by any to kill animals?
Should more people go and enjoy hunting from the cities?
How does someone like an armature learn to at first with no experience?

What is the Ultimate purpose of hunting?

Thanks!

A: well ,when this world starts to go crazy after the oil runs out and we have vaporised our cities the hunting for food will be a last resort to survival .

Q: Selfish husband during pregnancy…?
I am three months away from having our first baby. My husband seems to constantly be wanting new toys for his “ultimate man” collection. I keep telling him that its not a good time to buy big ticketed items (such as a 2nd canoe, hunting gear to START deer hunting, etc.). I try and explain to him that it would be best to discuss the idea after the baby is born because our lives are going to change drastically once he is born…but he dismisses that and says that we’ve got the money so why not…Any suggestions on how to help him understand that our lives are about to change and he needs to think about the baby first??

A: that just might be his problem. maybe in his mind he thinks if he doesn’t get it all now then when the baby does come he wont be able to get it. i seriously reccomend seeing a therapist on this one. this needs dealt with professionally. also, maybe he is starting to stress out about the baby and his way of trying to avoid the stress is by splurging and buying new things to make himself feel better. it diesnt mean hes not happy, or excited its just getting closer and he knows that, but if its his first child thats probably all he knows. having a new baby is a new world and he cant ever understand that until hes actually living it…

Q: website for hunting clothes?

Q: west virginia deer hunting lease?
I am looking for hunting land to manage and take the big buck population to a new level in the state of west virginia. I need to find land to hunt and lease in the southern part of west virginia. Me and 2-3 other ethic hunters are willing to help with all fencing, farming and any other needs if wanted. We can contact owner when we will be entering or leaving property and show tags and game for what we have taken. A: Justin,
I live out of state but own 160 acres near Hurricane, WV I am currently working on food plotting and QDMA to increase the potential for big healthy deer in the area.

Q: How do you find hunting property for lease?
My husband and I live in southern Alabama and we are looking for a small bit of property (40 acres- 300 acres) for either he and I to hunt, or for he, myself, and a very few friends to lease for hunting (deer, rabbit, hogs, etc). I have googled “hunting property for lease/ alabama” every way I can think of. Does anyone know of any websites that could help us? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

A: Here are two ways that you can look into. The largest land owners that lease land for hunting in the southern states is the timber companies. For example in my state (Louisiana) Roy O.Martin timber company has 51 different sections to lease this year for hunting ranging from 30 acres to 1700 acres. Find out the companies that operate in Alabama and get on their website. Each company will have their areas listed, a brief description of them, a map showing where they are located at, and how much an acre they charge for leasing it. The second way is to go into your local sporting goods stores and ask the employees if there are any lease openings that you and your husband may get on. Sometimes they will have openings posted on their bulletin boards for you to look at. I wish you the best of luck on your search and tell your husband I think he is an extremely lucky person.
