Q: What Are Some Whitetail Deer Hunting Techniques?
I am 17 years old, new hunter, and I’m going to New York to hunt with a 12 Guage shotgun and deer slugs. I am going to be in a heavily wooded area with some fields every now and then, and It will be cold and snowing. What are some good techniques I should know for hunting Whitetail in Up-State New York?
A: I will be out also, if you are hunting in Upstate NY you better be using a Remington 12 gauge!! If you are hunting southern zone it will be wet and mild, at least until Monday. Every year I sit in a tree and just wait if your quiet usually you will see something, one year I shot a deer after being in a tree for 15 min. other years it has been 3 hours and some years 7 hours, the key is to have patients, force yourself to wait another 15 minutes when you want to move, than another 15 min. I can’t tell you how many times I have forced myself to stay in one spot when i didn’t want to and ended up shooting a deer a short time later. Good luck.
Q: What is the best broadhead for the money for Whitetail Deer Hunting? (Compound Bow)?
I am new to bow hunting and need some advice. What is the best bang for the buck broadhead to put on my arrows for whitetail deer hunting? Please advise.
A: I agree, Muzzy makes an excellent 3 blade 100 grain broadhead that’s well built and shoots straight.
I can get a six pack of these for around $35
Every year I use last years blades for practicing on a broadhead target then I buy a set of brand new replacement blades for $10 and put them on the night before season starts.
Q: What are some of the best Whitetail deer hunting outfitters in America and Canada?
I’m looking for some excellent outfitters for whitetail deer, I’d just like some opinions. I have some in mind but I’d also like to see other peoples thoughts and opinions, Thanks.
A: BassPro, Dick’s, Sports Authority, sometimes Walmart. Often the best ones are local shops, but it also depends on if you are looking for low price or high quality.

Q: When are the rut, pre rut, post rut, and other seasons for whitetail deer hunting in Southern Michigan?
Hunting with a firearm in michigan starts soon and i was curious when these specific seasons were…i have a pretty good idea but i want 2 know like the months and days and that type of information about hunting.
A: That’s a very hard question to answer because rut follows weather patterns and it changes every year. Rut usually takes place during the middle two weeks of November, but because of our warm fall, I would be willing to bet that it wont start until late nov, early dec. Predicting dates on rut is impossible.
Q: Hunting whitetail deer with a 9mm MP5 carbine, will it work?
My friend Theodore who knows little about guns just purchased a MP5 clone carbine in 9mm. He says that he will go deer hunting with it and shoot hollow points at them. Will it kill whitetail deer? I told him that it is not a wise choice.
Here is a picture of what it looks like, they are made by Vulcan Arms.

A: 9MM doesn’t have enough down range energy to successfully take deer…..
Look at this 9MM ballistics chart…..
http://www.shootingtimes.com/ballistics/9mm_luger_9×19mm.html
As you can see the 9MM has only 275 to 350 foot pounds of energy at 50 yards….
It is generally accepted that you need a cartridge that has 1000 foot pounds of energy minimum to ethically take deer…..
The 9MM most likely will injure the animal where it will run off and die a slow pain-full death…. This isn’t cool… It should be 1 well placed shot and the deer drops quickly….. A 30/30, 270 or larger rifle caliber should be used…..
Q: During the whitetail deer hunting season in lower michigan what dates are the prime time for the rut?
A: The rut occurs at the same time nationwide.
There is no correlation between weather and rut. Nor is there one with regard to the moon.
Here are the proven facts. Bucks begin to rut and want to mate when Does begin their estrus cycle.
A doe begins her cycle, and starts putting out pheromones when the days get shorter. A less and less light passes through a Doe’s eyes, it sends them into their cycle.
I recall a test from a university many years ago where 3 species of deer, White tail, Black tail, and Mule Deer, were placed in an indoor environment. As the testers controlled how much daylight entered the building, the deer were fooled by getting short days in July. This sent the Doe’s into their cycle, and the bucks began to rut.
Also the tests showed how in November, artificial light sustained long days, and there was no rut in October and November.
This is fact. The shorter days of Autumn bring on the Rut, and it is the same time everywhere in the continental US. The Rut begins around the 2nd week of November, and runs until the 1st week in December. Its Peak is around the 3rd and 4th week in November.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting.
Q: Reloaders: Which 223 bullet for hunting whitetail deer?
I intend to hunt whitetails this season with my AR-15. What type of bullet is best and what is the heaviest bullet that I can load to magazine length without sacrificing powder capacity?
My state allows 223’s for deer and I am not looking for suggestions for other calibers, I am simply trying to load the best and most humane 223 that I can shoot from a semi-auto.
A: My favorite is the 60 grain soft point that Nosler discontinued over 10 years ago. It mushrooms like a good 30 caliber and has good weight retention.I only have about 400 left and then I’ll be sad. Try the Sierra 69 grain Match King. It breaks apart when it hits, but the back half of the bullet stays together, usually with the jacket folding around the lead core so it penetrates well, but sometimes doesn’t go as straight as I’d like after entering a deer. I’m planning to try the Sierra 65 grain Game King bullet. It looks good and Sierra doesn’t make bad bullets. Since you are using a semi-automatic be careful if you use a lead nose bullet. Sometimes lead scrapes off as the bullets feed into the chamber. This usually isn’t bad, and to test for it fire a couple rounds, drop the clip, and take the loaded round out of the chamber and look at the point. Hollow points like the Sierra Match King and polymer tipped bullets feed better. You also have to know the twist rate of your rifle’s barrel. To use heavy bullets you must have a twist rate of one turn in 7 or 8 inches to stabilize the heavy bullets. Some bullets that stabilize in my Ruger Mini- 14 with a 1 in 7 twist will not stabilize in my Ruger 77 with a 1 in 12 twist. Although I haven’t used it yet, I’m sure the Sierra 65 grain Game King will stabilize in the slow twist barrels. First try the Sierra 69 grain. It should do well.
Q: What is the best rifle for whitetail deer hunting?
A: Where do you hunt most of your Whitetail, for medium to short range (in this order), 308, 7mm-08, 243, and medium to long range, 25-06, 270 and 7mm. Of course there are many others to chose from or add to this list like the 30-30 & 30-06 but every one under the sun owns one, but me. All of them are very effective and will work well with good shot placement.
Q: I am going to be hunting whitetail deer this year, with a shotgun, what is the best choke to use.?
I am going to be hunting white tail deer this season, with a shotgun for the first time. My barrel is a smooth bore barrel, so I am wondering what kind of choke I should use, if I want to use, slugs, buckshot or sabot rounds. If anyone has any info it would be appreciated.
The current choke in my barrel is a Remington Mod Choke.
A: The choke you have is fine. Use rifled slugs. Sabots need a rifled barrel and buckshot is not as lethal at greater distances.
Rifled slugs are lethal out to 100 yards easily.
Q: What is the best round for a 300 mag hunting whitetail deer?
I am typically shooting from 200 to 400 yards, through a wide open bottom. I am using a Model 70 Winchester with 4-12X50 Nikon Buckmasters scope. (Just to give you and idea of my setup) Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks
A: 150g. Win. soft-point
Q: is whitetail Deer hunting is essential for the deer population?
There are so many deer taken every year.. dating back for a long time.. there are people who say deer hunting should be illegal.. if it was stopped the deer popultion would be out of control right?
A: Previously, the deer population was kept in check by predators, mainly wolves. When the wolf population was decimated by expansion of farming communities, the deer population began unchecked growth.
Now, these deer face inadequate food supplies, which leads to wasting sickness.
The idea behind the hunt is to provide a check to this population growth. In a state with a proactive DNR, the size of the herd(s) is well known, and the resulting number of licenses granted is representative of the amount of deer in excess of the optimum population.
Q: What .357 magnum factory loads would be most efficient for hunting Whitetail deer?
I’ll be using a Dan Wesson .357 magnum revolver with an 8″ barrel at distances up to 50 yards.
A: Both the 158 and 180 grain hollow points are good choices. A cast 158-180 grain has also taken a lot of whitetail over the years. All will do the job and have done the job in the past.
Q: What is the perfect rifle for hunting whitetail deer with a recoil less than a 12 ga. shotgun?
No stupid answers please. Im a hunter with a year of experience. I am 14 years old. I am 5′9″ and 190 pounds. I am currently using my dad’s marlin .44 rem. mag. model 1894S. It works great but I am lookin for a rifle of my own. Any suggestions?
A: Holy cow. You are 5′9″ and 190 pounds! You’re a giant! When I was 14 I was on the wrestling team and wrestled in the 95 pound weight class.
Since you are big big young man, you will probably grow into a big adult man. Why not get a rifle that will suit your needs when you are 20 years old and beyond? Look into something with some real power that you can use for many years to come; 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 300 Wby Mag..
Here’s the deal with rifle shooting those magnum calibers. You usually only shoot them at the rifle range one or two shots at the target to make sure they are sighted-in. And, when you are hunting, they are usually one shot kills…with your adrenaline running from the excitement. You won’t even feel the recoil when you shoot at a deer!
Compare this to trap or skeet shooting with a 12 gauge shotgun, where in a competitive event, a shooter will shoot at 100 targets.
Ok, so which is going to be more punshing on your shoulder? 100 shots with a 12 gauge shooting 1 1/8 oz. target loads? Or, 2 shots from a 7mm Rem Mag from sandbags?
