Q: What caliber rifle should I get for deer hunting?
I live in Virginia and am looking to buy a rifle to hunt deer. It seems the caliber for deer ranges from .243 to the 30-30 at the top end. I want something that will definitely kill the deer but won’t blow my shoulder off at the same time so any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: Before you buy a rifle, make sure you can use one in the area you’ll hunt. Much of VA is shotgun only. If you’re in such an area, a 20 ga will work great if you can use slugs; if buckshot is required, a 12 ga is the better choice. VA is an odd place…I hunted on Quantico a few years, which required slugs and forbade buckshot; right outside the gate it was the opposite, absolutely no slugs, had to buckshot only. Here’s a list of local firearm ordinances that specify rifle/shotgun use for deer: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/regulations/local-ordinances.pdf

If rifles are okay in your area you can’t go wrong with any of the common and popular rifle cartridges, such as .243, 7mm-08, .30-30, etc. Even the more potent rounds such as .270, .308, .30-06, 7mm mag, etc, now have “managed recoil” loads available, so they are within reason too as long as you opt for a mid to heavy weight rifle and a good recoil pad.

VA whitetails aren’t that big on average, so any of the lighter end rounds will work fine. More important is your ability to put a single shot into the vitals. Once there, even a .223 with a proper hunting bullet will work fine.

Q: How can the NAACP say Dog Fighting is no worse then Deer Hunting?
Excuse me,but I lived in the country where the deer population was Big. Once a year you could go deer hunting. Most people I knew ate the deer they killed. How can that compair to someone delibertly killing man’s Best Friend?

A: You ain’t gonna shoot Bambi are ya……………#######

Q: Can I use a Mossberg 590a1 for hunting deer?
I am planning on buying a Mossberg 590A1 model 51668 for deer hunting and home defense. Would this firearm be effective for deer hunting?

A: If you use rifled slugs only at at distances up to 50 yards would I even consider it. It is illegal in some jurisdictions to use shotguns for hunting and mandatory in others like on Long Island NY because of the condensed population in rural areas. Be careful as the 590A1 is a short barrel only 18-20″ the effective distance and accuracy is not as good as would be the case with a longer barrel. My Mossberg 930 12Ga. Semi-Auto is 26″ and has interchangeable barrels. You can find a model which will allow you to interchange a rifled barrel for hunting with sabot slugs (better accuracy over long distance than a rifled slug) and 18″ for “home defense” like the 590A1 (which is the civilian purpose for buying a 590A1). Look into the 930. I have both the 930 and 590A1. I “use” the 930 for Turkey and Skeet. I hope I never “use” the 590A1 that stands next to my bed with 6 rounds of 00 Buckshot in it.

Q: When does deer hunting season start and end?
WHen does deer hunting season start and end. Also is it illegal to shoot does and fawns, and just shoot bucks. Im doing a presentation on how it illegal to kill bambi’s mom.

A: It really depends on where you live as to when deer season starts. Here in Louisiana deer season is from Oct. 11 – Jan. 11 depending on what Parish you live in. Deer tags were published this year for this first time is a while. So you are allowed to kill only so many doe and so many buck. There is also a season for bow and arrow hunters as well.

Hope this helped you out.

And no it is not illegal to kill bambi’s mom.

Q: When does deer hunting with a gun start in wisconsin?
my dad and i are really exited to go hunting this season but we don’t know when the season starts. dad thinks it is in November and i think it is in october. When is the exact date for deer hunting season?

A: Your answer is waiting here….

Q: What is so interesting about deer hunting?
I don’t get what the big thrill of dressing up in camo, putting on bottled deer urine, climbing into a tree stand and shooting the deer with a high-powered rifle with a scope is all about. It’s not real hunting….any real man would hunt a deer with his bare hands and if he could kill it….then he’d be a real hunter. Rifles are for pussies.
Even using a knife or spear…that’d be better. At least you’d learn the actual “hunting” skill that would be required if you were ever in need. I mean, after all…if you get lost somewhere how many high powered rifles with 300 yard scopes will be laying around? Be men goddamnit….strangle the deer and then eat it’s bleeding heart.
Yikes, I always thought deer meat was really dry. I don’t mind the jerky though.
And yes I have shot a deer before, and I thought it was really lame. I was there with my cousin in our tree stand and it just walked right out and I shot it. It was far, but with the scope I hit it right in the neck. The meat tasted like crap and gutting and skinning it was far too much hassle. If I were to hunt for meat again, it’d be at the grocery store with the rest of the people that have common sense. But to you folks that think you’re preserving some “hunting tradition”…….good luck to you and your deer (that odds are you’ve been baiting and luring for months now). Maybe he’ll just fall over for you!

A: In that case – You should know all about rifles!

Excellent inexpensive meat.
Let me know which store you can get 100lbs of 98% lean steaks for around $25.

If it tasted bad – you didn’t fix it right.
It’s lack of fat makes it taste different.

Also – if you go for the biggest, oldest deer (with a big rack), you’re not going to get quite as good of the meat’s as you do with a smaller 1 or 2 year old one.

Q: What would be the best pump shotgun for deer hunting (using slugs) and home defense (using shot)?
I am looking for an affordable 12 gage pump shotgun for multiple uses; home defense and hunting deer and turkey. I want to use slugs for deer hunting but I know that slugs would not be a reasonable home defense ammunition. What should I look to purchase?

A: Take a look here…… Mossberg offers a 500 model 12 gauge pump that come with 2 barrels….. The long one is for hunting — When you get home put the short one on for home defense……

Mossberg makes excellent shotguns….. Don’t let the inexpensive price fool you. These are really nice shotguns……

Ammunition for home defense?…. Buckshot of course…. 8 or 9 pellet 2 3/4 inch is perfect…. Here is whats in my Mossberg shotgun……

Q: What factory load would you suggest for deer hunting with my 357 mag?
Looking to use my 357 mag for deer hunting this year. I’ve been told it’s a little on the light side for deer. I shoot pretty good out to 40 yards with the red dot scope so I’ll probably make that my limit. I have a 6 1/2″ revolver.

A: It’s not to under powered to 75yds in capable hands. I’ve killed a couple myself with the 38spl out to the 35,40yd marks using 125 +P and 158grn hollow points. In the mag the 158’s would be great with a good wallop. The advantage you also have is using the 38’s in the 357 since it’s interchangable. 38 in 357, but not 357 in 38 because of the pressure difference. Sounds like you have a good set up at moderate ranges. Good luck

Q: What is a good lever action gun and caliber for hunting deer and bear?
What is a good lever action gun and caliber for hunting deer and bear? Im looking for something cheap and something that will take out a bear but that i can also use for deer hunting and not damage the animal hide to much. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: Look at Marlin. They make the best lever actions around, in a variety of calibers.

The new .308 Marlin is made for a lever action, and is big enough for black bear.

I like the .45-70 – it’s big enough for any bear walking.

And the old, reliable .30-30 is a great choice, too.

Q: What I wanna know is; Whats the difference between people hunting deer out there and Michael Vick’s dog fights
Why is it okay to hunt the poor innocent deer and other animals and eat them for dinner but there is such a big deal about this dog fighting. Why is deer hunting looked at as a sport but dog fighting is a crime punishable with prison time? Is it possible that because the majority of hunters are caucasion and the people who have dog fights are minorities. They have trophies for animal hunters and some people even hand the deer heads in their living rooms. I think both are wrong and if Michael Vick has to do jail time for gog fighting, hunters should also do jail time because both are cruelty to animals.

A: Hunters are not torturing the deer, they just kill them quick and easy. They put the head up because you dont eat the head and it looks cool to some people. Vick is an idiot for letting the fights happen on his property, weather he is black or white. If it was Brady, he would be getting ready to jail time too.

Q: Are there deer hunting locations near Las Vegas?
My husband is a deer hunter and we are planning on moving to Vegas. Are there hunting areas around there?

A: Absolutely!!! There are hunting units all over the place by and near Las Vegas. Depending on how far you are willing to go, some of, if not THE best hunting in the entire state is relatively close to Vegas. The Nevada Dept. of Wildlife has a complete list of hunting areas and they even give tips on every specific area in the state. I used to live in Vegas and the biggest deer I have ever seen, I saw just outside Vegas while hiking. I now live up in northern Nevada. Anyway here are some great links for you.

Q: What’s the difference between killing dogs and deer hunting?
We all have heard about Micheal Vick, and pleaing guilty to dogfighting charges. My question is if killing dogs is inhumane then why are laws not the same for deer hunting? I have seen in houses people hanging the heads of deers that they have killed. Is that not inhumane, or is killing deers perfectly fine, but killing dogs is inhumane and illegal?

A: Because deer tastes good and I grew up eating it. Dogs, I don’t know. Dogs aren’t jumping in front of my car in the morning . Everyone is against hunting. Well do you all eat steak, fish, chicken? Let me guess all of you who said hunting is wrong are pure vegetarian? Right. How do you think that hamburger you’ve eaten got on that bun. Someone killed an animal to provide it for you. As man takes up their habitat I guess you buncha wussy’s think its better to allow them to starve and freeze to death. Oh yeah they can always get hit by cars and die a slow agonizing death if they aren’t lucky enough to get hit by a truck. Next time you go to the grocery store think about that meat your buying. I’ll bet the Great Plastic Wrap Fairy had nothing to do with it.

Q: What rifle should i get for deer hunting?
I have only went deer hunting last season for 2 weeks and used a yacht 36 i believe to bag my first deer. I am expierenced in shooting since i have ben in the military for 5 years. what rifle do you recomend?

A: Wow Bizzoid, this is actually a tough question.

When you say deer rifle do you mean rifle brand or caliber.
There are many calibers that will take down a deer.
.243win, .270win, .308 and .30-06 are my personal favorites.
I know there are many more that people have used and love.

If you’re new to shooting rifles then the .243 is great because it doesn’t have terrible recoil. I personally don’t feel that a magnum round is necessary for deer.

If you’re asking what rifle to use, the answer is just as long. There are many good rifles to be had. The venerable Remington 700 BDL or CDL is still considered a great rifle. (it’s the best selling rifle of all time) If you’re willing to spend a little more money, the Browning A-bolt II is a fabulous rifle. Savage makes some very inexpensive rifles that are great starter rifles.

I have a Tikka T3 lite Stainless/Synthetic in .270win that is my personal favorite on most deer hunts. I really love this rifle and it isn’t an expensive gun. I shoot it very well.

There are so many good rifles out there.
Use what you like, feel confident with, and can shoot well. Be careful of your shot placement (more important than the rifle, caliber, or scope you’re using) and you’ll have venison on the table.

Q: How can I get my wife to tolerate my deer hunting?
She knew I was an avid hunter before we got married, and she has knowingly eaten and even cooked deer meat. For some reason, now, my hunting is a problem. I’ve tried all the logical arguments, but she still gets upset when I go hunting…Help!

A: Point out that hunting is actually more humane in a lot of ways. Cattle are bred just for food…they are shot up with hormones and antibiotics, castrated, branded, and then led to an “assembly line” style slaughter where they probably see what happens to the cow in front of them. Even worse with chickens, they mostly grow up crammed into pens.

When you go hunting, the deer lives its happy free deer life going where it wants, doing what it wants, and eating what it wants…until it’s shot, and if you’re a good shot he doesn’t even see it coming. To me that sounds a lot more humane. Personally I’d rather be blindsided by a hunter than killed in an assembly line at a slaughterhouse. Bring THAT up the next time she eats beef or chicken.
